‘I could have done what he did!’ – 73-year-old O’Neill makes brutal claim about one Man Utd star

Former Premier League manager Martin O’Neill insists he could have performed at the same level as Man Utd defender Patrick Dorgu on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest – who are on course to qualify for the Champions Legaue – with Anthony Elanga scoring the only goal of the game.

Man Utd dominated many aspects of the game with Ruben Amorim’s side having 69 per cent possession and 23 shots compared to Forest’s eight.

But Red Devils academy graduate Elanga came back to haunt them with the Swede picking the ball up in his own half and running most of the length of the pitch, avoiding a couple of challenges, before sticking the ball into the bottom corner.

Amorim is struggling to get the right results since replacing Erik ten Hag in November and his new January signing Dorgu was off the pace on Tuesday evening.

Former Leicester City boss O’Neill, 73, called out the Denmark international for taking the easy option “three times” early in the second half.

O’Neill told TNT Sports: “They had Dorgu playing tonight.

“I could have done what he did! He’s wide left-hand side, he’s got the ball and you’re saying: “Come on! Your job is to take players on. Get at them!”

“He’s laid it inside three times in the first 10 minutes of the second half… to the opposition!

“Maybe it’s no confidence, I don’t know what it is. But these type of things are all over the field for Manchester United.”

On the quality difference between Man Utd and Nottingham Forest, O’Neill added: “They [Man United] have some really good players.

“Obviously, Bruno Fernandes is a top-quality player. But they haven’t enough good players to be a threat in this league. And when I say a threat for Manchester United, I’m talking about getting into the top four.”

Man Utd boss Amorim was disappointed not to get all three points after seeing his side “control” the game at the City Ground.

Amorim told reporters: “I think we controlled the game. We already knew that this team [Forest] can score goals out of nothing. Then when they scored, we changed the game a little bit for what they want.

“Then we tried sometimes with the good opportunities but I think in the last cross, the last pass, the last assist [it] wasn’t there. When we don’t have that we cannot score goals. But we have some situations and this season is like that. We try it. We have a lot of shots on goal. We push the opponent to the last third. But in the end we had a lack of quality in the final third.”

Man Utd plan ‘two blockbuster signings’ to ‘show the footballing world’ they mean business

Man Utd are looking to make ‘two blockbuster signings’ in the summer transfer window to help Ruben Amorim take the club back to the top, according to reports.

The Red Devils are having a nightmare season under Amorim with Man Utd currently 13th in the Premier League table heading into the final eight fixtures of the campaign.

Despite having more possession and almost three times the amount of shots as Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night, Man Utd lost 1-0 to an Anthony Elanga goal in the first half.

Amorim’s side have struggled to adapt to the Portuguese head coach’s style of play, philosophy and tactics, although recent displays have been slightly more encouraging.

The Man Utd board could only afford one January transfer amid financial difficulties with Patrick Dorgu arriving from Italian side Lecce.

However, it now looks like Amorim will get some proper backing in the summer transfer window with GiveMeSport claiming that Man Utd are ‘determined to prove they mean business this summer’.

The Red Devils have plotted ‘an ambitious transfer strategy designed to show Bruno Fernandes – and the rest of the footballing world – that they are ready to compete at the highest level’.

The report comes as Man Utd midfielder Fernandes has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, something which Amorim has already ruled out in a press conference.

Man Utd ‘will build around’ Fernandes with the hope that winning the Europa League and qualification for the Champions League can  ‘unlock the kind of spending power needed to attract top-tier talent’.

The report adds:

‘If they do qualify, expect a major push for a marquee striker like Victor Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, along with significant reinforcements in other key areas.

Right now, Manchester United have to tread carefully in terms of spending commitments but, behind the scenes, multiple scenarios are being mapped out. If they get the green light to accelerate their project, it could mean two blockbuster signings rather than just one.

‘Regardless of their financial constraints, insiders believe the Red Devils will aim to bring in five new signings this summer, carefully balancing the books to strengthen the squad.

‘A new midfield partner for Manuel Ugarte is on the wishlist, along with a creative attacker and a defensive reinforcement. Manchester United’s season is shaping up to be a crucial one as they push for the Champions League platform needed to truly flex their muscle.’

Furious Rio Ferdinand rips into three United stars, claims they were responsible for loss to Forest

Club legend Rio Ferdinand slammed Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, Alejandro Garnacho and Noussair Mazraoui for their respective roles in Anthony Elanga’s goal as Manchester United fell to a 1-0 defeat on Tuesday evening.

