Andy Cole will be honoured at a charity dinner hosted by the Association of Former Manchester United Players at Old Trafford on Thursday 24 April, with tickets available to all fans.

The treble-winning striker scored 121 goals in 275 appearances for United between 1995 and 2001. He won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups and one Champions League, making him one of the most prolific and successful goal-scorers in the history of the club.

Former club captain Gary Neville will also be at the dinner in tribute to his former team-mate, together with several other playing heroes and special guests from Manchester United past and present.

The dinner will be held in the Manchester Suite of Old Trafford, with support from United, and hosted by the matchday ‘voice of Old Trafford’ Alan Keegan. He will interview Cole and Neville on-stage, followed by a charity auction and entertainment.

Tickets priced from £125 each can be bought online, with additional special prices for tables and VIP meet-and-greet packages.

Enquiries can be made via email to AFMUP@manutd.co.uk. All profits from the dinner will go to AFMUP and the charities it supports.

Video: “Unparalleled” 19yo academy ball carrier has “caught Amorim’s eye”, first-team debut coming very soon – report

Given the performance of Manchester United’s big-name players and the numerous injuries, Ruben Amorim has been forced to turn to the Academy and he has not been disappointed.

The Portuguese has handed Chido Obi, Ayden Heaven and Harry Amass their debuts this season and the Red Devils are second for minutes afforded in the Premier League to teenage stars.

And judging from reports, the head coach is unlikely to stop with only three with Sekou Kone tipped to earn his first senior minutes this season.

Moorhouse’s impressive skill-set

The Malian is not the only midfielder who has impressed the 40-year-old with The Peoples Person relaying how Jack Moorhouse has caught the former Sporting CP boss’ eye.

The 19-year-old has three goals and one assist from seven starts for the U21s with his ability to run with the ball at his feet termed “unparalleled”.

In the most recent reserve game against Nottingham Forest, the Mancunian displayed what he is all about, turning his marker inside his own half before carrying the ball all the way into the box before Chido Obi applied the finishing touch to the excellent move.

And The Daily Mail have claimed that Amorim is so impressed with what he has seen that a first-team debut is on the cards before the season concludes.

First team debut on the cards

“His ability to drive through midfield is unparalleled compared to a lot of his peers in the United academy, and we reported back in December that his display at Carrington against Southampton caught Ruben Amorim’s eye.

“But there is growing confidence behind the scenes at United that the 19-year-old is in line to make his first-team debut before the end of the season.”

— Nathan Salt (@NathSalt1) April 7, 2025

The Ireland U21 international has already been a part of two senior matchday squads, against two North London clubs, but did not make it off the bench.

Interestingly, the report also adds that Moorhouse is attracting significant loan interest from League One and League Two clubs with Amorim set to watch him keenly during the post-season Asia Tour as well as during the club’s pre-season tour to the US.

More chances in the pipeline

“We understand that there have already been enquiries from multiple EFL League One and Two clubs keen on taking him on loan next season.

“It was also pointed out by sources that Moorhouse is a prime contender to feature on both the post-season tour in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur, as well as the pre-season tour in the United States, in a bid to state his claims to Amorim.”

The Carrington graduate certainly has the skill-set needed to thrive in the first-team environment with Amorim’s squad crying out for a midfield ball carrier like him.

All Moorhouse needs to do now is keep working hard and hopefully, he can remain injury-free so that the club can continue to see the best version of him in the coming days.

“Stop spreading false information”: Father of United wonderkid slams “crazy” transfer “lies” about his son

The father of Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel has seemingly come out and firmly denied rumours suggesting they are actively exploring a move away from the club.

Gabriel is widely regarded as one of the most gifted young talents in the country, earning high praise for his incredible ability.

Referred to as “Kid Messi,” Gabriel made history on Saturday when he became the youngest ever player to feature for United’s U18s – a feat he marked with two goals.

The 14-year-old was introduced from the substitute bench in the 63rd minute and scored two goals in open play as United beat Leeds 13-1.

It has been stated that several clubs around Europe, including Real Madrid and Barcelona, are keen on luring Gabriel away from United and his display over the weekend proved why he is in high demand. According to Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils fast-tracked Gabriel into the U18s partly to convince him to stay.

MEN add that the teenager’s camp has indeed “toyed with the possibility” of leaving United, amid a growing trend of young players moving between the country’s top clubs.

This was also pointed out by the Daily Mail, who noted that United are aware they’re facing a battle to keep the highly-rated Gabriel.

There have been some unverified claims on social media that Gabriel’s father, former Irish defender Joe O’Cearuill, has been actively seeking a move away from Old Trafford by circulating his son’s name around Europe.

