The story behind our derby day mascot

Sunday 06 April 2025 15:31

Manchester United and the Premier League are set to welcome an important young fan as a mascot for our meeting with Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Seven-year-old Bobby Moore is a football-obsessed Red and has recently had the chance to meet his United hero, Bruno Fernandes.

Bobby was born with a rare genetic condition known as spinal muscular atrophy, which requires him to use a powerchair and, such is his passion for his club, it just had to be a bright red one.

That passion shone through when the young United fan’s celebration went viral earlier in the season with his ecstatic reaction to our captain knocking home one of his signature penalties.

United fan Bobby Moore has had an incredible week with the club he adores.

The feelgood clip caught the attention of Fernandes, who received a letter from Bobby as part of the Premier League’s Fan Mail series to learn more about the supporter’s love for all things United.

Invited down to our Carrington training base to take part in a powerchair football session, Bobby’s day got even better when he was surprised on the pitch by none other than his idol, Fernandes.

The captain took the young Red for lunch and a tour of Carrington, during which, he met some of the other United stars who will take to the pitch today (Sunday).

To top it all off, Fernandes repaid Bobby for his endless support by offering him the chance to be our mascot for the home derby – the reverse of the fixture which provoked the initial viral reaction.

After a special matchday experience, Bobby will take his spot in the Theatre of Dreams as we look to do pick up another league win against our crosstown rivals.

Thanks for joining us, Bobby. We hope you enjoy your day!

Who has Amorim picked for derby day?

Ruben Amorim has selected the Manchester United side for his first home derby with local rivals City.

Our head coach knows victory in the 16:30 BST kick-off would secure a Premier League double over the Blues, following the 2-1 comeback win at the Etihad Stadium at the end of last year.

United have a crucial Europa League date with Lyon on Thursday, with the quarter-final tie gaining so much importance to the season, but the local affair at Old Trafford this afternoon is sure to be another huge occasion.

Shaw arrives at Old Trafford Video

The England defender is among the substitutes, and is joined on the bench by Joshua Zirkzee, with Rasmus Hojlund recalled to the starting XI.

Matthijs de Ligt, flagged as a doubt after picking up an “issue” in the defeat at Nottingham Forest, is absent, as Harry Maguire takes his spot at centre-half, after coming on at The City Ground.

There is a youthful element to a section of the bench with Harry Amass, Godwill Kukonki and Chido Obi all included, but Ayden Heaven is not rushed back.

THE TEAMS

Man Utd: Amorim hits out at Garnacho among trio who lack ‘quality’; wants two ‘big players’ in summer

Ruben Amorim named Alejandro Garnacho as one of three Manchester United players who lack “quality” ahead of a summer in which he wants to bring in “two big players”.

Amorim arrived as United’s new head coach in November but has struggled to make the desired impact following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, with the Red Devils sitting 13th in the Premier League table ahead of their clash with Manchester City on Sunday.

It’s widely accepted that the Portuguese boss needs new recruits this summer as the current crop struggle to adapt to his philosophy and system.

And Amorim confirmed ahead of the Manchester derby that he wants to bring in a couple of “big players”.

“We need to be really good in recruitment,” said Amorim. “We need to know our system, the way we play, and the players have to be perfect for that position. We know what to do, we will see next season.

“I just want to focus on our strengths and bring one or two players, big players.

“We need to focus, we are doing all the stuff to be next season so much better. In my idea, I cannot manage this thing of ‘in four years we will try something’. We need to be so much better. This is a massive club

“It’s characteristics that we don’t have in our squad, trying to see the gaps, when I say big players I’m not saying from Real Madrid etcetera, it’s big players in the way I see the game.”

Garnacho has been heavily linked with an exit since Amorim joined the club having been one of the players to have struggled most to cope with his change of role in the side, with the new boss asking him to play as an inverted forward.

And Amorim admits “something is missing” in the Argentinian’s game right now, claiming he and his fellow forwards “are not doing things with the quality they should do”.

“I think they need to spend more time in that position because we didn’t have a lot of games like Nottingham, like just attacking. We have to spend more time there,” Amorim said.

