Why Man United duo were both forced to leave Old Trafford in triumphant comeback against Lyon

Manchester United defensive duo of Noussair Mazraoui and Victor Lindelof were forced to leave Old Trafford at half-time against Lyon due to urgent family issues.

It was a triumphant night for United, who staged one of the most dramatic comebacks in Europe to book their place in the semi-finals of the Europa League.

United were leading 2-0 by half-time but their advantage was erased as Lyon restored parity in the second half through Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico. These two strikes forced the game into extra time and despite being a man down, Lyon went ahead as Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette found the back of the net.

It looked like Ruben Amorim’s men were dead and buried but three late goals in extra time from Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire flipped the game on its head. United will face La Liga outfit Athletic Club in the last four.

Mazraoui started the match but was taken off during the interval. Lindelof – who was warming up at the break – was due to replace the Moroccan but the change never happened.

Luke Shaw came on for Mazraoui instead, with Lindelof heading down the tunnel.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Mazraoui and Lindelof had to leave the stadium to “address urgent family issues.”

MEN note that the two matters are “entirely independent of each other” and both players are fine.

In his presser ahead of United’s Premier League meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, Amorim confirmed as much, adding that everything is now well.

The Portuguese coach told reporters, “He (Lindelof)’s available. He has personal issues, like Nous, so we had to let him go but everything is okay now. I know that football is really important but there are things that are more important and then they will be ready to face the next game.”

“Both (issues arose) during the game and sometimes you don’t control these things. Everything happened this season! But everything is okay now.”

United vs. Wolves kicks off at 14:00 BST.

Friday 18 April 2025 16:00

A new date has been given to Manchester United’s upcoming Premier League game at home to West Ham, which is due to be played next month.

The Old Trafford clash with Graham Potter’s Hammers was initially scheduled to be a 15:00 BST kick-off on Saturday 10 May, but has now been moved back as a result of our progression to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals.

It will now get under way just under 24 hours later, at 14:15 BST on Sunday 11 May. Tickets are available to buy here.

120 IN 20 | These extended highlights of United v Lyon are quite simply a must-watch…

The alteration is a necessary one after United beat Lyon 7-6 on aggregate in our Europa League quarter-final tie, which culminated with that thrilling 5-4 victory in the second leg on Thursday night.

As a result, Ruben Amorim’s Reds will now face Spanish side Athletic Club at the last-four stage, with the second leg in M16 set to be played in the midweek before the West Ham match, on Thursday 8 May.

It means the latter has been pushed back to the Sunday, giving us an extra day to prepare for what will be our penultimate Old Trafford outing of the 2024/25 campaign.

No rearrangement has been made to the Premier League game that follows our European semi-final first leg in Bilbao on 1 May, as the trip to Brentford is already due to be contested three days after, on Sunday 4 May.

U18s: United 4 Derby 3

Friday 18 April 2025 15:47

Manchester United’s Under-18s continued the week’s run of stunning comeback victories with a late triumph at home over Derby County.

The young Reds are hot on the tails of rivals Manchester City in pursuit of a second successive U18 Premier League North title.

Adam Lawrence’s side trailed by two goals at one point, but got one back before half-time through Bendito Mantato. We then put in a fine second-half performance, with James Scanlon and Shea Lacey’s goals taking United ahead, before another from Victor Musa was required when Derby had levelled themselves.

United are next in action at Everton’s Finch Farm Training Ground on Saturday 26 April (11:00 BST).

Tributes were paid pre-match to Academy alumnus Joe Thompson, who sadly died at the age of 36 on Thursday. Our thoughts remain with his wife, Chantelle, and his two daughters.

ANOTHER THRILLER | Our U18s shared seven goals with Derby on Friday, in a match that echoed the win over Lyon…

United could have taken an early lead when Biancheri headed over from Amir Ibragimov’s right-wing cross, but instead it was the visitors to break the deadlock. Derby capitalised on a loose pass to counter-attack, with left-winger Cruz Allen finish ruthlessly past Will Murdock.

Allen nearly followed his first up with a second, but this time Murdock tipped his powerful left-footed effort over the crossbar.

A second headed chance for Biancheri passed United by after a nice cross from captain Jacob Devaney, a midfielder starting at right-back.

Excellent wing play from Mantato created a half-chance for Ibragimov, but Derby were alert to it and prevented space to shoot, causing a half-hit effort to be saved. Shortly after, Mantato had his own effort blocked, and Biancheri’s follow-up met the same fate.

Murdock came up big once more, denying Charles Ebuka when one-on-one. But it wouldn’t be long until the in-form Ebuka found his goal. Murdock punched away a right-wing free-kick but United failed to clear, with Ebuka pouncing to lash it home.