However, O’Cearuill has personally dismissed those rumours.

He wrote on X, “The amount of lies people post is crazy.”

“Please stop spreading false information about me and JJ. Someone writes some lies and everyone jumps on bandwagon.”

It’s worth noting that Gabriel holds an Irish passport, which would allow him to move abroad at a younger age than if he held only an English passport.

Have you seen our record v French clubs?

Manchester United’s history with French sides dates back 60 years to 1965, when we played Strasbourg over two legs in the quarter-finals of the Fairs Cup.

The Alsace club were on the receiving end of a rampant Reds’ performance in France, as we ran out 5-0 winners at the Stade de la Meinau.

That rollicking victory, with the goals shared between Denis Law (x2), Bobby Charlton, John Connelly and David Herd, proved a sign of things to come, as we’ve tended to have the upper hand when drawn against clubs of a Gallic persuasion.

United have won 17 of our 32 meetings versus Ligue Un outfits, with 11 draws and just four defeats on our record.

Saint-Etienne were dispatched in a 1977 Cup Winners’ Cup tie – our ‘home’ leg infamously played at Home Park in Plymouth, after violence in France – before we edged out Montpellier on the way to success in that same competition 14 years later.

Goalscorers Clayton Blackmore and Steve Bruce take the acclaim, after United see off Montpellier in 1991.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side progressed despite drawing the Old Trafford leg on that occasion but fell foul of the away-goals rule when held 1-1 by Monaco in the 1998 Champions League quarter-finals.

David Trezeguet’s early thunderbolt in M16 proved pivotal for Jean Tigana’s men, who are still the only French outfit to eliminate United from a European tie.

A theme of these fixtures has been the sheer variety of opposition and we doubled our tally of different sides faced over the next four years.

Marseille, Bordeaux, Lille and Nantes were group-stage opposition between 1999 and 2002 and, while Bordeaux were defeated home and away, Ferguson’s men often found things a little tougher on the road, in hostile atmospheres.

William Gallas scored the only goal as Marseille became the first French club to beat us, while United were reliant on a stoppage-time penalty from Ruud van Nistelrooy to rescue a point at Nantes.

Ruud was again the main man in 2004, breaking Law’s European scoring record as United recovered from two goals down to draw with Lyon, before registering in the return at the Theatre of Dreams – alongside a more unlikelier source of goals in Gary Neville.

Les Gones were the premier French club at this time, winning seven straight championships, but couldn’t get the better of the Reds, losing a Champions League knockout tie in 2008 when Carlos Tevez’s late away goal tipped the balance in our favour.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blasted home this brilliant goal, on our first visit to Lille.

Between those meetings with Thursday’s opposition, we played out four tight encounters with Lille across two group-stage campaigns.

A 1-0 reverse at the Stade de France helped confirm a shock early exit in 2005, but United gained our revenge 18 months later, eliminating Les Dogues in the last 16 courtesy of a quickly taken free-kick from Ryan Giggs and Henrik Larsson’s header, in the final Old Trafford game of his loan spell.

After that glut of match-ups in the early years of this century, trips to France have become a relative rarity.

Marseille pushed us close in 2011 but were ultimately denied by Javier Hernandez, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s hat-trick put paid to Saint-Etienne hopes in the first knockout tie of our 2017 Europa League run.

The Reds advanced to the quarter-finals of the Champions League following this 2011 victory over Marseille…

Probably our most famous foray to France saw us land in Paris with a two-goal deficit to bridge, back in March 2019.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was caretaker manager and… well, you know how the rest goes, don’t you?

A Romelu Lukaku double brought an understrength and youthful United side back into contention, but we were still heading out of the Champions League when, with time ebbing away, an innocuous-looking shot from Diogo Dalot struck the arm of Presnel Kimpembe.

Four minutes of checks ensued before the referee pointed to the spot, and Marcus Rashford converted under the most extraordinary pressure to secure one of United’s great European wins.

A rendezvous with the Parisians in 2020 marks our most recent jaunt to France, with Rashford again scoring a late winner in the capital, albeit with no fans to celebrate in front of this time, due the Covid-19 pandemic.

There was also a sour note to the Old Trafford return, as PSG made the most of Fred’s red card and ran out 3-1 winners, a result that ultimately saw them progress to the knockout stages of Europe’s premier competition, at the expense of United.

Hopefully the upcoming clashes with Lyon will be more fondly recalled in future years!

