Man Utd: Henry blasts ‘not acceptable’ Red Devils star for doing something he’s ‘never seen before’

Thierry Henry slammed Leny Yoro for his part in Harvey Barnes’ second goal in Newcastle’s 4-1 win over Manchester United and Jamie Carragher is “running out of things to say about them”.

Ruben Amorim lost his tenth Premier League game in charge of United at St James’ Park as his side were dismantled in the second half.

Barnes scored a brace, the second of which left both Henry and Carragher flabbergasted as they analysed it on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

Barnes forced Noussair Mazraoui into a mistake mid-way into United’s half to claim the ball before breezing past both Yoro and Victor Lindelof to smash the ball past Altay Bayindir.

Yoro immediately looked over at the linesman despite there being no hint of a foul or offside in the build-up and Henry couldn’t believe what he was seeing from the young Frenchman.

Henry said: “Leny Yoro doesn’t go back to try and defend. The desire was on Newcastle’s side. They’re just not good enough.

“That (Barnes goal) should never happen. Pause on Yoro. I don’t know why… I don’t know what he is looking at? Are you looking at the linesman, trying to see if he is going to bail you out, I don’t know?

“I don’t know if he thought there was an offside. We all know it’s a goal. What are you looking at? I actually don’t know. I’ve never seen that before.”

Jamie Carragher claimed it was “not acceptable” for Leny Yoro and fellow centre-back Victor Lindelof to fail to challenge Barnes as he eased through to score Newcastle’s third of the game.

“How bad are Manchester United? They lack everything, Manchester United,” he said.

“Harvey Barnes’ first touch, you’ve got two defenders before he gets to the goal and two defenders chasing him.

“If I tell you now he picks the ball up and he is going to score here and not be challenged, you can’t think that is possible at any level of football, if it was under-five young kids or Premier League. That is not acceptable to start in that position (where Barnes began) and finish there (in the box) without a challenge.

“We’re running out of things to say about them.”

But Carragher doesn’t think Amorim is in danger of losing his job at Old Trafford, with the owners and players more to blame for their strife.

“I think Amorim is probably at the end of that queue if you like,” he said on Sky Sports when asked who is to blame for United’s problems. “You’d have to look at the ownership and the players there. He’s going into a really difficult situation.

“We have to remember he didn’t want to take the job right away. He wanted to come in the summer. In a preseason, but the results that he’s got they’re still not good enough.

“We know for Man United, we’re not expecting them to win every week, we know they’re not a top team, but they shouldn’t be where they are in the league table, even with the players that they’ve got.

“It took a bit of time, obviously, for the system. People are still yet to be convinced by that, is that the right decision?

“Not actually from him, by the club for employing him because he came with that system, that’s his DNA. People keep saying, ‘oh, he’s got to change the system.’

“I don’t really see it like that because his whole managerial career and the success that he’s had has been based on that system, that’s what he knows. If he goes to something else, they might as well change the manager.”

Man Utd: Ratcliffe rejects transfer approach for current exile, with hopes clear amid risky call

Manchester United have reportedly rejected an approach from Real Betis for Antony, where he is currently on loan, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe is holding out for another deal.

United let some of their struggling players join other clubs in January. With Jadon Sancho already out on loan from the summer, he was joined in exile by Antony, Marcus Rashford and Tyrell Malacia.

The former is having a good time of it away from Old Trafford, with Real Betis, where he has four goals and four assists in 15 games.

His loan deal is only valid until the summer, and Betis have no clause to make that permanent. They do want to extend Antony’s stay at the club, though.

The Mirror reports that they have ‘had an offer’ to extend Antony’s deal by another 12 months ‘rebuffed’ by United. It’s also stated that if they reach the Champions League, they ‘may have the funds to make his move permanent’.

Betis are currently nine points from the final Champions League spot in La Liga.

It seems United are holding out for a fee for Antony, rather than allowing him to head out on another short-term deal. Indeed, the report suggests they want to make £30million from his sale.