United responded well. After good work from left-back Plunkett, the Reds played inside through Scanlon, then Ibragimov, then Biancheri until he finally teed Mantato up to finish clinically.

Our U18s’ tribute to Joe Thompson Video

Our U18s’ tribute to Joe Thompson

The life of much-loved Academy graduate Joe Thompson was celebrated before our Under-18s kicked off against Derby…

A fast start to the second half should have drawn greater reward for United, with Scanlon having a good shot saved, Dan Armer heading wide of the left post and substitute Jim Thwaites’s free-kick also squeezing wide.

Instead, it took until 72 minutes in for Scanlon to level the game, finishing well after fantastic wing-play from another sub, Lacey, on the right flank.

His fine contribution continued four minutes later with an excellent goal of his own. With several shots blocked around the edge of the box, Lacey showed good feet to find space on his weaker right foot and then strike into the bottom left corner.

It seemed likely to be the winner, but Derby found extra reserves of energy. Devaney put in a last-ditch challenge to prevent Allen netting on the counter-attack, but County couldn’t be supressed and levelled through Tristan Gill’s header shortly after.

United, then, had to find something more and did so in the second minute of injury time. Once again, Lacey was at the heart, playing a neat ball through to Tyler Fletcher inside the box. His run was well-timed, and his pull-back well-weighted. Musa finished well.

MATCH DETAILS

United: Murdock; Devaney (c), Munro, Armer, Plunkett (Lacey 67); T. Fletcher, Ibragimov (Lusale 67), Baumann (Thwaites 61); Mantato, Biancheri (Musa 61), Scanlon (Mills 93).

Unused subs: None.

Goals: Mantato 37, Scanlon 72, Lacey 76, Musa 90+2 | Allen 9, Agbawodikeizu 33, Gill 82.

Team news for United v Wolves

Friday 18 April 2025 13:30

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has hinted he will rotate his starting XI against Wolverhampton Wanders on Sunday, with an emphasis on younger players.

The Reds secured progress to the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday evening with a dramatic and outrageously entertaining 5-4 victory over Lyon in extra-time.

While everybody is buzzing about the result, the game was understandably taxing on the squad and Amorim wants to protect his players from the threat of injury.

Ruben has hinted he must now prioritise the Europa League and that could lead to younger players being granted opportunities to shine in the Premier League.

Speaking in his press conference to preview the match against Wolves, conducted on Thursday night, the boss gave this insight into the plans.

“I have to see it, players like [Diogo] Dalot, they are always ready but today he was really tired,” he said. “The guys that are at risk to have an injury, we will try to save them so we will see tomorrow [Friday].”

PRESS CONFERENCE | Ruben previews Sunday’s match against Wolves and hints he could rotate, with a focus on youth…

Asked if our young players are ready for the Premier League, Ruben admitted this season is not the best time to blood a new generation.

But he also pointed to 18-year-old defender Ayden Heaven as a good example of somebody who grasped their opportunity with both hands.

“I think it is not the best moment or the best season to put some kids to play, because, again, they need a strong base to really show what they can do. But in this moment we need to do it and sometimes you have surprises.

“Ayden just played and I can be honest, we did it because we had injuries in that moment. But today, I think Ayden is my player so when he is ready and facing the competition in the team, he is ready to play. So you don’t know.

“Amass did really well. Chido, when he played, he played quite well. It is a difficult moment, it is not the right moment for the kids to play, but if we have to do it then we will do it.”

Amorim also confirmed in his press conference that Victor Lindelof and Noussair Mazraoui will be available on Sunday, after both had to deal with “personal issues” during the Lyon game.

Q&A: Ruben’s press conference v Wolves

Old Trafford.

Friday 18 April 2025 13:30

Ruben Amorim has acknowledged the quality of Wolverhampton Wanderers, their manager Vitor Pereira and top goalscorer Matheus Cunha ahead of Sunday’s game.

The Manchester United head coach began his pre-match press conference by heaping praise on the Black Country outfit, who visit the Theatre of Dreams in the Premier League this weekend.

As you can read in the Q&A below, Ruben also answered questions about his line-up, plans to integrate young players in the top flight, Andre Onana’s performance against Lyon and more…

Wolves are on a great run under Vitor Pereira. What do you make of them?
“I think he is doing an amazing job, he is playing 3-4-3, he is doing quite well and he is changing some players. He has really quality players. Cunha, all these guys, they have a real quality, they are fresh so we know that it is going to be a tough match. And we are going to need a lot from our supporters. I know it’s a bad thing to ask anything from our fans this season but we need them on Sunday.”

