Man United: Unai Emery talks ‘happy’ Marcus Rashford ‘smiling’ after Old Trafford escape

Unai Emery had positive words to say about Man United loanee Marcus Rashford ahead of Aston Villa’s Champions League quarter-final with PSG on Wednesday.

United fans will have fond memories of Rashford terrorising PSG, scoring a 90th-minute winner in Paris during the 2019/20 season group stage, as well as a 94th-minute penalty in a knockout tie the season before.

The Villans boss singled out a ‘happy’ and ‘smiling’ Rashford, highlighting the fact the England international is flourishing outside of the dreary shadow of Old Trafford.

The United schoolboy’s tumultuous time off the pitch spilled over into his performances for the Red Devils, manifesting in an apparent lack of desire to play for the club.

Fallings out with then-manager Erik Ten Hag and current head coach Ruben Amorim were a factor in his desire to leave the club he’d called home for nearly two decades.

Having made a loan move with a £40 million option to buy back in February, Rashford looks ready to flourish at his new club, something Emery touched on in his pre-PSG press conference.

“He is a good guy, he is humble, he is a very good professional player, he is really happy with his teammates, he has been demanding himself in everything. We want to work with him, with the team.”

Emery‘s comments are in stark contrast to the figure United fans became accustomed to seeing at Old Trafford in recent seasons.

He continued: “I think he is playing freely, he is playing comfortably, and this is the most important. We are trying to connect with him as a person firstly and, after that, to connect with him as a player.

“His process here is getting better as well. He is playing in two different positions, he started as a left winger, now he is playing more as a striker. How he can exploit his qualities as best as possible with us. This is the process we have, still work to do, still process to do, but the most important is his feeling.

“We are seeing him smiling, it is the best news we can have. I am seeing him happy, I am seeing him committed with everything we are doing.”

Rashford has provided four goal contributions in nine appearances for Villa since the move, with his next opportunity to impress coming at Parc des Princes on Wednesday.

Fabrizio Romano confirms United are in line to complete sensational deal at knockdown price

Manchester United could reportedly land Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap for a considerably lower fee than originally anticipated.

United are expected to dip into the market for striker reinforcements in the upcoming window, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggling to consistently come up with the goods in front of goal.

The Red Devils continue to be linked to a host of attackers including Victor Osimhen (currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli), Matheus Cunha (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Benjamin Sesko (RB Leipzig), Viktor Gyokeres (Sporting Lisbon) and Samu Aghehowa (Porto).

However, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Delap is United’s top striker target. The England youth international has been the standout performer for the Tractor Boys in what has ultimately been a disappointing return to Premier League football.

Ipswich are teetering on the edge of relegation to the Championship with seven games remaining, but despite their struggles, Delap has managed an impressive return of 12 goals in 30 Premier League appearances.

Delap was initially valued at £40 million, but it has now emerged that this figure would drop significantly if Kieran McKenna’s side suffer relegation.

According to The Guardian, United and Chelsea are “in a tussle” for the 22-year-old, whose release clause falls to £30m in the event that Ipswich go down.

The newspaper further notes, “The issue for Ipswich is not only that City have a 20% sell-on clause. Delap’s release clause dropping to £30m in the event of relegation is likely to cause a stir at Chelsea and United, with both sides looking to bolster their attacking options.”

This information has been corroborated by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano who wrote on X, “Liam Delap’s release clause at Ipswich Town will be worth £30m in case of relegation.”

“Manchester United and Chelsea, both keen on the player as he’s part of their shortlists for the summer transfer window.”

It’s understood that City are unlikely to use the buy-back option they included when selling Delap to Ipswich.

The player is also unlikely to be too keen on a return to the Etihad as he would be behind Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush in the pecking order.

Man Utd transfer: Huge boost as changing release clause revealed for top target in Chelsea battle

Manchester United and Chelsea target Liam Delap will have a release clause of £30m if (when) Ipswich are relegated from the Premier League.

Delap has been one of few bright spots for Ipswich in a difficult season in the top flight, scoring 12 goals in 30 appearances for Kieran McKenna’s side having signed from Manchester City for £20m in the summer.

His fine form has led him to be linked with a number of suitors, including United and Chelsea, who have been handed a boost in their bids to land him this summer with his release clause dropping from £40m to £30m upon their relegation.

United have Delap high on a striker shortlist that also includes Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.

The Red Devils will hope that technical director Jason Wilcox working with Delap in his time with the Manchester City academy will give them the advantage in signing the 22-year-old.

Chelsea are also thought to be very interested though and have had great success in luring young, talented players to the club to sign heavily incentivised contracts.