But it seems a risk for them to reject Betis’ loan approach, knowing if Antony does continue to star there, it’s more likely that they’ll want to sign him permanently.

If he’s not allowed to head out on loan again, he could become stranded at United, as other clubs might not be willing to take a risk on the £30million transfer.

The winger has only had a couple of months in form, so it’s not guaranteed that he’ll continue that down the line. Whether Betis or any other club will choose to take a punt on him is currently unclear.

But the Red Devils are clearly confident in that happening, so will hope Antony’s form continues so that they can make their desired amount, from Betis or any other club.

United looking at summer swoop for 6ft 3in colossus termed “one of Ligue 1’s best” – report

Ruben Amorim is in a conundrum regarding his goalkeeping pick for Manchester United ahead of their season-defining Europa League quarter-final second leg tie against

Andre Onana was to blame as the Red Devils returned from France with only a draw to show for their efforts as the Cameroonian was culpable for both goals conceded on the night.

The head coach decided to take his No 1 out of the firing line for the club’s Premier League game against Newcastle, opting to hand Altay Bayindir his first Premier League start.

But the Turk did not cover himself in glory, committing an error while trying to pass out from the back which allowed the Magpies to score their fourth goal.

Goalkeeping issue

With third-choice Tom Heaton either expected to leave the club or join the coaching ranks, Amorim desperately needs reinforcements in goal.

He wants Onana out with INEOS even open to offering a discount as interest from Saudi Pro League sides mount while the Turkiye international is open to returning back home.

Yahia Fofana is further proof that teams should recruit from 2nd tiers more often. Since Angers got promoted he’s carried on being a top GK – one of Ligue 1’s best.

The latest keeper to be linked with a move to Old Trafford is Angers shot-stopper Yahia Fofana. He is single-handedly responsible for keeping Angers away from the Ligue 1 drop zone.

The 24-year-old has helped keep six clean-sheets this season. His strengths include being confident enough to claim crosses, while he is an athletic shot stopper with a good range of passing and has been termed as “one of Ligue 1’s best”.

The Red Devils have sent scouts to watch the Ivory Coast international in action as per TBR Football while Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Chelsea are also interested with Didier Drogba a fan of his compatriot.

Fofana interest

“TBR Football understands that Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahia Fofana is attracting the attention of a host of clubs following his impressive campaign with Angers.

“Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are among the clubs who are keen on the Ivorian international amid question marks over the future of their number one goalkeepers.

“Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham were all represented at Angers’ impressive 2-0 weekend win over Montpellier, sources have said.”

Whether United follow up their interest with a concrete bid remains to be seen. The 6ft 3in colossus has a market value of only €6 million while his contract is valid until 2026.

“Number one priority”: United legend demands INEOS solve Amorim’s biggest issue with blockbuster transfer – exclusive

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown believes a new forward is the “number one priority” in the summer transfer window as the Red Devils have “always had a successful striker” at the heart of their team.

Defeat at the hands of Newcastle yesterday means Ruben Amorim’s side are statistically the worst United side in Premier League history. And with only 38 goals in 32 games, the Reds also look set to obliterate the record – 49 goals in the 2015/16 season – for fewest goals in a campaign.

The Need for Goals

It’s evident, therefore, why Old Trafford executives are targeting urgent upgrades in the forward line this summer with the club strongly linked with moves for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matheus Cunha.

And Brown, speaking in an exclusive interview with The Peoples Person,  courtesy of AOS, believes this is the right approach by the club, although the 45-year-old stresses the need for “experience” in a new striker.

“The number nine spot is the one – the number one priority,” Brown reveals when asked about United’s plans this summer, but offers support to under-fire striker Rasmus Hojlund, who has drawn fierce criticism from fans this season.

Brown states he “loves” Hojlund but acknowledges the 22-year-old Dane has not scored enough this season, despite a promising debut campaign last year. And the former defender believes a new striker in the summer would help Hojlund, rather than hinder him.