“And also in that moment, if you look at Rasmus (Hojlund) and Josh (Zirkzee) and Garna (Alejandro Garnacho) they want this, they try to shoot – especially Garna.

“They want it really bad, but we are not doing the things with the quality that they should do. So sometimes it’s hard to explain because we have the situations, everybody knows where Garna wants to put the ball, but something is missing and maybe it’s just the moment of the players.”

Amorim has though been impressed by the impact of Ayden Heaven, who joined the club from Arsenal for £1.5m in January.

“We have to give credit to Jason [Wilcox – Man Utd technical director]. Jason did a great job. He’s paying attention to those details,” Amorim added.

“Ayden is a kid that arrives here, worked really well and then with some injuries, he had the opportunity and shows a lot of qualities. So that can also change your recruitment.

“So if we we’re thinking ‘Licha [Lisandro Martinez] has an injury, we need a left-footed centre-back’, but now we have this kid, so we can save money for another thing. So that is really important and the door is open for young kids.”

Picture: Forgotten United star makes shock return to Amorim’s squad for the Manchester derby – report

Manchester United are gearing up for the all-important Manchester derby on Sunday against their noisy neighbours Manchester City and Ruben Amorim will be delighted with the surprise return of one particular star.

The Portuguese head coach had explained that Kobbie Mainoo had a chance of making the matchday squad and the Carrington graduate was seen arriving at Old Trafford.

But in a shock twist, Luke Shaw was also spotted arriving at the Theatre of Dreams with his boot bag, which indicates he will be part of the squad.

Shaw back

— Manchester United (@MUnitedFR) April 6, 2025

The England international has missed four months of action since the ex-Sporting CP boss’ arrival and his return could be a huge boost given Lisandro Martinez and Ayden Heaven’s absence.

The 20-time English league champions do not have a left-footed centre-back option and Shaw has excelled in a three-man system in the past.

Shaw, who has managed a 98 minutes of action this season and played three times under the Portuguese head coach, was supposed to be back in no time.

But as has often been the case with the 29-year-old, he ended up suffering a setback and United have had to be extra careful with his rehabilitation.

No De Ligt

As indicated by Amorim in the presser, Matthijs de Ligt was not seen arriving at Old Trafford while there was no Chido Obi as well. The Dane had missed the Nottingham Forest game due to his involvement in the FA Youth Cup.

In De Ligt’s absence, Godwill Kukonki made the cut with the 17-year-old impressing Amorim and he is also set to earn a new contract for his displays for the Academy. Fellow Carrington graduate Harry Amass has also been included.

As revealed by The Manchester Evening News, Harry Maguire, Manuel Ugarte, Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee are all part of the squad with a total of 20 players accounted for.

Confirmed arrivals: Goalkeepers: Andre Onana, Tom Heaton, Altay Bayindir.

Defenders: Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Victor Lindelof, Godwill Kukonki, Luke Shaw, Patrick Dorgu, Harry Amass.

Midfielders: Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte, Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes.

Attackers: Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee, Alejandro Garnacho.

Real Madrid once again concede defeat to United in the race for “exceptional” Frenchman, Amorim will be delighted – report

Given Ruben Amorim’s midfield problems, Bruno Fernandes has been forced to play as a deep-lying playmaker which has meant a lack of creativity in forward areas.

Alejandro Garnacho’s form has dropped at the worst possible time while Christian Eriksen no longer has the legs to operate in the head coach’s system which is why a departure is on the cards in the summer.

Kobbie Mainoo is currently injured and he does not have a fixed role nor the fitness levels to play in that position while his future also remains up in the air.

Amad was excelling in that role before his injury and he might be dropped to the wingback position as per reports. Given the duo of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte do not have the nous of the Manchester United skipper, Amorim has had no choice but to play Fernandes deeper.

United need attacking midfielder

While he has still produced superb numbers, Amorim might try and recruit an equally effective attacking midfielder in the summer and United will come face-to-face with the perfect player in the Europa League quarter-final — Rayan Cherki of Olympique Lyon.

The Frenchman has a nine goals from 27 starts across all competitions, and an incredible 18 assists. And he is only 21, the perfect age for INEOS. He can play not only as an attacking midfielder but also out on the wings and even up front if needed.