Another issue for Ipswich along with the relegation clause in Delap’s contract is the 20 per cent sell-on fee that City inserted into Delap’s contract, which will see the Citizens earn £6m from his £30m sale.

A report on Tuesday claimed Chelsea are the ‘firm favourites’ to sign Delap, who knows how hard the Blues are pushing to sign him and is attracted by what he sees as a clear avenue to the first team.

The same is surely true at Manchester United as well though, with both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggling to make a significant impact under Ruben Amorim this season.

But former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor warned Delap against a move to Old Trafford,

“I’d take him over what they’ve got,” Agbonlahor said when asked if United should be going for the England U21 international. “He’s better than Hojlund, better than Zirkzee.

“I’d probably tell him [Delap] not to go there. I feel like it’s negative at the moment at Man United. Anyone who goes there bar Fernandes has been a disappointment in recent years.

“I’d go to a different club. I’d want to go to Arsenal. I could see him at Arsenal, I really could.

“But has he done enough yet to warrant a move to a team that’s fighting for the Premier League title? I don’t know.

“Does he need a step in between that. Like a West Ham, they will need a striker in the summer. Maybe that might suit him better.

“I’m not sure but I do really rate him. He’s a great finisher, a big strong lad and he can hold his own in the Premier League.”

Video: Ever-present United star explains how Cristiano Ronaldo’s example has helped him transform his game

All eyes at Manchester United will now shift to their biggest game of the season, a quarter-final tie against Olympique Lyonnais with the first leg to be played at Lyon on Thursday night.

The Red Devils are languishing in 13th position in the Premier League and European qualification is all but ruled out via their league finish.

Their transfer budget and the players they can sign will literally depend on Champions League qualification, as Ruben Amorim suggested in the pre-match press conference and the players will need to give it their all tomorrow.

One player who will start the game at right wingback is Diogo Dalot, who has been an ever-present member of the team irrespective of who the boss has been.

Dalot’s availability

And the Portuguese star has played on either either flank and while he has not yet managed to grasp what Amorim wants from him at wingback, his availability has been a huge bonus for the head coach considering the injuries United have faced this season.

The right-back has missed only one game all season, and the former Porto ace explained how much work he has put in behind-the-scenes to improve his fitness.

He also revealed how United legend Cristiano Ronaldo has influenced his life outside of football and how he has been reaping the benefits thanks to heeding his compatriot’s advice.

“I would say have started to become a little bit more obsessed about being available. The first step to being able to play is being available.

“I switched my mind a bit about being available physically. I became a little bit more obsessed and having Cristiano [Ronaldo] as a teammate helped me. But overall, I always try to help my teammates. But every person is an individual. But I try do all I can.”

As Amorim revealed, Thursday’s game against the Ligue 1 side will be very different to what the 20-time English league champions have experienced in this competition so far this term.

Lyon challenge

Lyon are faster, stronger and more possession-based than Real Sociedad while their physicality will be a huge challenge for the three-time Champions League winners.

And Dalot was quick to respond, adding that the team are ready for the challenge. He added that the players have trained well and if they are sharp in the mind on the night, physically they can match their opposition.

“At this stage, we have to be ready for every scenario. We have prepared well. I think tomorrow, if we are sharp in our minds, we can make a very good game.”

Doubts about the team’s ability to handle intensity were raised during Sunday’s Manchester derby with plenty pointing to the fact that both teams appeared to be content with a point rather than going for the jugular.

Looking back at Derby day

But Dalot was insistent that United players gave it their all and should have won given the chances they created. He also added that the players are slowly coming to grips with the head coach’s demands with regards to tactics and positioning.

“I mean I can tell you straight away that it was a really intense game. I was on the pitch, I ran a lot, my teammates ran a lot and we fought really hard to be competitive. I think everyone in the stadium felt that we wanted to win the game and that we were really competitive.

“We were very compact as a team, and I think that is something we have been improving a lot. We created enough, I think, to win the game. In the end, I understand as a fan, that you watch Man City-Man United finishing 0-0 is not the same as a result with more goals. Everyone wants to see goals. But I thought the game was really intense and we did everything to win.”

United need to give it their all in the away leg and Dalot will be key, both offensively as well as defensively given Rayan Cherki‘s form. Hopefully, the team can make the fans proud.

“Not a full player at the moment”: Amorim makes controversial statements about key United star, says he lacks “pace”

Ruben Amorim says United have to be “really careful” with Kobbie Mainoo’s fitness ahead of Manchester United’s crunch Europa League quarter final first leg tie against Olympique Lyonnais tomorrow.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow’s game, the boss was asked how good it is to have Mainoo back with the squad.

