Newcastle United will look to keep their Champions League push on track when they host Man United at St James’ Park in the Premier League on Super Sunday.

Carabao Cup winners Newcastle United already have a Europa Conference League spot in the bag, though they’d surely prefer to swap it for a Champions League spot.

They’d also quite like to stuff United.

This famous old fixture represents nothing but pride for visitors Man United, who were never threatened by relegation and have left it too late to make a push for Europe.

Andre Onana hit the headlines for his comments ahead of their meeting with Lyon, before hitting the ball into his net and then directly into the path of Rayan Cherki.

Nemanja Matic’s response to Onana’s ‘way better than Lyon’ comment was over the top, unnecessarily, deeply personal, and above all, absolutely right. He’s a bombscare.

Eddie Howe will be happy to hear that Ruben Amorim has backed the Ghanaian ‘stopper,’ making winning on Saturday that much easier.

Newcastle vs Man United prediction

We have no hesitation in backing Newcastle United to win this match, simply because they will. That said, 4/6 is both a generous price and one that we don’t want to bet on.

A recent trend in this fixture is the winning team keeping a clean sheet, with five of the previous six meetings seeing the victor shut out the loser.

Another consideration is the margin of victory, as the Toon marched into Old Trafford and recorded a 2-0 victory earlier this season.

Amorim’s side may have one eye on Thursday’s Europa League renewal with Lyon, meaning a couple of changes that could aid Newcastle’s cause.

Casemiro playing three matches in eight days seems unlikely, so dropping Bruno back robs United of creativity and would allow Eddie Howe’s side to batter their midfield.

Likewise, we could see some changes in defence. Above all, we just expect the atmosphere and the intensity of Newcastle’s performance to get the job done.

Newcastle team news

Eddie Howe has missed training sessions due to illness this week, though he’s expected to be in the dugout on Sunday.
Lewis Hall, Sven Botman, Jamal Lascelles, Joe Willock and Anthony Gordon are expected to miss out.

Jason Tindall revealed on Friday that Gordon’s injury is still thought to not be serious, though there was no indication he can play on Sunday.

The immovable midfield trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton will be in action again.

Jacob Murphy will be hoping his purple patch continues as he joins Harvey Barnes and top goalscorer Alexander Isak in the attack.

Newcastle expected line-up

Pope – Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento – Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton – Murphy, Isak, Barnes

Man United team news

United will be largely unchanged from Thursday’s 2-2 draw in France, though Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount could start if they’re fit enough.

Ayden Heaven, Jonny Evans, Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt are ruled out due to injury, meaning the only rotation may see Victor Lindelof replace Harry Maguire.

Fernandes may drop into midfield alongside Manuel Ugarte if Casemiro is afforded a rest.

Christian Eriksen has been utilised on either side of Europa League fixtures, so he may be handed a start alongside Alejandro Garnacho.

Amorim has a decision to make upfront with goalscorer Joshua Zirkzee deserving of a start ahead of Rasmus Hojlund.

Man United expected line-up

Onana – Mazraoui, Lindelof, Yoro – Dalot, Fernandes, Ugarte, Dorgu – Eriksen, Garnacho – Zirkzee

United “seriously considering” pushing star out of club as he is “losing trust” of coaches – report

Manchester United are reportedly considering replacing Andre Onana, having earmarked three potential candidates.

Onana entered the clash against Olympique Lyonnais under the spotlight on the back of his comments that were not received well by Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic.

This was his chance to show he deserves to remain between the sticks for United, but the Cameroonian delivered a disastrous performance, committing two howlers leading to goals in the 2-2 draw.

For the hosts’ first goal, Onana misjudged the direction of Thiago Almada’s free-kick and let the ball straight past him. Then deep in added time, he failed to control Corentin Tolisso’s shot, leading to an easy tap-in for Rayan Cherki on the rebound.

Since the start of the last season, the ex-Inter Milan star has made eight errors leading to goals in all competitions, the most of any keeper playing for a Premier League club.

According to GIVEMESPORT, the Lyon horror show was the last straw, as United are “seriously considering” a move to sign a new number one following the disappointing outing in France.