Cherki’s creativity is unmatched with the Lyon ace currently falling in the 99th percentile for progressive passes, assists and shot-creating actions, while figuring in the 96th percentile for successful take-ons (via fbref).

His contract is up in 2026 and the France U21 international has a release clause of just €30 million, which will suit the Red Devils due to their financial situation.

The Olympic silver-medallist’s form has naturally attracted a lot of attention with Real Madrid also eyeing him while Tottenham Hotspur are also interested.

But as per Real Madrid Confidencial, Los Blancos have admitted defeat just like last summer when they lost out on Leny Yoro to the 20-time English league champions.

Real admit defeat

“With an offer of €30 million, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are seeking the signing of Rayan Cherki. The Olympique Lyonnais player is one of the greatest talents currently in French football. Shining both in attack and midfield, Real Madrid also considered his transfer.

“Furthermore, with his contract expiring in 2026, his departure from Lyon was practically a given for the following summer transfer window. While Real Madrid saw potential in signing Cherki, their plans have once again been thwarted by the Premier League. Avoiding a bidding war for Cherki, the Frenchman’s future now points to a move to English football.

“Just like what happened with Leny Yoro during the last summer transfer window, Real Madrid is close to parting ways with another French talent. Although Real Madrid could choose to fight for this signing, this would lead to a battle that might not end well.”

Surely INEOS can use their French connections to stave off competition for the “exceptional” Cherki, especially if he impresses against Amorim’s side in the coming weeks.

Man Utd: Keane rubbishes Amorim claim ahead of Man City clash – ‘What the hell does that mean?’

Roy Keane disagreed with Ruben Amorim over the Manchester United head coach’s assertion that his side has shown ‘progress in recent performances’ ahead of their clash with Manchester City on Sunday.

United lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest last time out in the Premier League but were unbeaten in their previous four league games, with draws against Everton and Arsenal as well as victories over Ipswich and Leicester.

They also saw their way past Real Sociedad during that run to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Europa League in what has undoubtedly been Amorim’s best spell at Old Trafford since arriving in November.

But few would disagree with it being a disappointing tenure in general, with United sitting 13th in the Premier League table having lost 13 and won just ten of their 30 top flight games so far this season.

Amorim was positive in his programme notes though, claiming ‘it is clear to see we are making progress in our performances’ and Keane was asked whether he agrees with Manchester United boss on Sky Sports ahead of the Manchester derby.

“Not from what we’re seeing,” Keane said. “We don’t know whether he’s seeing something on the training ground – a bit more spirit and a bit more fight.

“But I’ve not seen it in the few games I’ve watched recently. After the Forest game they got a few plaudits for their possession and being neat and tidy, but when people say they’re neat and tidy, what the hell does that mean?

“It’s really important to score goals in football. Obviously the attacking players aren’t doing the business and that’s where they’ve been really lacking. I think even Wolves have scored more goals than them. So that’s a huge problem.

“They’re not dynamic, they’re not mobile. They showed a little bit of spirit a couple of weeks ago at home to Arsenal but the standard of the game wasn’t great and there was no edge to it.

“So I don’t see where the manager is coming from. I’ve not seen much progress. And the fact is they don’t dig in, they lose too many matches – 13 already this season, 14 last year – so even when they’re not at their best they don’t dig in, they don’t roll their sleeves up, I don’t like the spine of the team.”

This United side have a reputation of raising their levels for big games though and beat City at the Etihad through two late Amad Diallo goals in December having got the better of them in the FA Cup final at the end of last season.

And Keane admits that despite his reservations over the so-called progress of the Red Devils he believes “they’ll get a result today and find some sort of spark”.

United plotting surprise move for ex-Newcastle star, he will be available on free transfer – report

Manchester United are reportedly interested in Preston North End goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

Much has been written about Andre Onana’s erratic performances for the Red Devils, with many raising question marks over his ability to remain United’s number-one choice in goal next season.

However, his cover, Altay Bayindir has done little to challenge him for the starting spot, managing just six appearances across all competitions this term. The Turkey international could return to Süper Lig in the summer.