“In this moment we have to be really careful with Kobbie He had some games out so we have to be careful with his fitness. We are really happy, he can play in so many positions, he can play as a 6 or a 10, We are really pleased with him, but we have to be careful with him.”

Asked for an update on the injuries to Matthijs de Ligt and Toby Collyer, the boss said:

“Matta has a problem with his foot. We are trying to assess. We don’t have the data on when he can return. Toby has a small issue in his leg, so we hope to have him in a few weeks.”

The next question was whether Mainoo can play as a central midfielder in his system.

“I think in England sometimes they played with three defenders, so he can play there,” he said.

“We need to help him. Casemiro is playing better because we are understanding better the way Casemiro can play. I think we can do that with Kobbie. He is good on the ball and near the opponent’s box.”

The next question was in regard to what more he needs to do, having played in central midfield for England.

“Yeah, but that’s the problem, in a way.

“When I see Kobbie, I see a lot of talent. But in the way I see it, I could be wrong, I see some things that Kobbie has to improve: the pace during the game. He has qualities he needs to improve in the build-up. Near the box, he has a lot of talent and that is why I think he did a really good game in the Europa League in that position.

“So when I see Kobbie Mainoo, I see not as a full player at the moment, because he is 19. If I say to Kobbie I have seen the final player, I don’t think I am helping Kobbie.”

The head coach was asked if Altay Bayindir would be selected again in the Europa League on his return from injury.

“”We will see,” he said. “Tomorrow, Onana is going to play. Altay is returning now. We have two top goalkeepers that are ready to play.”

Asked about Onana’s public spat with Nemanja Matic, Amorim said:

“If you see the full quote of Andre Onana, it is quite different. The first sentence is that ‘Lyon is a very, very good team’. Sometimes the players don’t listen to the full quotes and it is just a misunderstanding.

“I know Matic also, he is a great guy, so tomorrow is going to be a normal game.”

On tomorrow’s opponents, Amorim noted that “if you look in that department, it is quite simple, if you look at the team of Lyon, they are faster, stronger and bigger than Sociedad.

“Since [Paulo] Fonseca came here, they are winning most of their games, scoring more goals, they are suffering a fewer number of goals. They are a strong team physically, but they have a type of game that is really based on possession. So it’s going to be a different game.

“Against Sociedad we have to make a lot of runs, with Rasmus, with Josh. Against this team, we have to do things differently.”

Amorim was then asked what he felt about Matic’s comments about his time with him as a teammate. Matic had said Amorim was the most optimistic guy he had played with.

“That is clear; I am always saying that we are going to win the Premier League so you can see that I am always optimistic!

“I think I was born with that; you cannot change or fake it. Through your life, you are who you are. I see things in a positive way. Sometimes I get a bit frustrated but it’s a characteristic.”

The conversation then went back to Onana’s comments.

“It is really hard to deal with that. Again, if you look to all the quotes, you cannot see disrespect there, just respect. But to show confidence to his team. Everyone talks about bad things about Manchester United this year. Someone has to show some confidence in our team.

“So, I think that’s all. Again, I know Nemanja Matic really well and how good a guy he is. I think he has heard things by half, not the whole story, that for me is clear in this situation.”

On needing to win the Europa League, he said:

“It is really important in all aspects. The first one is to win a title, a European title. It will be massive for our confidence. Then to play in the Champions League in our club is completely different; the environment, the way we are going to face the summer, the budget for the summer, everything is connected with this competition.

“We know that pressure but again, it is not the biggest problem in United. We have other strengths to get this in the right way without Champions League next year. But of course, if we’re here, we want to win.”

The next question was about Joshua Zirkzee’s progress.

“I think he is improving in all aspects,” he said.

“I think he needs to be more selfish and that is a thing when you play as a striker. He is not a typical striker but he has to be more selfish.

“He is more aggressive now, he works better now, he is defending better now, he is connecting quite well and he played as a striker against Arsenal and did really, really well. In the games against Sociedad, he played more as a No.10. He is improving and showing good things.”

The final question was whether the intensity of the Europa League suits United better than the Premier League.

“It’s nothing tactical, I truly believe it is the pace of the game, the physicality of the game.” he replied. “We have the best league in the world [in England]. It is completely different. If you have one more second to think with the ball, it is a different game.

“Until now, I don’t know the game tomorrow. Until now, I have felt the difference from when we play in the Europa League to a Premier League game. That can give us an advantage to play better.”

Diogo Dalot was also speaking at the presser, see our separate article for his comments.