It is claimed Onana “has been losing the trust of coaches at Carrington in recent months after a series of underwhelming performances, and now there is serious consideration at the club to signing a replacement this summer.”

Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, Burnley sensation James Trafford, and Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens are all understood to be on United’s short-list of options.

Chevalier, 23, is the most experienced shot-stopper on the list, having proven his mettle in France and Europe with Lille. However, it is suggested that the Ligue 1 outfit are likely to slap a high price tag on him.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils face competition from Newcastle United for Trafford, who has kept 28 clean sheets in 40 Championship appearances.

Lammens, known for his incredible reflexes, would likely be the cheapest option, with his contract at Antwerp due to expire in the summer of 2027.

The arrival of a new first-choice goalkeeper should spell the end for the 29-year-old at Old Trafford as he is very unlikely to be used as a cover option. It is claimed that United are “hopeful that an offer from a Saudi club might materialise” this summer.

United aiming to sign two elite Premier League forwards this summer, Amorim will be purring – The Athletic

Manchester United are reportedly keen on a summer deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha in addition to signing Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.

Scoring goals has been a big problem for United this season, with several of their forwards struggling to consistently come up with the goods in front of goal.

United are on course to score 45 Premier League goals this season, a pitiful tally that would be a club-record low. There is an urgent need to secure attacking reinforcements during the upcoming summer transfer window, hence the links to Cunha and Delap.

A report covered by The Peoples Person indicated that Delap is United’s primary striker target. While many expected the club to focus on signing just one forward, Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic has now revealed that United are aiming to bring in both Delap and Cunha, with the latter seen as an ideal option for one of the No. 10 roles.

Whitwell says, “Manchester United are considering a summer move for Matheus Cunha to supplement their aims of getting more goals in Ruben Amorim’s team. Liam Delap is high in thoughts at United to come in as striker, while Cunha is seen as potentially a good fit for one of the No 10 positions.”

“Signing both players is viewed as plausible if United are able to sell well, while other attacking options are being explored for both forward roles and plenty of talks on targets are anticipated.”

“Figures at United are acutely aware of the need to boost the potency of options available to Amorim.”

Cunha has notched an impressive 13 goals and provided an additional four assists in 26 Premier League appearances this term. Delap on the other hand, has notched 12 goals in 30 top-flight games.

It was recently pointed out that if Ipswich get relegated, Delap could be obtained for just £30m. Meanwhile, Cunha has a £62.5m release clause contained in the contract he signed with Wolves in January.

The Athletic note that while Wolves would ideally want this amount paid in full, there is likely to be some flexibility around instalments.

The newspaper further adds that decision-makers at Old Trafford see Cunha as a player already in his prime, capable of making an immediate impact upon arrival.

The Brazilian currently earns approximately £150,000 per week at Molineux and would likely demand a pay rise if he were to join United. However, the anticipated departures of players such as Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelöf, Jonny Evans, and Tom Heaton could help create some room on the wage bill.

One major advantage of signing Cunha is his suitability for Ruben Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 system. Wolves manager Vitor Pereira employs a similar setup, often deploying Cunha as a left-sided No. 10—a role in which the Brazilian has thrived, even amid the team’s broader challenges.

United are back in action on Sunday when they go away to St James’ Park to face Newcastle.

Man Utd news: Star’s price slashed by 33% with rivals Chelsea still lurking for summer deal

Manchester United have reportedly dropped their asking price for Alejandro Garnacho, aware that they won’t be able to sell him for his current figure.

United could see the back of some big players in the summer. It’s been regularly suggested that Casemiro could be sold, while Rasmus Hojlund has suitors amid a torrid time at Old Trafford, and some young stars are not immune to being canned.

Kobbie Mainoo and Garnacho have both been the subject of reports of potential sales. The latter was of interest to Napoli and Chelsea in January, but neither wanted to pay the £60million United were asking for.

Now, Italian outlet Il Mattino suggests the Red Devils have taken note of that, the report stating they’ve accepted they can’t sell Garnacho for that price, and have dropped his value to £40million.

That’s a 33 per cent reduction on what they were asking for less than six months ago, and they could potentially encourage a transfer as a result.