Elanga was allowed to run from the edge of his penalty area and break into United’s box before scoring with just five minutes on the clock.

That strike was all Forest needed to clinch all three points and bring Ruben Amorim and his players back down to reality after a run of positive results before the international break.

In his post-match press conference, Amorim insisted that the goal could have been avoided. He noted that Garnacho should have perhaps fouled Elanga and stopped the Swede in his tracks.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Ferdinand shared the same opinion as Amorim, but also questioned why Dorgu and Mazraoui didn’t do better in that situation.

The six-time Premier League winner said [via The Mirror], “I can break this goal down. I think there’s three moments where they could have maybe stopped this goal. I think, first of all, it’s a wonderful goal from Elanga, and you can’t take anything away from him in that sense.”

“But when you’re looking for a defensive point of view, Elanga on the edge of the box there. Dorgu’s got to be goal-side.”

“You’ve got to think defensively first. You know the threat is pace. Be in a better position to stop that. Then he’s behind, he’s chasing, can’t get back.”

Ferdinand continued, “And Garnacho has a role to play here. You should take him out, foul him there. You’ve got to foul him there. Take him out. You can see the pace; you can see the support he has.”

“And Mazraoui’s got to make a decision. Before he gets into that box, you’ve got to go and engage the attacking player there.”

“Go into the box, get closer to goal. Elanga dispatches.”

The result left United stuck in 13th place with eight Premier League games remaining. As things stand, a top-half finish appears to be a tough challenge for the Red Devils, with the Europa League being their best chance of salvaging the season.

Man Utd ‘reservations’ that led to Elanga sale revealed after academy graduate stuns Red Devils

The ‘reservations’ Manchester United had over Anthony Elanga ahead of his sale to Nottingham Forest have been revealed after the winger scored a stunning goal against his former club on Tuesday.

Elanga covered 85 metres of the City Ground pitch in just nine seconds, taking seven touches, the last of which was a perfectly directed shot into the corner to beat Andre Onana and hand Forest all three points in their bid to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Elanga now has six goals and eight assists in the Premier League this season and the wonderful winner against the Red Devils inevitably led to debates as to whether United were right to sell their academy graduate to Forest for just £15m in the summer of 2023.

The Athletic has revealed the ‘reservations’ United had when they decided to sell the now 22-year-old despite ‘appreciating’ his other qualities.

Like many things with United, the answer is complicated. When Elanga departed, there was an appreciation at the club for his phenomenal physical talents but reservations over how he would parlay those skills into breaking down stubborn defences. Elanga on the counter-attack running into open space can be devastating, but it was of less use in a United team that had expectations to dominate possession during games.

Dean Whitehouse, who was an academy coach for United between 2000 and 2023, criticised the club for letting Elanga go in a recent LinkedIn post.

Whitehouse wrote: “Nottingham Forest fans witnessed a thrilling display at the City Ground as Anthony Elanga dismantled a strong Brighton side, assisting in three goals and showcasing the electric pace and attacking intent that made him such an exciting prospect at Manchester United. Watching him tear down the flanks, fearless and relentless, it’s impossible not to wonder: Why is he doing this in Forest red and not at Old Trafford?

“Elanga’s story at United is one of rapid rise and equally swift departure. As a kid in the Carrington cages, he played with joy, dancing past opponents in tight spaces, honing the kind of skill that cannot be taught through rigid coaching structures. He was a footballer in the purest sense, bold, expressive, and unpredictable. When Ralf Rangnick handed him his first-team chance, he embraced it with both arms, injecting pace and energy into a struggling United side.

“The early signs were promising. He was fearless, direct and played with the enthusiasm of someone who knew the weight of the badge but was not burdened by it. He scored big goals, lifted fans off their feet, and looked like the next in a long line of great United wingers, [Steve] Coppell, [Andrei] Kanchelskis, [Ryan] Giggs, and [David] Beckham. But instead of being nurtured into a mainstay, he was deemed surplus to requirements. Sold for a relatively low fee, while United spent tens of millions searching for something they already had.”

United submit blockbuster €50m offer for Barcelona wonderkid termed “best in the world” in his position – report

Manchester United’s need for another wingback has been well-documented with neither Diogo Dalot nor Noussair Mazraoui capable of fulfilling Ruben Amorim’s attacking demands.

Both stars are traditional full-backs and the difference since Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu came in has been clear for all to see. Which is why the Portuguese had coach wants INEOS to bring in another piece of the jigsaw in the summer.