Amorim provides update on De Ligt and Collyer

Ruben Amorim has provided an update on the injuries that will see Matthijs De Ligt and Toby Collyer miss Manchester United’s Europa League quarter-final first leg against Lyon.

Centre-back De Ligt has been a growing influence on Amorim’s side over recent months and was one of our March Player of the Month nominees, before missing Sunday’s Manchester derby with an injury picked up in the previous game, away to Nottingham Forest.

Collyer, meanwhile, was an unused sub at Forest but also absent for the derby. The midfielder recently suffered a knock and, like De Ligt, will not play in Thursday’s tie at the Groupama Stadium, from where Ruben Amorim spoke about both players in his pre-match press conference.

“Matta has a problem in his foot, we are trying to assess. We still don’t have the data that he can return,” explained Amorim on De Ligt, before elaborating on Collyer’s knock.

“Toby has a small issue in his leg so we hope to have him in a few weeks.”

While the Reds will be without the duo for the 20:00 BST kick-off in Lyon, Amorim’s 23-man squad does include midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who was spotted in training this morning after a spell on the sidelines.

Full-back Luke Shaw, an unused substitute on Sunday when he was back among our matchday selection for the first time since December, could also be in line for return minutes after being part of the travelling group that landed in France earlier today.

Youngsters Jaydan Kamason, Godwill Kukonki and Jack Moorhouse have made the trip too, after impressing for our Academy in recent weeks, and would be making their first-team debuts if called upon tomorrow night.

Ruben delivers a clear message about Kobbie

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has provided a fitness update on Kobbie Mainoo after the midfielder was named in our travelling squad to face Lyon.

Mainoo has not played since our match against Leicester City on 7 February due to injury, but he looked fit and fresh when pictured training with the group at Carrington on Wednesday morning.

Kobbie has since flown to France for United’s much-anticipated Europa League quarter-final first leg at the Groupama Stadium, prompting fans to wonder if he will have a role to play.

While speaking in a press conference to preview Thursday night’s match, Amorim explained there will be an element of caution with the Academy graduate due to his recent layoff.

“In this moment, we have to be careful with Kobbie,” said Ruben.

“He had some weeks out, so we have to be careful with his fitness. We are really happy to have more options and an option like Kobbie Mainoo, with the quality that he has, he can play in different positions – he has already played as a six, as an eight, as a 10.

“So we are really pleased to have Kobbie Mainoo but we have to be careful, and we need Kobbie Mainoo fit and fresh.”

Mainoo enjoyed an unforgettable breakout season in 2023/24 after making his senior debut, winning the Emirates FA Cup and playing in the European Championship final with England.

The youngster has experienced some injury problems this campaign but Ruben admires his talent and believes it will take time to develop his game fully.

“Yeah, I think in England sometimes they played with three defenders also,” our head coach said. “It was more or less the same position [as in our team], so he can play [there].

“Of course, we need to help him. We need to find a little bit, like Casemiro in this moment is playing better, because we are understanding better the way that Casemiro can play, and I think we can do that with Kobbie, because he has a lot of qualities.

“He’s really good on the ball. But he’s also really good near the opponent’s box, so we’ll try to manage all that, to try to find the right space for a player like Kobbie.”

Asked how he can help Kobbie, Ruben said: “I think that is also a little bit the problem [that he’s achieved so much so young]. When I see Kobbie Mainoo, I see a lot of talent, but in the way I see – I could be wrong, that’s for sure – I see some things that Kobbie Mainoo has to improve.

“The space during the game, he has the qualities, like I said, in the build-up he needs to improve, and near the box he has a lot of talent, and that’s why I think he did a very good game in the Europa League in that position [against FCSB].

“When I see Kobbie Mainoo, I see him not like a full player in the moment, because he’s 19. If I say to Kobbie, ‘you are done, you are the final player’ I think I’m not helping Kobbie, that’s all.”

Man Utd bites back at Matic after ‘worst in history’ slam as war of words continues

Andre Onana has responded to Nemanja Matic’s jibe over him being “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United history” with a jibe of his own.

Onana and Matic look set to go head-to-head on Thursday as United travel to Lyon for the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final and have done their bit to increase the tension ahead of the game.

Lyon are currently fifth in Ligue 1 while United sit in 13th in the Premier League, but Onana claimed they are “way better” than the French side.

“We all know the importance of this game, we will go there with the winning mentality,” Onana said.

“We have to go there and show who we are. If we are focused, stay compact and together and follow the gameplan we will be winning the game. Of course it’s not going to be easy but I think we are way better than them.”

When asked about the criticism he has received from supporters this season, he added: “It doesn’t affect me because the decision I make is to help the team.