Indeed, it’s believed that Napoli and Chelsea remain interested in the winger, despite not being able to get him in January.

It seems United boss Ruben Amorim is not entirely enamoured with Garnacho, potentially suggesting he’d be open to selling him.

He suggested of late that “something is missing” with the forward, and that he and other attackers at the club are “not doing things with the quality they should do”.

Garnacho’s role in United’s system has prompted legend Rio Ferdinand to tell him to “go to Napoli”. That’s because he thinks Amorim’s formation does not suit him, and he’d be a better asset in a side which had proper winger spots.

Whether the winger is able to go to the Serie A side remains to be seen, with Chelsea seemingly likely to give them competition given they are still in the mix, and there’s a cheaper transfer in view.

Man Utd: Scholes accuses ‘disappointed’ Amorim of lying as pundit predicts his brutal verdict of squad

Paul Scholes has accused Ruben Amorim of lying and predicted the head coach’s honest verdict on Manchester United’s squad.

Amorim has struggled since replacing Erik ten Hag at Man Utd towards the end of last year.

Man Utds head coach has struggled to implement his preferred 3-4-3 formation, as they sit 13th in our Premier League calendar year table.

The Red Devils have also failed in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, so their focus is on the Europa League.

United drew 2-2 against Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday night.

Andre Onana was at fault for each of Lyon’s goals, but Amorim has defended the goalkeeper and suggested his side are progressing.

“What’s important is to focus on the next game,” Amorim said while also claiming his Man Utd are improving.

“When one player makes a mistake, all of the team makes a mistake so we continue like that.”

When asked whether he’d consider dropping Onana, Amorim replied: “No, we’ll continue to do the same thing in training, seeing the game and trying to choose the best eleven to win every match.”

Scholes does not think Amorim is being honest about his Man Utd squad, as he “always looks disappointed”.

“I don’t think he believes that, to be honest with you. I don’t think he likes his team, to be honest with you,” Scholes told TNT Sports.

“I think he knows he hasn’t got a great football team. I think he wants better, he needs better and I think you can see that with the way he is on the touchline.

“He always looks disappointed to me. The way he is speaking there tells me he is disappointed with what he’s got.

“He needs better, everyone knows he needs better if he is going to challenge and be where Manchester United want to be. I think it’s all over the pitch.

“I think he can be quite pleased defensively; I think they look’ve looked quite tight and solid recently. But that has taken away that real goal-threat that they should have.

“It isn’t quite there. I don’t think they have control in the middle of the pitch. I don’t think the forwards’ quality is there.

“He’s never going to say it but he doesn’t like this football team, that is something I take away from that. I might be wrong, I don’t know, but the impression I get is that this team is nowhere near the standard that he wants and he expects.

“It could take two or three years to get something a lot better, more enjoyable to watch, a lot more attacking, quality in every area of the football pitch.”

Amorim provides injury update ahead of Premier League clash with Newcastle

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says he is likely to rest players ahead of his side’s trip to St. James Park to face Newcastle United on Sunday.

The pre-match press conference was held immediately following the Europa League tie against Lyon, with Amorim’s comments embargoed until now.

Asked to comment on the character Joshua Zirkzee has shown to recover from the previous encounter against Newcastle that saw him substituted after 33 minutes, Amorim replied:

“Yes, he is doing a great job but also a very important thing was the way the fans reacted after that incident.

“So if you see every time, if he’s not playing, if he gets on the pitch or just warming up, the fans sing the Josh song, so that is massive for the player.

“So it’s 50:50, on the part of the fans and on the part of Josh.”

Asked what he did himself to help Zirkzee, he said:

“The same thing, I explained the situation, because as a former player I want to hear some explanation sometimes from the coaches so I’m really open on that. I just want to help the team and then work with him, work with him as he’s improving and then put him in the team to play. That’s the best way to show confidence in him.”

The next question was whether he would rotate in the Premier League to save players for the Europa League.

“But there is a great responsibility and we don’t have a big squad of players to do that”, Amorim replied.

“But we have some players who I know cannot make 90 minutes at the moment so we have to be careful. So we will try to address all these subjects in the game against Newcastle.

“But we have a great responsibility when we play any game, but we will look at that for sure.”