The January signing has excelled on the left but he can also play on the right and the Red Devils could opt for another left-sided wingback.

As per reports in Spain (via F365), Alejandro Balde remains a target for United and they have even presented an initial offer of €50 million to the Catalan giants.

Balde key for Barca

Hansi Flick is delighted with the Spaniard’s impact this season and has categorically instructed Deco to reject the offer and that is what the La Liga giants have done.

The 21-year-old, termed ” the best in the world” in his position, has one goal and eight assists this season and his ability with the ball makes him the perfect fit for Amorim’s system.

He is in the 98 percentile for successful take-ons and in the 97 percentile for progressive carries (via fbref), which is exactly why Flick does not want to lose him under any circumstance.

“Balde is back at 100% and is an indispensable part of the Barcelona lineup. Defensively, he still has some shortcomings, but he’s a lethal weapon every time he joins the attack, thanks to his speed and depth.

“This has caught the attention of Manchester United , who are looking for a new owner for the left wing, despite signing Patrick Dorgu in January, and have their eyes on the La Masia pearl.

United submit offer

“And they didn’t hesitate to present an initial offer valued at 50 million euros, which Camp Nou instantly rejected, considering it insufficient.

“Flick is delighted with Balde, who has scored one goal and provided eight assists this season, and has made it very clear that he doesn’t want to lose him under any circumstances. So he’s untouchable for Barça.”

Whether United mount a sustained challenge for his signature remains to be seen but given Balde’s love for his boyhood club and his importance to the coach’s system, it is likely that the Spain international will remain at Camp Nou.

The 20-time English league champions will likely have to move on to other options with Jeremie Frimpong and Roger Fernandes among the options being eyed for the right side after the Geovany Quenda deal went sideways.

“To be honest, probably …” Chelsea manager Maresca opens up on Jadon Sancho’s future at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has finally addressed the loan termination rumours surrounding Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho.

Sancho joined Chelsea on loan from United last summer in a deal that included a £25 million obligation to buy, contingent on the Blues finishing at least 14th in the Premier League this season.

Currently, Chelsea sit in fourth place, 15 points ahead of 15th-placed Everton, and it appears it’s only a matter of time before that condition is fulfilled.

However, due to Sancho’s poor performances over the past few months, there have been suggestions that Chelsea could back out of their obligation to sign the forward permanently. Last month, David Ornstein revealed that Maresca’s side will have to pay United £5m to cancel the arrangement.

Ahead of Chelsea’s meeting with Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday, Maresca spoke about Sancho’s future while admitting the England international needs to improve.

Maresca’s said that the 25-year-old’s situation has not changed despite the emergence of a clause that could see him remain a United player.

The Spanish coach told reporters [via Independent], “All the players that are with us, I love all of them. But in this moment, it is the moment to finish well. It is not the moment to think about next season.”

“I am completely focused on nine games, two months to go. I’m completely focused about that and then what happens in the summer, we’ll see. All the ones that are here, I want them all to be happy to be here.”

“To be honest, probably you have more news than me in terms of Jadon. For me, Jadon’s situation doesn’t change. It is exactly the same. For sure, in terms of numbers, he could do better, no doubt.”

Maresca added, “But it is not just about Jadon. I think we have more players in the same situation. I don’t need to give Jadon a message because I speak with Jadon every day.”

“I had a conversation yesterday with him. He just has to give his best until the end and this is what we want from Jadon.”

It has been reported that Chelsea are still keen on signing Sancho permanently, potentially with the intention of selling him for a profit in the summer transfer window.

United set to make a massive U-turn, pushing to re-sign star they pushed out in 2023 – report

Manchester United are considering re-signing David de Gea, as per reports.

Much has been written about ex-United boss Erik ten Hag’s disastrous decision to acquire Antony and Casemiro in big-money deals.

However, this season, Andre Onana, another one of his expensive signings, has come under fire for his inconsistent performances. His lack of box dominance and dire positioning have led to many avoidable goals.

Signed to replace United’s long-term servant De Gea in the summer of 2023, Onana has yet to convince the United faithful that he is capable of filling the Spaniard’s void.

In a recent podcast appearance, ex-Red Devil Ben Foster suggested that replacing the United legend with Onana was one of the biggest transfer mistakes in Premier League history. Now, a report in Spain suggests the club’s hierarchy is trying to make amends.

Manchester United want to re-sign David de Gea

According to Fichajes, United are “seriously considering” De Gea’s return.