Meanwhile, third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton’s contract at United is due to expire in June.

Amid this, Ruben Amorim has started search for a new goalkeeper and is understood to be keen on adding a homegrown talent to his ranks.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, United have set their sights on Woodman as a summer transfer target.

The former England U20 international has been sidelined for the remainder of the season with an ankle injury sustained over the international break.

However, prior to his injury, United followed the 28-year-old, who had been enjoying a brilliant campaign under Paul Heckingbottom in the Championship. He kept 13 clean sheets in 37 league appearances.

His performances have seemingly impressed the hierarchy at Old Trafford, putting him in the frame for a move to United.

The North End star has previously played in the Premier League with Newcastle United, who sold him in 2022 after a number of underwhelming loan stints away from St James’ Park.

Woodman signed a three-year deal at Deepdale and his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, making him an appealing target.

United are also monitoring Blackburn Rovers shot-stopper Aynsley Pears ahead of the summer transfer window.

Former Reds share their derby memories

Sunday 06 April 2025 09:54

The 196th Manchester derby is fast approaching and at 16:30 BST on Sunday, our city will collide at Old Trafford.

A fierce rivalry, hundreds of Reds past and present have experienced the buzz and intensity of this great fixture.

Ahead of Sunday’s match, we contacted many former United players on Instagram to ask for their favourite memories about the matches they played against Man City.

From Argentina – where Marcos Rojo and Ander Herrera play for Boca Juniors – to Saudi Arabia – where Chris Smalling is currently based – we spoke to a host of Reds who played pivotal roles in historic matches against our local rivals…

Marcos Rojo

Rojo plays for Boca Juniors now but took part in many a Manchester derby during his time in M16. The former United defender reflected on his memories of this match:

“I have many fantastic memories of that game but my favourite was the following game attached, we won and it was my birthday!!”

The match Marcos was referring to was our 1-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium on 20 March 2016, where a certain Marcus Rashford scored the winner.

Ander Herrera

Also at Boca Juniors, Ander recalled three key wins over City that are memorable for him:

“I would say 4-2 at home in my first season at the club and also 3-2 away when we came back from 2-1 down in the first half. Also when we beat them 1-0 at home in the Carabao Cup and we ended up winning the competition.”

Scott McTominay

Scott played in a lot of derbies during his time at United, both in our academy and first team. He scored in our 2020 triumph at Old Trafford and this game is the one that stands out to the Napoli midfielder most:

“My favourite memory has to be the goal in 2020, I still get goosebumps about the crowd and the atmosphere after the game! The derby is a special match and I wish you all the best, a big win.”

Juan Mata

Juan had a similar message of encouragement for Sunday’s fixture:

“It has to be the goal I scored vs them in our victory at Old Trafford in 2015. But Wayne’s bicycle goal was probably the all-time most iconic goal in a derby. Derby means pride, history, passion, legacy. Let’s win the derby!!”

Ruben: It’s about us, not Haaland Video

AMORIM Q&A | The boss answers questions on Amad, Mazraoui and an absent Manchester City player…

Chris Smalling

Scorer of our winner in the 3-2 comeback success in 2018, it’s safe to say Chris has some fond memories of the Manchester derby:

“Hmm, too many memories! Personally my very first derby (Rooney overhead kick) is hard to beat. Although goals in the Community Shield and then the 3-2 comeback are some of the best memories too. Even though I am not Mancunian I was made aware of the rivalry from the very first day. From players, staff, fans, I knew how much it meant to everyone on derby day. To have played a part in some epic memories is an honour and these matches will stay with me forever!”

Javier Hernandez

Chicharito also referred to that iconic Rooney goal when recalling his favourite derby moment:

“That derby meant to me so much always. You want to prove you’re the best team in the city! My favourite moment is the game where we beat them in Old Trafford and Wazza scored that bicycle kick goal from Nani’s cross.”

Why Ruben is relaxed about our transfer plans

Sunday 06 April 2025 07:55

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim explored the subject of summer transfers, during the second part of his press conference to preview Sunday’s Manchester derby.