“If you look at the player’s [United] had over the years, we’ve always had a successful striker. I don’t think we’ve ever relied on just a young striker, with the exception of Wayne Rooney, who can come in at 18, 19, or 20, and just be top-class.

“I think [Hojlund] needs someone there to help him. He definitely needs someone experienced next to him up there, who’s full of confidence.

“We as fans like Rasmus but ultimately we need to win games and we don’t score. It puts a lot of pressure on him at such a young age.

Brown describes fellow striker Joshua Zirkzee as a “bit different” to Hojlund – “I think you can see that when they both play” – which leads the 23-year-old Dutch international to offering his best work on the pitch away from the opposition box, rather than helping to share the goal-scoring burden with his Danish teammate.

A Young Van Nistelrooy?

United appear to have settled on Delap, 22, as the club’s primary target up front, given the financial difficulties involved in a pursuit of the more established options on the market – Victor Osimhen or Viktor Gyokeres.

Osimhen, 26, is currently on loan at Galatasaray but will be available this summer when he returns to Napoli with a release clause in the region of £60 million. The Nigerian international’s wage demands are likely to rule out a move to Old Trafford, however, despite the striker representing the perfect level of “experience” Brown believes United need.

Similarly, Sporting CP marksman Gyokeres, who Amorim knows and rates highly given their shared time in Lisbon, looks set to join a side guaranteed of Champions League football next season and will command a price in excess of £60 million with a salary to match.

Delap, by comparison, is on relatively low wages at Portman Road but has scored 12 goals for the newly promoted side, despite their struggles. He is attracting attention right across the Premier League given his contract contains a £30 million release clause should the Tractor Boys be relegated – an inevitability at this point.

However, Delap’s relative inexperience, with only one season (albeit an impressive one) in a top division, could see the same issue which has plagued Hojlund rear its ugly ahead again, hence why Brown stresses the need for an established striker, rather than another ‘young’ project.

The most experienced forward on the books at Old Trafford is one currently on loan at Aston Villa, Marcus Rashford. And Brown states “you never what will happen in the summer” when asked about the prospect of the 27-year-old returning to his boyhood club.

However, the former defender believes Rashford has “had a lot of joy at Aston Villa and you can’t necessarily see him coming back and doing the same [at United],” suggesting a permanent exit may be the best option for both parties.

But it’s evident the desperate need for a reliable goal-scorer at Old Trafford next season for United. And Brown highlights the importance of one by choosing Ruud van Nistelrooy as the one player he would take from his former teammates to place them in Amorim’s squad and improve the Portuguese coach’s starting XI the most.

You cannot put a price on goals; and, in today’s market, a striker like Van Nistelrooy would almost be priceless.

Chelsea’s mammoth spend on agent fees revealed as Premier League teams ranked

Chelsea are enduring a rotten run in the Premier League but they’ve claimed the title that matters, with no top flight club spending as much as them on agent fees for the second season on the bounce. Carefree, wherever we may be…

The Football Association released the figures on Monday which showed the Premier League teams spent a combined £409.1m on fees, down from £409.5m in the previous period.

The data covers a period between 2 February 2024 and 3 February 2025, encompassing the summer and winter windows this season, and shows Chelsea spent a little over £60m for agents to facilitate transfers for the men’s team.

That’s more than they spent on one single player, with Pedro Neto their most expensive flop at £54m, while a further 11 flops arrived in permanent deals, along with loan flop Jadon Sancho, whose move from Manchester United looks set to become permanent at the end of the season.

READ MORE: Premier League winners and losers: Pereira, Spurs, Newcastle, Manchester United, Moyes…

Neto, Sancho and free transfer Tosin Adarabioyo are the only three of the 13 players to have played regular football under Enzo Maresca this season, while Joao Felix – the second most expensive signing of the summer – is now failing on loan at AC Milan.

The Blues spent the most of any Premier League side, although that figure is down on their 2023/2024 outlay of £75.1m.

Manchester City again spent the second most on agents – just over £52m – followed by Manchester United with a £33m spend.