“Sometimes I will make the right decision, sometimes I will make the wrong decision. When I feel my players need to rest I have to take my time; when I feel we need to speed up the game I will do it.”

Matic – who’s made 34 appearances for Lyon this season – didn’t take kindly to Onana’s suggestion, claiming the Cameroon international is “one of the worst goalkeepers in Man Utd history”.

“Onana? I respect everyone, but to say that, you need to give an answer. If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history, you need to take care what you’re talking [about],” Matic said.

“If David de Gea or Peter Schmeichel or [Edwin] van der Sar said that, then I will question myself, but if you are one of the statistically worst goalkeepers in Man Utd modern history, then he needs to show that before he says. We will see.”

And now Onana has taken to social media to insist he never meant to be disrespectful of Lyon, before aiming a dig at the former United midfielder in response.

Onana wrote: “I would never be disrespectful to another club. We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent. We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud.

“At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.”

Matic also reflected on his time at Old Trafford ahead of the clash, insisting “the conditions were perfect” before making a damning comparison to his time at Chelsea.

“We did our best every single year, the players, the coaches, but we didn’t win,” Matic added.

“If I compare how we did with United now, then we did great, but of course, United cannot be happy finishing second.

“United need to be winning leagues. We gave it our best and sometimes we’d get criticised, but I didn’t see any major problems in the club. The organisation was very good, the conditions perfect.

“The difference I felt after Chelsea was that, at Chelsea, everything was about the result and winning trophies.

“That was the spirit in the whole club, even from the man who cuts the grass. Roman Abramovich would only ask us about results.

“At United, it was more commercial-minded. I started to think that after a couple of months in the club.”

Rasmus Hojlund insists this one thing is more important than winning the Europa League this season

Rasmus Hojlund has taken issue with the idea that winning the Europa League would “rescue” Manchester United’s season, insisting that his side are “going in the right direction” regardless.

The beleaguered centre-forward was asked by ESPN on Disney+ in Denmark whether lifting the trophy in Bilbao next month would rescue an otherwise dismal season for the club.

He responded: “Yeah, I guess so in some ways. But then again, I don’t like the word ‘rescue’. It’s more of a learning curve, and trying to have a good fundamental to build on for next season.”

Whether next season involves European football being played at Old Trafford depends almost entirely on the progress of Ruben Amorim’s men in Europe’s second-tier competition.

They line up against Olympique Lyonnaise in the first leg of the quarter-final tomorrow night as they continue to push for some silverware and a place in the Champions League next campaign.

ESPN claim that missing out on the flagship competition would trigger a “financial nightmare” for United which would “leave a £100 million hole”.

But for Hojlund, the team are starting to make real progress under Amorim and should be a different proposition next season, although the project is a long-term one still in its infancy.

“I guess we’re still quite early in the phase, aren’t we,” he said. “Then again, we are going in the right direction.”

He added: “We’re starting to understand each other, but like the coach is saying… every time he goes in the media, he says we have so much to improve and everybody needs to do better.

“We need to develop, all of us, so that’s the target.”

The 22-year-old has five goals and three assists in 10 Europa League matches, compared to three goals and one assist in 26 Premier League games, and he will be desperate to continue that form against Lyon and, hopefully, beyond.

However, his listless performance against Manchester City at the weekend won’t have done him any favours, particularly with Joshua Zirkzee looking much more threatening when he came off the bench to replace him.

Man Utd news: Rio Ferdinand ‘would sign’ Prem midfielder who ‘reminds’ him of Michael Carrick

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has told the club he “would sign” a Premier League midfielder who “reminds” him of another Red Devils icon, Michael Carrick.

United have struggled to compete in the Premier League for the past couple of seasons. Last term, they came eighth – their worst Premier League finish ever – and look as if they’ll do worse this season, currently 13th.

Ruben Amorim’s system has not been adapted to fantastically, and reinforcements are likely this summer, as he attempts to find players who can operate in it. He already has one, in Manuel Ugarte, who played under him at Sporting CP.

That he has played in the system previously, and the midfield doesn’t alter all too much no matter how the system changes, Ugarte should have no problems, and Ferdinand feels a new midfielder should be joining to play with him.

“I want a centre-midfielder to play alongside Ugarte,” he said on Rio Ferdinand Presents.

Adam Wharton. I would go and get him. The reason I would take him is he can get on the ball and transfer it up the pitch, he’s got a great range of passing.

“I think he would be a great addition to the United squad. He reminds me of Michael Carrick a bit.”

Wharton ranks very highly in terms of progressive passers across the top-five leagues in Europe. He is also adept at sweeping up the ball in midfield, either via interceptions or tackles.