The boss was asked several questions about our plans for the upcoming window and, as you can read in the Q&A below, he is confident about his preparatory work with technical director Jason Wilcox to identify players for his philosophy. Delve into the details here…

Hi Ruben, at Sporting, you and Hugo Viana combined to win titles without always having the biggest budget compared to Benfica and Porto… how do you win a league without the biggest budget? And does it show that Hugo was exceptional at his job at Sporting? Do you need Jason [Wilcox] to be exceptional at his job here if this club is to win the league, when it can’t spend the money that Manchester City can?
“It’s a different context, a different league. Of course, we were in a similar position, maybe lower. But this is different. Here the competition is completely different. Of course, we need to have a great connection. I was so lucky to work with Hugo, but I find it is more or less the same relation with Jason, so in that department I’m completely relaxed. We need to be really good in recruitment, we need to know our system and the way we play. The players have to be perfect for that position, so we know what to do, that is clear, we will see next season.”

Part two: Press conference v Man City Video

Part two: Press conference v Man City

Press conference part two | Amorim is asked for his ‘secret’ to beating Guardiola and about us signing ‘big players’…

Ruben, you’ve come up against Guardiola twice this season and beat him both times. What has been the secret to those wins?
“Lucky. First game was so lucky, the first half could be 0-4 and we won 4-1. The second game, I prefer the second game, we won in the last second. I think they controlled more of the possession, but we were there fighting with Manchester City. So, if I have to tell you one thing, maybe luck.”

Do you need more than luck to beat them a third time?
“Of course, because the odds drop. But we are prepared for the game. We are improving in some aspects of our game, sometimes the results are not there but we are improving and I can see that. So, let’s continue with that idea. We know it’s going to be a different game from Nottingham, so we have to adapt the way we play, and we are working on that to be prepared for Sunday.”

It’s funny you talk about good luck there because when I think of Amad scoring against City, he’s been injured, I’m thinking you’ve had a lot of bad luck this season with injuries and managers don’t like to say that because it looks like an excuse. Are you quite excited that it looks like, next season, if you don’t have all these injuries, the progress could be quite quick because you’ve been without a lot of players this season?
“I’m really excited for next season and I’m already really stressed for next season because I put a lot of pressure on us. We’ve had a lot of bad luck with injuries but you can look at the Premier League, everybody had some injuries, so I don’t like to focus on that. Then, sometimes when you have an injury, you find something that is going to be important in the future. I found out Garna [Alejandro Garnacho] can play on the right, Ayden [Heaven] is ready to stay in our squad and maybe we can change the way we go into the market. So, there are good things in the bad things, let’s focus on that.”

When do you think Amad will be able to play for you?
“I think he will be ready in the final games, I don’t know for sure [which game], but he will be ready. We will see.”

Part one: Press conference v Man City Video

Part one: Press conference v Man City

Press conference part one | Ruben provides the latest news on injuries and our squad, before Sunday’s Manchester derby…

You said [in the first part of the press conference] that you wanted one or two big players and big players for you are different to maybe what other people…
“I shouldn’t say that but big players is like different things…”

But you also said about the system, is it just the perfect players for you, your system, and that’s very different to what everyone else wants?
“It’s characteristics that we don’t have in our squad. Trying to see the gaps we have in our squad and when I say big players, it’s not players from Real Madrid and etcetera. It’s big players in the way I see the game.”

And not big money?
“That helps a lot.”

Get ready for the derby:

Man Utd: De Gea, McTominay returns among five possible reunions for INEOS to sanction after exit ‘mistake’ admission

Amid reports that Manchester United are ‘considering’ a summer re-signing, we’ve identified five ex-Red Devils for INEOS to target in the next window.

David De Gea
De Gea is the former Red Devil who is reportedly lined up for a shock Old Trafford return, with the Premier League giants admitting his exit was a ‘mistake’.

Man Utd opted against extending De Gea’s contract in 2023 as former boss Erik ten Hag preferred a ball-playing goalkeeper and reunited with Andre Onana after they worked together at Ajax.

De Gea was thrust into the deep end at Man Utd before he was physically or mentally ready, but he grew into the No.1 role and became the world’s best goalkeeper before declining en route to leaving.