Aston Villa (£25m) and Newcastle (£24.3m) complete the top five biggest spenders, with Arsenal (£22.8m) and Premier League champions-elect Liverpool (£20.8m) following behind.

West Ham (£19m), Tottenham (£18.4m) and Brighton (£16.5m) make up the rest of the top ten, while Ipswich prop up the table having paid just £6.2 on agents despite spending the seventh-most this season (£130m).

Chelsea were also comfortably the highest spenders on agents in the Women’s Super League, with the champions paying £622,604 to intermediaries.

That’s nearly triple the amount of the second-highest spenders, Manchester City – £288,628 – with the 12 WSL clubs paying a combined £2.1m to agents.

This means Sonia Bompastor’s Chelsea were responsible for 28.6% of the division’s spending.

Premier League agent fee table in full:

1. Chelsea – £60.3m
2. Manchester City – £52.1m
3. Manchester United -£33m
4. Aston Villa – £25.1m
5. Newcastle – £24.4m
6. Arsenal – £22.8m
7. Liverpool – £20.8m
8. West Ham United – £19m
9. Tottenham Hotspur – £18.4m
10. Brighton – £16.6m
11. Bournemouth – £16.4m
12. Brentford – £14.8m
13. Wolves – £13.5m
14. Nottingham Forest – £13m
15. Fulham – £12.8m
16. Crystal Palace – £12m
17. Leicester – £9.8m
18. Everton – £9.2m
19. Southampton – £8.9m
20. Ipswich Town – £6.3m

Man Utd: Ben Foster calms for ‘calmness under pressure’ from ‘too stressed’ Andre Onana

The Andre Onana pile on continued on Monday as Ben Foster became the latest ex-Man Utd player to weigh in on the fallen Reds keeper, observing, “he seems to be a little bit too stressed for me.”

News broke early on Sunday that Ruben Amorin had decided to drop United’s number one for the trip to Newcastle, instead starting backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.

It soon became apparent why Amorim had been so reluctant to do so, as Bayindir conceded from four of six shots on target and committed a major error in the build-up to Newcastle’s fourth goal during a less than convincing Premier League debut.

The former Man Utd and England goalkeeper was able to sympathise with Onana as he shared his thoughts with talkSPORT.

“You can’t recover that quickly. It’s a horrible place to be, and I’ve been in it so many times throughout my career.

“You’re struggling mentally, and the only thing you can think of is, ‘Don’t make a mistake.’ And it’s the worst way to go into games.

“If you can go into games with big confidence, positivity, knowing that you’re going to help your team out, then you’re on a great setting to start the game.

“But when you’re thinking negatively and pessimistically, it’s a really bad place to be, but I think Onana has been a little bit like that all season, really.

United boss Amorim decided to remove Onana from the firing line entirely at the weekend, leaving him in Manchester as Tom Heaton took his place on the bench.

The Cameroonian is officially credited with three major errors leading to goals in the Premier League alone this season, though that’s a stat which only considers glaringly obvious mistakes, often failing to take into account factors such as poor positioning, soft saves, and spilled shots.

Foster expanded on what he feels Onana’s biggest problem is.

“I see some of the mistakes that he’s made and some of the saves that he makes, he seems to me like he’s a little bit stressed when it comes to the big moments.

“Whether it’s the big moment of making a save, whether it’s a block or a parry, instead of being really sort of gentle and calm under pressure, he seems to be a little bit too stressed for me.

“So he’s getting real blocky surfaces on things and everything seems to be popping out into that six-yard box, where you look at some of the top goalkeepers in the world and straightaway you think of someone like Emi Martinez or Alisson, or Thibaut Courtois.

“Them goalkeepers, when it comes to the real, big moments, it’s that calmness under pressure, it’s about being focussed but relaxed at the same time, and Onana just doesn’t seem to be able to do that.”

Picture: “We need you all…”: United ace delivers emotional plea to United fans ahead of season-defining Europa League fixture

Manchester United succumbed to a disappointing 1-4 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United in their Premier League game at St James’ Park.