You’ve mentioned you might take some risks with your team selection this weekend. How much of a change do you expect to make?
“I have to see it, players like Dalot, they are always ready but today he was really tired. The guys that are at risk to have an injury, we will try to save them so we will see tomorrow [Friday].”

PRESS CONFERENCE | Ruben previews Sunday’s match against Wolves and hints he could rotate, with a focus on youth…

You’ve said you are willing to play the kids. Do you believe they are ready?
“I think it is not the best moment or the best season to put some kids to play, because, again, they need a strong base to really show what they can do. But in this moment we need to do it and sometimes you have surprises. Ayden [Heaven] just played and I can be honest, we did it because we had injuries in that moment. Chido, [Obi] when he played, he played quite well. It is a difficult moment, it is not the right moment for the kids to play, but if we have to do it then we will do it.”

Will Victor Lindelof be available?
“He is available, he has personal issues like Nous [Mazraoui], so we had to let him go. But everything is okay now and I know football is important but there are things that are more important. They will be ready to face Wolves in the next game.”

You haven’t been able to play Chido in the Europa League. Is he likely to get more minutes in the Premier League?
“Yes, I think so.”

Just on Nous, when you say personal issues, is that something that came to light during the game?
“Both [his and Lindelof’s issue came] during the game, and sometimes you can’t control these things and everything happened this season, but everything is okay now.”

How impressed were you with Andre Onana?
“I think he did really well, so he did a good game and he has to continue to do good games and I am really happy for him because it was a tough moment, but let’s move forward. Now he has to be ready for next game.”

You mentioned Cunha. What have you made of him in the last two seasons? He’s said he wants to take a step up in his career – do you think he could play for Manchester United?
“I just gave the example because I just remember about Matheus, that he is scoring a lot of goals. It is just that.”

Declan Rice ‘would have chosen Man Utd’ over Arsenal for same wages as regret revealed

Rio Ferdinand has once again revealed his regret over Manchester United failing to sign Declan Rice and is convinced the midfielder would have chosen his former side over Arsenal if offered the chance.

Rice moved to the Emirates from West Ham for £100m in the summer of 2023 and other than a late hijack attempt from Manchester City faced no real competition to sign him despite previous strong interest from both Manchester United and Chelsea.

United had finished third behind Arsenal in second the season before, meaning both clubs were offering Champions League football at the time.

He has gone on to greater heights under Mikel Arteta, reaching his zenith across the two legs of Arsenal’s Champions League quarter final win over Real Madrid, scoring two unbelievable free-kicks in the first game before drawing similar praise for his display at the Bernabeu.

There are now suggestions the England international could be in the running for the Ballon d’Or and Ferdinand was full of praise for the 26-year-old before claiming he would have picked United over Arsenal had his former side offered him the same wages.

Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel: “The first tie killed it but they [Arsenal] were magnificent, I thought, over two legs.

“Declan Rice, I think, you know when you look at players and go where was the moment he stood up and said, ‘guys, the top table, I’m at it’. I think this tie says that.

“Doing against a team of that magnitude, that type of team, that champion. And we [Manchester United] didn’t go and sign him.

“I think, and I will stand by this, if Man United had come to the table with a chequebook and said, ‘we’ll match what Arsenal pay’, I think Declan Rice would have chosen Man United.”

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League match against Ipswich Town on Sunday, Arteta believes Rice is now in a “different dimension” following his two performances against Madrid.

“He’s learning more and more,” Arteta said.

“I think performances like he had in this side against Real Madrid actually just puts the player in a different dimension and that’s why we brought him here.

“That’s why we demand him as well to take more steps and to be more decisive in games because he can do it.

“We’ve been talking about it for the last few weeks and to be at this stage is not easy. He’s done it two times in a row.

“Now he’s maintaining that level of consistency, belief and undoubtedly his role will be bigger and bigger.”

An eyewitness account from the Stretford End

Friday 18 April 2025 12:45

Last Sunday, the world watched on, rapt, as Manchester United fan Rory McIlroy won the Masters, lost it, and then won it again, in golf’s own version of extra-time. On Thursday, the football team he loves followed his lead.

Where to start with Manchester United 5 Lyon 4? How to convey the madness of that match-going experience?

The scoreline gives its own indication: Old Trafford has never even hosted a United game that finished 5-4 before, and this ground has been standing for more than 115 years! The only other occasion we’ve won by this score on any ground was at Highbury in February 1958, in the Busby Babes’ final game on English soil. Last night was also the first nine-goal game in Europa League history.