Onana, meanwhile, joined Man Utd as a more experienced goalkeeper and had an impressive debut season, albeit via a couple of disasters in the Champions League.

But Onana’s form has fallen off a cliff this season and Ruben Amorim reportedly cannot wait to get rid. A younger model will likely be preferred to De Gea, but the 34-year-old – with ten clean sheets in 27 Serie A games – is enjoying a swansong at Fiorentina and would not be a bad short-term solution and a cheap stop-gap with INEOS looking to save wherever they can.

READ: Man City FFP, Liverpool bottle it, Ange sack, Man Utd glory: Five ways to save this season

Alvaro Carreras
As worrying as Onana’s decline is, Man Utd’s summer transfer priorities will lie elsewhere. A new striker likely leads the way with Amorim’s current crop being relegation-calibre, but they still need to sign one or two wing-backs capable of playing in the head coach’s preferred system.

£25m January signing Patrick Dorgu has proven to be useful with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia stuck in the treatment room, while Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui do not possess the necessary attacking capabilities to deliver on what Amorim demands from his wing-backs in the final third.

It is typical of United, with their endless stream of transfer calamities, that they offloaded Carreras, a wing-back with eight goal involvements in 2024/25 and perfect for Amorim’s formation, only a few months before the head coach replaced Ten Hag.

The 22-year-old has attracted admiring glances from Barcelona this season, but Man Utd’s buy-back clause – worth around £16m – allows them to spare their blushes with a low-cost return transfer, which should be a no-brainer.

Angel Gomes
As alluded to above, Man Utd will be working on a shoestring budget (unless these six stars bring in £231m combined) this summer and may even be forced to enter the free-agent market with several once-valuable assets due to leave their current clubs.

United won’t be able to sign Mohamed Salah or Virgil van Dijk, but they could give England international Gomes – who is “100%” leaving Lille – another opportunity to establish himself at his boyhood club.

The 24-year-old did not feature at all on our latest England ladder, as Thomas Tuchel was clearly not sold on Lee Carsley’s experiment, but the central midfielder more than held his own for The Three Lions after following in the footsteps of Jude Bellingham and co. in developing away from prying eyes in the Premier League.

Man Utd’s midfield could look very different next season with Casemiro possibly following Christian Eriksen in heading for an exit, and Gomes would bolster Amorim’s squad with his ability to operate as a playmaker from deep and in advanced positions.

READ: Rashford ‘could play for Manchester United again’ – if finger-pointing Ruben Amorim suddenly resigns

Scott McTominay
Napoli have benefitted from Man Utd’s “misprofiling” of McTominay
, who has been a revelation for the Serie A giants this season.

Man Utd have been poked and prodded by the Italian media, with the translation presumably reading: ‘What the f*** were United thinking when they sold McSauce?’.

Despite most of McTominay’s best moments for Man Utd coming in an attacking position, former coaches did not persist and foolishly used the £25m star as a No.6 or even at centre-back on occasion.

Former Chelsea and Spurs head coach Antonio Conte has exposed Man Utd’s mistake, with McTominay contributing seven goals and four assists in his debut season in a Frank Lampard-esque roaming role.

This transfer won’t happen, but Amorim could right the wrongs of previous management by using McTominay to regularly score and provide assists in one of two supporting positions behind whoever is brought in to replace Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

Anthony Elanga
Two of Man Utd’s many transfer mistakes were exposed by Elanga
, who easily brushed Alejandro Garnacho aside to score a stunning winner for Nottingham Forest against Man Utd in midweek.

The Red Devils cashed in on Elanga for a measly £15m as they felt forced to somewhat balance the books after spunking £86m on Antony, and his sensational form for Forest since proves his former club left a lot of much-needed cash on the table with this pure profit sale.

Man Utd must regret investing in Antony over Elanga after their embarrassing misjudgment and their toothless attack would certainly be less shoddy with the Forest standout still in the mix.

Elanga has been lethal on the counter-attack this season, and he also may not have reached his ceiling yet. He’d be daft to leave Champions League-bound Forest for Man Utd. Amorim is surely cursing Ten Hag for letting the red-hot winger slip away for peanuts after his big moment on Tuesday night.