Keeping in mind Thursday’s season-defining Europa League fixture, Ruben Amorim decided to make a few bold changes and not all of them worked out.

Altay Bayindir, handed his first start in the English top-flight following Andre Onana’s horror show in France, was equally poor against the Magpies and was culpable for the fourth goal scored by the home side.

Christian Eriksen got a rare start and was run ragged by the hosts and it is no wonder that the club are not offering him a contract extension as he does not have the legs to play in the big games.

Garnacho goal

Up front Joshua Zirkzee got a chance to start in place of the woefully out-of-form Rasmus Hojlund and ended up picking up an injury which might mean the end of his season.

There was hardly anything positive to come out from the game but the head coach was pleased with Luke Shaw’s return from injury, Harry Amass’ performance on his first start for the club and the team performance in the first-half.

The visitors fell behind as Sandro Tonali got on the scoresheet but against the run of play, Alejandro Garnacho got his team right back in it with a calm finish from a brilliant counter-attack.

The Argentine has not been in the best of form recently which has seen him get linked with a summer exit with Napoli leading the race for his signature.

Message for the fans

But the 20-year-old is not allowing such talk to get the better of him and he is fully focussed on Thursday’s quarter-final second leg tie against Olympique Lyonnais.

Taking to Instagram, the Carrington graduate apologised to the fans for the team’s poor showing at Tyneside and urged them to get behind the team for Thursday’s game.

“It’s not enough. We know you all expect better from us, we’ll learn. We need you all at Old Trafford on Thursday. It’s a big day for all of us.”

With Zirkzee definitely out, Amorim will be expecting more from the Argentina international against the French side. Hopefully, he can take confidence from Sunday’s goal and deliver on the pitch in Europe.

Man Utd transfer: Red Devils target ex-Arsenal star as Onana replacement in battle with Leeds

Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is expected to leave the relegated club this summer, with reports suggesting that long-time rivals Manchester United and Leeds are among those interested in the former England goalkeeper.

Ramsdale, 26, moved to Southampton at the start of the season to enjoy an uptick in minutes after falling out of favour at Arsenal. He’s made 24 appearances for the Saints but has been unable to prevent a swift return to the Championship.

Despite the team’s struggles, his performances at St Mary’s have been good enough to attract the attention of Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel, who included him in a provisional 26-man squad for the game against Albania. He was later cut.

With another disappointing season drawing to an end, Ramsdale is reportedly keen to remain in the Premier League – and a move to Man Utd could be on the cards, according to The SunUnited aren’t the only side showing an interest, with West Ham, Championship side Leeds Utd, and several clubs abroad monitoring his situation.

The Sheffield United academy product is understood to prefer staying in England, making a move abroad unlikely.

The club’s goalkeeping situation has been a hot topic for two seasons now. After months of inconsistent form, Ruben Amorim decided to drop Andre Onana and give the gloves to Altay Bayindir on Sunday.

Bayindir’s poor performance against Newcastle has heaped further pressure on the club, who may now feel they need to sign at least one goalkeeper in the summer transfer window.

In the short term, all eyes will be on Amorim as he wrestles with whether to give Bayindir another chance in Thursday’s Europa League second leg, but longer term, it seems Ramsdale is seen as a potential solution.

News of their interest will be particularly unwelcome at Elland Road, where old foes Leeds United have shortlisted Ramsdale as a potential upgrade should they seal promotion.

The Championship side are currently five points clear of third-place Sheffield United in the race for promotion with a far superior goal difference – a margin fans feel would be greater if it wasn’t for the high-profile errors of goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Like Onana, Meslier has found himself out of the team recently, replaced by Welsh international Karl Darlow. Further comparisons can be drawn to Man Utd‘s situation, as the Frenchman’s poor performances, coupled with Daniel Farke’s reluctance to play Darlow, could mean Leeds are in the market for two keepers.

The Saints will be hoping to recoup all of the £25 million fee they paid for Ramsdale in 2024, though it remains to be seen if a relegation clause will allow him to leave in a cut-price deal.