“I couldn’t speak”: 32-yo star reveals his relationship with ex-United boss was so difficult he started losing hair

Paul Pogba has reflected on his relationship with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

Pogba, 32, is on the hunt for a new club after serving an 18-month doping ban. He is a free agent after leaving Juventus following the mutual termination of his contract in Turin.

The first time he left Turin, the optics surrounding the Frenchman were very different. In the summer of 2016, Pogba was one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe.

United, his former club, fought with Real Madrid for his services and eventually won the race after breaking the then-transfer record by paying north of €100 million to Juventus.

However, the much-talked-about move didn’t go as planned, sending his career into a downward spiral.

One of the big reasons behind his frustrating stint at Old Trafford was his and Jose Mourinho’s failure to get on the same page. The ex-United gaffer used his big-money signing all across the midfield but could not maximise his potential.

Shining light on his difficult relationship with Mourinho, Pogba recalled to GQ France: “I didn’t understand. I was a player with a big role in the team, and suddenly, I found myself on the bench.”

He continued: “I couldn’t speak, there was no communication. I wasn’t happy, and a football player who isn’t happy can’t perform well. I fell into depression without even realizing it. Because no one teaches us what depression is. Until one day, I started getting bald spots in my scalp. I didn’t understand what it was. They told me it was stress.”

Mourinho was eventually shown the exit door and replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Solskjaer appeared to understand Pogba’s skill sets better and used his attacking instincts in the final third to great effect but injury issues limited his appearances under the Norwegian.

Ultimately, United and the player decided it was best to go separate ways in 2022.

In February, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United are interested in signing Pogba for a third time, owing to midfield crisis at the club. However, things on that front have gone quiet of late.

Not one but two elite PL attackers on United’s agenda, Amorim is preparing quite the team for next season – report

Manchester United’s record in front of goal is pretty abysmal with the Red Devils managing 36 shots in their last two Premier League games without troubling the scorers.

In fact, Ruben Amorim’s side have outscored only five teams this season, pretty damning statistics for a club like United. Which is why the Portuguese tactician is desperate for attacking reinforcements.

Viktor Gyokeres was his first choice but the Swede has his eyes on playing in the Champions League, something that is not guaranteed at Old Trafford next season.

Victor Osimhen is the new favourite but owing to his wage demands, Saudi Pro League seems to be his likely next destination.

Liam Delap the new top choice

Which is why the 20-time English league champions are looking at more cost-effective options and Liam Delap of Ipswich Town fits the bill perfectly.

The former Manchester City ace is Premier League proven and is young and with the Tractor Boys on their way down to the Championship, he 22-year-old is likely to be available for a cut-price fee.

But Amorim needs more than just a striker, with even Rasmus Hojlund struggling for service at times. Which is why a creative force behind the No 9 is also needed.

And as per Givemesport, the three-time Champions League winners are also looking to add Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matheus Cunha in the same window.

Cunha also a target

“Manchester United are poised to open discussions with the representatives of Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha over a potential move to Old Trafford alongside Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap as preparations are made for the summer transfer window, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.

“GMS sources have been told that Manchester United are interested in landing Cunha in the same transfer window as Delap instead of only pushing ahead with securing one target.”

He has been the difference between Wolves being in the relegation zone and being 12 points clear at this stage. The Brazilian is quite the goal threat, with 15 goals in all competitions and four assists.

Amorim knows all about the 25-year-old after having seen him dominate the last time the two sides met this season, which resulted in a Wolves win.

Can United afford both?

The former Atletico Madrid ace dropped deep to link-up play, made the right choice of pass more often than not and eventually made the telling contribution in the game, scoring directly from a corner while also grabbing the assist for the second goal.

While his ability on the ball is impressive, his work-rate off the ball is also exceptional, which will please Amorim as well.

He has a release clause of £62.5 million, something the Red Devils could struggle to trigger given they also have other areas in the team in need of reinforcements. Face-to-face talks have been planned for the near future.

The forward has a lot of suitors but he is hell-bent on moving to a big club, with Nottingham Forest expected to be disappointed even if they qualify for the Champions League.

An interesting summer awaits United and it will be intriguing to see which players INEOS ultimately bring in to help the head coach.

Video: Fabrizio Romano provides stunning update on United’s plans of re-signing former legend

While attacking reinforcements are a must, Ruben Amorim could do with help between the sticks as well given Andre Onana’s form this season for Manchester United.

The Cameroonian has made multiple high-profile mistakes since the Portuguese took charge while his normally imperious passing has also let the head coach down.

As a result, there have been murmurs that the 40-year-old is open to letting the former Inter Milan star leave. And rather shockingly, the Red Devils have been linked with a move for former stalwart David de Gea.