But those nine goals only really provide an outline of the chaos contained therein.

For a true reflection of what we all experienced last night, you had to be there. You had to see the faces – thousands of them, barrelling out of Old Trafford in a state of utter shock.

Some were joyous, some simply exhausted; a few appeared like pale ghosts that had temporarily left this realm for a distant planet.

Full 120: United v Lyon Video

Full 120: United v Lyon

FULL 120 | It was officially a classic European night at Old Trafford against Lyon! Devour the entire match replay…

It had all started so serenely, with arguably United’s best 45 minutes of football under Ruben Amorim. Diogo Dalot’s expertly taken goal, just prior to half-time, had made the game almost safe, according to many around me in the Stretford End.

The players and our head coach had implored the Red Army to bring its best on Thursday, and I’m proud to say that we did. Old Trafford was rocking for much of the first half: an impressive tifo was unveiled in front of the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand before kick-off, pyrotechnics popped, and John Denver and ‘Take me home, United Road’ produced the effect that Bruno Fernandes believes it can.

The words on that tifo, ‘Never Gonna Stop’, became the theme of the night, really. The chant it’s taken from rang around the Theatre of Dreams at various points throughout the contest – though it meant quite different things at 0-0, 2-0 and, finally, 5-4.

But when we descended to the concourse at the interval, the tune of choice was ‘Follow, follow, because United are going to Bilbao!’ The beer was flowing, the smiles were secure and the dream was very much alive.

Little did we know the psychological trauma that was in store for us.

Surrendering a two-goal lead can happen. But conceding four consecutive goals at home (two during a period in which we held a one-man advantage, after Corentin Tolisso’s red card) was scarcely believable. It was a crushing blow to those of us on the stands.

Within half an hour, the atmosphere had shifted from euphoria to dysphoria. At 4-2 down, the air seemed to have been simply sucked out of Old Trafford. Some around me in the Stretford End wondered aloud whether the season was ending, crumbling, before our eyes.

Some even left the stadium the second that Alexandre Lacazette’s penalty hit the bottom corner.

Initially, there was silence. Stunned silence. But then the first tentative cries of belief.

‘United! United!’

At that point it was only a flicker. Did we really actually believe it was possible? Of course we did. It’s Manchester United. It’s Old Trafford. This club came back from a living hell in 1958. The idea that we will never give in is baked into our identity.

But we weren’t exactly placing any bets. Not yet, anyway. But then, a slice of luck: a penalty for Thiago Almada’s foul on Casemiro. Bruno scores, and the Red Army is off the life-support machine and ready to return to normal activity.

For the next few minutes, it’s just pure stress. Lyon are down at every opportunity – interrupting play, trying to cadge a few free seconds wherever possible. It’s nausery 101, and we’ve seen it all before, but it’s still infuriating.

Surely there’ll be four or five minutes added on at the end of 120 minutes?

Remarkably, as it turns out, we’ll barely need them. We won’t need even a penalty shootout.

Three of the most perfect touches from the right foot of Kobbie Mainoo send Old Trafford into paroxysms of joy not seen since Amad’s winner against the Scousers, 13 months, to the day, earlier.

I’m more than a hundred yards away, in the Stretford End, and it’s chaos. These are the kinds of moments you live for: emotional embraces with people you’ve never met, some of which you will never see again. Lads fall down several rows in the melee; the cheeks of fellas in their sixties and seventies are returned to full, red, boyish ruddiness.

‘Was that Casemiro?’

We haven’t got a clue at this stage, until Alan Keegan delivers the news that it’s Kobbie over the Tannoy. (Let’s just pause to praise Casemiro, by the way. He was the architect of all three of United’s extra-time goals – how important was Amorim’s decision to rest him at Newcastle?)

Staggeringly, there’s more to come. Harry Maguire.

But you know all about that. You’ve seen the goals; you’ve read the reports. And if you’ve been to Old Trafford and you’ve experienced one of the many, many winners we’ve scored in what has colloquially become known as ‘Fergie time’, you’ll know what this kind of moment feels like.

There are things in your life that mean more: the birth of children, the satisfaction of personal successes, the first chimings of a romantic connection… But if you love your football club, there is no greater momentary rush, no more spine-tingling high, than the one you feel when your team scores late after a preposterous comeback, in a game where your hopes were, at one point, almost non-existent.

It’s as close as you can come to an out-of-body experience (legally, at least), and it can leave you utterly shattered.

When the final whistle goes, we wait for all of the players to leave the pitch. We sing for each and every one of them. We sing about Bilbao, about hope, about belief.