The 34-year-old, who spent more than 12 months on the sidelines after exiting Old Trafford, has made a strong comeback at Fiorentina.

De Gea has kept an impressive 10 clean sheets, helping Fiorentina to push for a European place. La Viola currently sit eighth in the Serie A table, a place above AC Milan.

His solid performances have “not gone unnoticed” at United who “know his departure was a mistake, and they want to recover what they should never have lost.”

De Gea’s contract in Florence is due to expire at the end of the season but Fiorentina “will activate a clause to extend his contract for another year.” As such, the Mancunians will have to hold talks with the Italian outfit to bring back their former goalkeeper.

Having said that, the Premier League is a different beast and De Gea’s resurgence should not cover up the fact that he also made a number of costly errors in his last 24 months in Manchester.

Instead of knocking on the doors of the ageing shot-stopper, Ineos is more likely to replace Onana with a younger player. As such, it is best to take the claim with a huge pinch of salt.

Brighton plotting shock move for United star pushed to the fringes by Amorim – report

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof is reportedly on the radar of several Premier League clubs.

Ruben Amorim’s arrival has led to more opportunities for centre-backs at United due to the Portuguese tactician’s formation that sees him field three central defenders.

However, the introduction of 3-4-3 at Old Trafford has done little to improve the fortunes of Lindelof.

Amorim has handed the 30-year-old just two league starts so far. Most recently, he left him as an unused substitute in United’s 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest.

Lindelof’s situation at United has not impacted his role at Sweden, as he remains a key player under Jon Dahl Tomasson. Further, a number of clubs are looking to sign him in the summer.

According to TBR Football, Brighton & Hove Albion are keeping tabs on Lindelof and could hand him an opportunity to continue his stay in the Premier League.

The Swede’s contract at United is due to expire in June, allowing him to join a new club on a free transfer this summer.

The Seagulls face competition from Everton and West Ham United.

Early this year, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Moyes wanted to sign Lindelof in the winter window.

The ex-United manager is showing an interest in the player ahead of the summer as well.

Benfica, who sold Lindelof to United in a £40 million deal in 2017, are also considering re-signing their former talent.

United, meanwhile, are understood to be exploring the market to find a new defender. Recently, The Peoples Person covered a report saying the Red Devils see Genoa star Koni De Winter as Lindelof’s possible replacement.

Man Utd ‘one key advantage’ over Liverpool, Chelsea to sign £40m star revealed with ‘feasible swap deal’

According to reports, ‘one key advantage’ is boosting Manchester United’s chances of beating Liverpool and Chelsea in the race to sign Liam Delap.

The 22-year-old progressed through the ranks at Man City, who sold him to Premier League rivals Ipswich Town during last year’s summer transfer window.

Delap shone on loan in the Championship with Hull City last season, and joined newly-promoted Ipswich for around £20m.

The England U21 international has surpassed expectations this term, grabbing ten goals and two assists in 31 appearances for Kieran McKenna’s struggling side.

Ipswich are unlikely to retain Delap following their expected relegation, as he is attracting interest from several Big Six sides ahead of this summer.

Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal are likely to be in the market for a new striker this summer, and Delap represents a cheaper solution with his reported £40m release clause.

The Red Devils are crying out for a new striker as Rasmus Hojlund and Joshuz Zirkzee have been heavily criticised for their poor performances this season.

Delap’s Premier League experience is a factor in his favour, with the potential alternatives including Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Osimhen, who are among the contenders to be this year’s leading scorer in Europe.

Regarding Delap, a report from The Daily Mail claims Man Utd have ‘internally stepped up’ with ‘one key advantage’ boosting Ruben Amorim’s side in a ‘five-way battle’.

‘Manchester United have held more discussions internally over a potential summer move for Ipswich striker Liam Delap.

‘United will face competition from a number of rivals including Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle and his old club Manchester City who have a buyback option on the 22-year-old.’

‘One advantage in their favour is that technical director Jason Wilcox knows Delap well from his time at City’s academy.

‘A striker is one of United’s priorities in the transfer market this summer, and they will try to fund a deal by offloading Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.’

It is also claimed that a summer ‘swap deal’ involving Osimhen is ‘feasible’.

‘Victor Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, is another striker on United’s radar and that could feasibly involve a swap deal involving Alejandro Garnacho who was linked with the Italian club in January.

‘Rashford has a £40m option in his loan deal at Aston Villa, and it’s understood he could join other clubs for a similar fee.