With a potential transfer battle brewing off the pitch, Man Utd and Leeds are set to square off in a summer friendly in Stockholm in July – and, if Leeds seal promotion, they could renew rivalries in the Premier League next season.

United hit rock bottom as alarming new stats emerge after heavy defeat to Newcastle

Newly surfaced statistics have shed light on the extent of Manchester United’s struggles this season, highlighting the alarming nature of their performances.

This comes after United suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle on Sunday afternoon at St James’ Park.

The two sides entered the break on level terms after goals from Sandro Tonali and Alejandro Garnacho. However, United struggled to withstand the hosts’ relentless pressure in the second half, allowing the Magpies to pull away and secure all three points.

Harvey Barnes struck twice before Bruno Guimaraes completed the scoring courtesy of an Altay Bayindir mistake.

After the final whistle, Amorim blamed his players’ defensive lapses for the loss. The result saw the Red Devils drop down to 14th place in the Premier League table, one position below Everton on goal difference.

United’s latest hammering means that the club can no longer match their previous lowest-ever points tally of 58.

The situation is even worse than initially feared, with a set of new stats from the BBC underscoring the full extent of the Red Devils’ decline this term.

According to the news outlet, only Southampton (19) and Aston Villa (13) have made more errors leading to goals in the Premier League this season than United (12), who committed two against Newcastle.

United went a goal down in the 24th minute, meaning they have trailed in 19 Premier League games this season with only Leicester (27), Southampton (21) and Wolves (20) doing so more often. It’s also the joint-most games that United have conceded first in a single Premier League season alongside 2013/14, when David Moyes succeeded the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.

Additionally, since Ruben Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag in November last year, only Southampton (59), Tottenham (53) and Leicester (53) have shipped more goals in all competitions than United (48) among Premier League clubs.

Finally, United’s 14 league defeats this season is their joint highest tally in a single Premier League campaign, also losing 14 games last season. The 20-time English champions last suffered more defeats in a top-flight campaign in 1989/90 (16 in 38 games).

These numbers serve as a stark indictment of how bad things are at Old Trafford and underscore the significant work required to restore the club’s fortunes.

United’s to-flight campaign is a write-off at this point but luckily, there is a chance to make amends by winning the Europa League and as an added incentive, qualify for the Champions League.

Roy Keane tears into United star for lacking “common sense” after “basic” error in defeat to Newcastle

Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir came under criticism from club legend Roy Keane after making a costly mistake in Sunday’s defeat to Newcastle.

United fell to a heavy 4-1 loss at St James’ Park to drop down to 14th place in the Premier League table.

With Andre Onana dropped after his mistake-strewn display in the 2-2 Europa League quarter-final clash with Lyon, Bayindir received the nod to start between the sticks but he failed to grab the opportunity.

The Turkey international conceded four goals from six shots on target. He was at fault for Newcastle’s goal, as his chipped pass was intercepted by Joelinton before Bruno Guimaraes finished it off.

In his post-match press conference, Ruben Amorim declined to confirm whether he would continue with Bayindir for Thursday’s return leg against Lyon or opt to recall Onana.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane was far from impressed with Bayindir, accusing the shot-stopper of lacking “common sense.”

Keane said, “Of course (he was at fault). You go back to the decision-making. I’m not even sure what the big benefit (would be, making that pass). It’s too risky.”

“It’s absolutely too risky. There’s players around you. At the highest level, it’s about your decision making.”

The Irishman continued, “I’m quick to defend goalkeepers when they first come into the team because I think it does take five, six, seven games to get up to speed with the shot. But that basic mistake there, I can’t understand it.”

“This is big boy stuff. You’re up at Newcastle, Newcastle are flying, you do your own homework on who they’re playing and when they’re pressing you. If you’re going to go long, make sure you go too far, so then at least it’s up the pitch.”

“But if you lose it there, someone is through on goal on top of you. That’s just common sense.”

“I can’t understand it!”