Asked if there would be any players returning to the squad from injury, he said “No, I think it’s the same squad.”

He was then asked again about rotating, specifically with regard to the Magpies, given the form they are in.

“Sometimes the best way to prepare is to win and we have to be careful with some players, but we have to be competitive,” Amorim said. “But when you play for Manchester United you can’t go into a game thinking about the next one.

“So we are going to face this one and then we’ll have three days, we won’t have a lot of time to run and train, it’s just recovering, but we have to face Newcastle in the way we can win the game.”

He was then asked what he thinks the strengths are of Sunday’s opponents.

“Everything,” he responded. “They have top players, really good on set pieces, phsyciality, the way they run and recover when they are under pressure. They have played together for a while. They won a title that was really emotional for everybody, you could see it during that week.

“But we have to think about our team, the way we want to play this kind of game and we’re being more consistent in the way we try to play games, so we’ll try to do that on Sunday.”

Bruno Fernandes was the next topic, with Amorim being asked if he would consider resting the skipper on Sunday.

“It’s an evaluation we’ll make with all the staff, with all the data that we have. Because we know already the players, we’ll try to protect those who find it harder to play a lot of games.

“But Bruno Fernandes is playing all the time and is playing better all the time. Sometimes this kind of player has to play in every match. But we’ll address that in these days we have to prepare.”

United make ruthless decision on Ten Hag favourite with €45m monster lined up as a replacement – report

Manchester United have ramped up their interest in long-term target Zion Suzuki with the club targeting a new goalkeeper this summer as Andre Onana’s woeful form continues to haunt Ruben Amorim’s side.

Onana, 29, was almost single-handedly responsible for the Red Devils crashing out of Europe last season, finishing bottom of their Champions League group after a series of high-profile mistakes by the Cameroonian international.

Onerous Onana

Last night, Onana did his best to repeat the trick in the Europa League with United facing off against Olympique Lyonnais in the first-leg of the quarter-final of the Europa League.

The competition represents last opportunity to salvage success in an otherwise abysmal season at Old Trafford with the Reds currently languished in 13th place in the Premier League table.

Victory in the final in Bilbao in May would add another trophy to United’s glittering cabinet but, more crucially, it would also provide first-seed qualification into next season’s Champions League.

And with the club seeking a drastic overhaul of the first-team squad, the increased revenue of Europe’s elite competition, as well as the allure it holds for potential recruits, would prove invaluable in the transfer window this summer.

Beating Lyon at the Groupama Stadium last night was step one of this plan; a plan which 10 out of the 11 players Amorim selected were happy to follow, though Rasmus Hojlund’s performance was more of a help to the Ligue 1 side than his own.

The one odd man out was Onana, who produced an abysmal display in France to gift Lyon two goals. The second was a last-gasp equaliser just minutes after Joshua Zirkzee had come on to score what should have constituted a late winner, giving the Reds a lead to take back to Manchester next week.

Instead, the Cameroonian parried a shot straight back into the path of French international Rayan Cherki who salvaged a draw for his side, meaning the second leg will start on level proceedings at Old Trafford.

United were not particularly good last night. But they certainly produced a decent enough performance to have defeated a rather average Lyon side, if not for the double agent inhabiting their box.

And it appears Amorim, and the club’s executive branch, are at their wits ends with Onana, who has produced the most mistakes (9) leading to goals amongst Premier League teams in all competitions since arriving in England two years ago.

Save Us Suzuki

TalkSPORT reveals United have “stepped up their scouting” of Suzuki with the club intent on bringing in a new goalkeeper this summer.

The Red Devils had previously come close to signing the 22-year-old Japanese international two years ago but he rejected their advances in favour of more first-team opportunities.

Suzuki joined Parma for £6.5 million last summer after spending the previous season on loan at Belgian Pro League side Sint-Truiden. And the shot stopper’s impressive performances for the Italian side has seen him emerge as one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A this season.

Parma are believed to value Suzuki at the £40 million mark meaning any pursuit by United this summer will be a costly one, worth many times more than the price they could have agreed two years ago.

But when your current goalkeeper, who cost an even greater fee, is so consistent in his inconsistency, so reliably unreliable, and such an asset to the opposition team, it’s a price worth paying for United.