— ACF Fiorentina English (@ACFFiorentinaEN) April 7, 2025

The Spaniard was let go after 12 years in Manchester by former boss Erik ten Hag for his inability with the ball at his feet, something the Dutchman refused to compromise with.

DDG renaissance

After being out of the game for a year, the Spain international signed a one-year deal with Fiorentina last summer and he has impressed in Italy so much so that he was linked with a return to his old stomping ground.

The 34-year-old has kept 10 clean sheets in Serie A with Fiorentina in eighth place while they also remain alive in the UEFA Conference League.

After excellent performances this season, de Gea’s contract will now be valid until June 2026. pic.twitter.com/5G5jWNE0k3

— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) April 7, 2025

He was particularly impressive in the team’s most recent league fixture against AC Milan, making numerous eye-catching saves to help Fiorentina earn a point.

And now Fabrizio Romano has revealed that De Gea will not be leaving the Artemio Franchi Stadium anytime soon with the Viola set to trigger their one-year option.

No homecoming

“Fiorentina are set to activate the option to extend David de Gea’s contract for one more season.

“After excellent performances this season, de Gea’s contract will now be valid until June 2026,” Romano wrote on X.

A move for De Gea was not too realistic given Amorim’s demands on his shot-stopper. The 20-time English league champions have James Trafford, Diogo Costa and Gregor Kobel on their radar as well as a couple of Championship stars.

Backup keeper Altay Bayindir has also been linked with an exit and a goalkeeping revamp could be on the cards should budget permit. An area worth keeping an eye on.

“You can like it or not, but…”: Amorim offers baffling excuse for United’s horror run under him

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has strongly suggested that the “evolution of the game” is to blame for the club’s woes.

Amorim has endured a difficult time since he replaced Erik ten Hag in November last year.

Despite having overseen 30 matches since his appointment, United remain stuck in the bottom half of the Premier League table, with Sunday’s draw against Manchester City merely cementing their position in 13th place.

The Red Devils have won just two of their last eight matches, and at this point, the Europa League stands as their only realistic chance of salvaging the season, with the added incentive of Champions League qualification should they go on to win the competition.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Amorim suggested that United’s struggles stem from the club’s failure to adapt to the modern game – a factor he believes is contributing to the challenges he and his players are currently facing.

Amorim also stressed that United can no longer depend on individual brilliance or the aura of fear that once underpinned Sir Alex Ferguson’s era of dominance.

The Portuguese coach told Sky Sports, “The game is completely different and you have to be so good in your base and then that individual aspect and the freedom and the fluidity of the game is going to appear. But, for that, I think we need time.”

“There was an evolution, you can like it or not, but there was an evolution because you have all the games from the opponent’s detail, from your departments, so you can understand better the movements that they make.”

“In that evolution, you have to be better tactically. Sometimes I talk to [Darren] Fletcher, about how he prepared the games with Sir Alex Ferguson, it’s completely different.”

He continued, “There was more a feeling, that aspect of the individual talent. I think today is not enough and you can see some of the best teams, especially if you remember the years of Galacticos, they had maybe the best players in the world, but you need to have a connection.”

“We cannot win the games just like I said with the individual aspect and let the players do whatever they feel. I don’t see the game like that. I see the game in a different way and again, nowadays, they know everything about our players. The way [Alejandro] Garnacho will use the right foot on the left side, every detail the opponent knows.”

“So we need to have an idea of how to play as a team and then expect the individual part to help us. Because in the end, that is the crucial point to make a difference in the game. Sometimes we lack that creativity in the last third, sometimes the quality. And when I talk about the quality, it’s not just the individual quality, it’s the understanding of the game in the final third.”

“So I want to see both because I want to entertain people, but I also like to see my team defending like they defend in this game.”

Up next for United is a trip to Lyon for the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie. They’ll then head to St James’ Park on Sunday to face Newcastle, before welcoming Lyon to Old Trafford for the return leg.

“I can do it”: United star explains what Amorim wants from him and stats show he is getting things right

The Manchester United players are slowly coming to grips with Ruben Amorim’s style as seen from the number of chances they are creating in each of their recent games.

While goals have proved elusive, the defenders and midfielders are working much better in tandem and that can be seen from the way the players are linking up when going forward.

Unlike the past, where the players have been encouraged to play transitional football, the Portuguese head coach wants more control and he has specific demands from each position.

The 40-year-old has encouraged his centre-backs to push forward when they have the ball, and that was seen a couple of times against Manchester City on Sunday when the likes of Noussair Mazraoui, Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro had the ball at their feet.