Could Bruno be rested at Newcastle?

Bruno Fernandes

Friday 11 April 2025 13:31

Bruno Fernandes hasn’t missed a minute for Manchester United since he sat out of Newcastle United’s visit to Old Trafford through suspension in December.

Now, as we prepare for the reverse fixture with the Tynesiders, Ruben Amorim has been asked about the possibility of rotating his side and potentially giving his captain a rest.

Bruno’s ability to keep going through even the busiest of schedules is legendary and the Portugal international hasn’t let the workload get to him in recent weeks.

The Premier League’s reigning Player of the Month scored six goals in March and was again key in Thursday’s 2-2 draw in Lyon, playing an important role in goals for Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee.

The second leg with the Ligue Un outfit will be our biggest game of the season so far, and Amorim has a choice to make regarding his XI on Sunday, as the St James’s Park clash against a physical Newcastle side is likely to take plenty out of the players.

Amorim conceded that, although he would have to consult the data in regards to a few members of his squad, some – including Bruno – thrive off always being involved.

“It’s an evaluation,” Ruben said of the situation with Bruno.

“We’ll make this evaluation with all the staff, with all the data that we have, and then because we know already the players, we will try to protect the ones that it will be hard to make a lot of games.

“But Bruno Fernandes is playing all the time and he’s playing better all the time. Sometimes, this kind of player has to play in every match.

“But we will address that in these days that we have to prepare.”

Fernandes has been involved for 4,078 of a possible 4,470 minutes this season – not including added time – and is, once again, a strong candidate to claim the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award.

He’s our leading scorer across all competitions, with 16 goals, and the 30-year-old has also laid on 18 assists for team-mates.

“Sometimes, winning games is the best way of preparing the next one,” Amorim continued, in regards to his selection in the north east.

“Of course, I’m going to be careful with some players, but we need to be competitive. When you are playing for Manchester United, you cannot go to the game thinking about the next one.

“So we are going to face this one. We have three days and we are going to prepare the game in the way without a lot of running, a lot of training.

“It’s just recovering. And then we will be fine on Thursday, with our fans. But we need to face Newcastle in a way that we can win the game.”

Ruben Amorim expects to take a similar squad to Newcastle United as the one he had for the Europa League draw in Lyon.

The Manchester United head coach was asked about the prospect of rotating his players, with the all-important second leg against the French side to come at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

However, Amorim was clear that there is still a responsibility to get results in the Premier League, with the Reds sitting in 13th spot in the table, and four points behind the team above us in Brentford.

When quizzed on whether any of the absentees could return on Tyneside, the boss said: “No, I think it’s the same.

“There’s a great responsibility. We don’t have a team that is really big to do that [rotate], and then we have some players that I know that cannot make 90 minutes in this moment still.

“We have be careful, so we will try to address all these subjects in the game against Newcastle. But we have a great responsibility when we play any game, so I will try to look at that. That is for sure. But we have to face Newcastle with a team that we can be competitive, and to win the game.”

Young striker Chido Obi is available again after being ineligible in Europe, while Kobbie Mainoo made his first appearance since February, when coming off the bench to good effect in France.

Mason Mount was also introduced in the second half and could be pressing for a first start since the Manchester derby in December. Luke Shaw must be close to seeing some action after twice being an unused substitute.

Ayden Heaven is bidding to regain full fitness, as are Amad and Jonny Evans, but Matthijs de Ligt and Toby Collyer have been added to the list of absentees recently. Lisandro Martinez is out for the season.

NEWCASTLE’S TEAM NEWS

Magpies manager Eddie Howe has been ill and his press conference duties were conducted by his assistant Jason Tindall. However, he is expected to be well enough to be in the dugout on Sunday.

Tindall revealed a boost for the hosts regarding Anthony Gordon, with the winger, who scored home and away against the Reds last season, back in training and pushing for a place in the matchday squad. The England international suffered a hip problem during the recent international break.

“He’s had a decent week with the physios,” said Tindall. “He was back out on grass for a session yesterday, so we’ll assess him today to see how he’s responded to that, then we’ll have to make a late call on whether he’s available for Sunday.”

Joe Willock does look set to miss out, though, along with Sven Botman, Lewis Hall and Jamaal Lascelles.

Ruben explains secret behind Zirkzee turnaround

ManUtd.com reporter Adam Marshall at Old Trafford.

Friday 11 April 2025 13:30

Ruben Amorim believes the Manchester United fans have played a big part in Joshua Zirkzee’s emergence as a key figure at this crucial stage of the season.

The Dutchman came off the bench to score in a second successive away match in the knockout stages of the Europa League, our last chance of glory this term, and helped secure a 2-2 draw at Lyon.

Our summer arrival from Bologna has had his ups and downs, including scoring and missing the vital penalty kicks in Emirates FA Cup shootouts and suffering a negative reaction when being substituted in the reverse fixture with Sunday’s opponents, Newcastle United.

It is to his great credit that he bounced back from that low against the Magpies and, during his press conference to preview the St James’ Park encounter, Amorim outlined why the resurgence is down to a combination of the player’s efforts and the backing of the supporters ever since that 2-0 home defeat at the end of 2024.

Here is what our head coach had to say to the media, during his briefing in advance of the 16:30 BST kick-off…

Obviously Josh had a tough time against Newcastle last time out in December. You brought him off on 33 minutes, I believe. That was a really hard moment for him. Since then he’s come back, he’s scored some big goals, the penalty in the Arsenal shootout. Obviously he’s shown great character to come back from that…
“Yes, he’s doing a great job. Also a very important thing was the way the fans react after that incident. So if you see, every time, even if Josh is not playing, every time he gets on the pitch or just warming up, our fans sing the Josh song. So that is massive for the player, so it’s 50-50. Fifty per cent part of the fans and 50 per cent of Josh.”

What did you say to help him back?
“The same thing. I explained the situation because, as a former player, I wanted to hear some explanation sometimes from the coaches and I am really open that. I just want to help the team and then work with him. With all the work that all the staff is doing with him he’s improving, and then I put him to play. This is the only way to show confidence to the player.”

When the club got to the last stages of the Europa League under Jose Mourinho, he started to rotate heavily in the last Premier League games, because there wasn’t a lot to play for. Are you likely to do that similarly now, when these Europa League games become more critical?
“But there’s a great responsibility. We don’t have a team that is really big to do that, and then we have some players that I know that cannot make 90 minutes in this moment still. We have be careful, so we will try to address all these subjects in the game against Newcastle. But we have a great responsibility when we play any game, so I will try to look at that. That is for sure. But we have to face Newcastle with a team that we can be competitive, and to win the game.”

Will you have roughly the same squad for that game on Sunday, or will some players come back?
“No, I think it’s the same.”

What do you make of Newcastle at the moment? You indicated before the derby that you might rotate. Are you going to have to prioritise next Thursday?
“Sometimes winning games is the best way of preparing the next one. Of course, I’m going to be careful with some players, but we need to be competitive. When you are playing for Manchester United you cannot go to the game thinking about the next one. So we are going to face this one. We have three days and we are going to prepare the game in the way without a lot of running, a lot of training. It’s just recovering. And then we will be fine on Thursday with our fans. But we need to face Newcastle in a way that we can win the game.”

What do you make of Newcastle and the threats that they pose, in particular?
“Everything. They have top players, really good on set-pieces, the physicality, the way they run in recovery when they are beaten in the first pressure. So they are a team that play together for a while. They won a title, that was really emotional for everybody – you can see it with that week. But again, we have to think in our team [about] the way we want to play these kinds of games, and we are being consistent in the way we play the games. So we’ll try to do the same on Sunday.”

On Bruno Fernandes, he’s played almost every minute this season. I think he’s played the last 20 matches. Does it come to a point where you’ve got to look at the Europa League next week? Does it come to a point where you take him out of the Newcastle game?
“It’s an evaluation. We’ll make this evaluation with all the staff, with all the data that we have, and then because we know already the players, we will try to protect the ones that it will be hard to make a lot of games. But Bruno Fernandes is playing all the time and he’s playing better all the time. Sometimes this kind of player has to play in every match. But we will address that in these days that we have to prepare.”