Defenders showing bravery on the ball

Being brave on the ball is another prerequisite with centre-backs asked to break lines with their passing. Lisandro Martinez was doing that with great regularity before his season-ending injury.

And the young Frenchman has stepped up in his absence, notching 90 percent passing accuracy in all three of his last league appearances.

Yoro explained as much to club media. “The three defenders need to control the game. If I can bring the ball forward for the strikers, for the midfielders, it is good for us, so I try to do it,” he said after the derby.

“Ruben asked me to do it. I am ready to do it and I can do it.”

In the Manchester derby, the 19-year-old registered a 90 percent passing accuracy rate with 21 passes being forward line-breaking passes.

Against Nottingham Forest last week, he notched 93 percent passing accuracy while completing a 100 percent of his long-ball attempts.

And in the game against Ipswich Town before the international break, he completed 95 percent of his passes while also registering a 100 percent dribbling accuracy (all stats via sofascore).

What is most impressive is the fact that he is playing on the left, which is not his natural side and yet he is excelling. This is his debut season in Manchester and it has been stop-start for him due to a couple of injuries.

Yoro excelling as per Amorim’s instructions

Which explains the slow start, something he admitted as well. But he revealed that his fitness is on the up every week and it is genuinely scary to think how high his ceiling can be.

“I had a little bit of adaptation when I came, but now it is better in every game. I think in every game I try to be better and I try to help the team and to be at 100 per cent.

“We played really well [against City]. I think we maybe deserved to score one goal. We have the clean sheet and one point but we need to continue like that, we have a lot of improvement now, so we need to continue.”

Amorim will be delighted with what he has seen from the former Lille star and hopefully, Yoro can keep at it in the games to come as the Red Devils look to qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League.

“Purely for money reasons”: United slammed for prioritising profit over players’ wellbeing after latest announcement

The Professional Footballers’ Association have slammed Manchester United for putting profits before the welfare of their stars after announcing they will travel to Asia for a post-season tour immediately after the campaign comes to an end.

Earlier today, United confirmed that they will play friendly matches in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong in May.

The trip marks the club’s first post-season tour in the modern era and a return to Asia, following their victory over Liverpool in Bangkok back in July 2022.

The first match will see United come up against ASEAN All Stars in Kuala Lumpur’s Bukit Jalil National Stadium on May 28 before taking on Hong Kong, China in the Hong Kong Stadium two days later. The first game will take place just three days after the Red Devils’ final Premier League clash vs. Aston Villa at Old Trafford on May 25.

It’s estimated that the tour will net United €10 million – a significant boost for a club in dire financial shape, having posted losses of more than £300m over the last three years.

The concept of post-season matches remains controversial, largely due to concerns over the increased workload placed on players.

The PFA has been vocal in expressing these concerns and issued a statement following United’s announcement.

A PFA spokesperson told The Mirror, “We know there are commercial realities involved in what has become an increasingly global game, but there has to be a balance. It’s clear that the demands on players, caused by a 12-month football calendar, are becoming unsustainable. We all know the number of injuries and extended absences isn’t a coincidence.”

“It’s not just the number of games that’s the issue. It’s the long-haul travel, the limited recovery time, and the constant cycle of club and international duty. It all adds up physically and mentally and you can see the effect on performance. In the long term, that isn’t good for anybody.”

The PFA’s sustainability champion, David Wheeler, remarked about United’s plans, “It’s not only irresponsible from a climate point of view, but from a player care point of view, physically and mentally.”

“They are human beings. They get paid very well, as we know, but they have a limit to what their bodies can take and how they cope with it from a mental health point of view.”

“A lot of these guys will have friends and family that they won’t have spent much time with during the course of the season and the international players, especially, don’t even get a break during the season.”

“It’s interesting that they’ve admitted it’s purely for money reasons, because there aren’t any other reasons to do it. To me, it seems quite galling in the aftermath of the Jim Ratcliffe interview, where he talked about how the club doesn’t have any money and they had to cut lunches for the staff, money to the ex-players’ foundation and put up prices for the fans.”

Wheeler added, “Most players at that level are not going to be motivated by friendlies, let alone those that are taking them away from time they could be spending with their families and resting for the following season. There’s not much of a benefit apart from financial – yet there are plenty of other ways they could make money and be more efficient without dragging people who need a rest halfway across the world.”

“If United are challenging right at the top of the league and playing in the Champions League then that’s going to be much more lucrative than floundering where they are at the moment anyway.”

“My focus would be much more on the playing side of things than on a post-season tour of Asia. I know it’s not either or but it seems logical to me.”

United are back in action on Thursday when they go away to Lyon for the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie.