Half an hour earlier, you had no idea that this was going to turn into one of the best nights of your life. But here it is.

Maguire’s 15 goals are so, so enjoyable! Video

Maguire’s 15 goals are so, so enjoyable!

HERO | The great Harry Maguire has now scored 15 goals for United! His three most recent have all been dramatic headers…

The morning after, the buzz is still writhing inside you. Your phone is hammered with messages, memes and clips that let you know that there are thousands of us, all over the world, all feeling that same buzz, that same connection to this wonderful thing we all put so much of our energy into.

“It’s a very Good Friday!” goes one message, attached to an image of Harry Maguire mocked up as Jesus Christ – a man that knows a few things about comebacks.

“I still don’t think I’ve processed what actually happened last night – I was sat there in shock for about 10 minutes after the final whistle,” goes another text.

One lad, the owner of a cup season ticket, explained how 10 minutes before the end he had said farewell, for the season, to the guy that sits next to him, who always leaves five or 10 minutes early. It’s fair to say that no-one was expecting any further cup games at Old Trafford at that point.

“I guess I’ll see him one more time!” laughed the man with the cup season ticket.

What it all means won’t become clear until months, maybe years, to come. We don’t know if United will win the Europa League. We don’t know if this will be a turning point for the team, or Ruben Amorim.

All we know right now is that this was one of the greatest matches in Manchester United’s history, and yet another reminder of the immense richness that our team can add to our lives.

I’m still breathless, I’m still a bit baffled. And I’m still a believer.

We’re going to Bilbao. Definitely once, and maybe twice…

How social media is reacting to United 5 Lyon 4

Old Trafford.

Friday 18 April 2025 12:19

Manchester United’s 5-4 win over Lyon has been talk of the timeline across social media platforms since Thursday’s final whistle, as players, reporters, staff and supporters attempt to put into words what was a quite unbelievable night at Old Trafford.

United entered the final 20 minutes with a two-goal lead on the night and on aggregate, and looked to be on the way to securing a comfortable passage to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals, before a spirited Lyon comeback sparked an ending of epic proportions in M16.

Our French visitors scored twice to level the quarter-final tie and, with a man less following Corentin Tolisso’s 89th-minute red card, netted two more in extra-time to leave Ruben Amorim’s Reds staring down the barrel of a sudden exit.

An unimaginable turnaround was needed to swing things back in our favour but three goals in seven glorious minutes followed, first Bruno Fernandes from the penalty spot, then a cool curling finish from Kobbie Mainoo before an added-time winner off the forehead of Harry Maguire that sparked utter euphoria.

In fitting with a ‘tifo’ banner that carried the message ‘never gonna stop’, United never stopped believing… and the result? A magical Theatre of Dreams conclusion that everybody is talking about.

The mind-blowing total amount United would pocket if they lift the Europa League trophy in May

Manchester United fans experienced one of the most spectacular comebacks in European history yesterday when they beat Olympique Lyonnais 5-4 in extra-time.

The Red Devils looked down and out when they went 2-4 down after 110 minutes but they somehow mustered the spirit of great United teams of the past and rattled in three unanswered goals to win the match and tie.

United fans are desperate to win a trophy in what has been an appalling domestic season and now just three games stand in their way before this can become a reality.

According to football finance guru Swiss Ramble, the Red Devils had already pocketed €22.7 million in prize money by making it through the group stages.

Add to this the €2.5m for reaching the quarter final and €4.2m for reaching the semi-final where they will take on Athletic Club in May, the total earned so far by United is €29.4m.

A place in the final would guarantee an extra €7 million and winning the entire competition would see the Red Devils earn €13 million.

If they do lift the trophy, their total earnings from the competition will therefore have reached €42.4 million – around £36 million GBP.

According to The Athletic, the real economic prize of Champions League football would end up so much more than just the Europa League prize money.

“United could expect to walk away with more than £85 million by qualifying for Champions League football in the 2025-26 season,” the outlet says.

This figure is reached through a variety of different prizes. United would initially receive £16 million, as all clubs who begin the 32 team league stage are awarded this sum.

They would also receive money from UEFA’s “value pillar”, which sees clubs paid money for their previous performances in the Champions League.

Ruben Amorim’s side would also stand to make substantial figures from the four home games they would play as part of the league stage.

The club could expect to make something in the region of £21 million from their matches at Old Trafford next season were they to qualify.

Adding these figures to the Europa League prize money means that success in Bilbao guarantees United will have made £121 million from this season’s European odyssey.

These earnings and projected revenue could be crucial in the rebuild that Amorim wants to carry out this summer.

United will certainly make signings this upcoming window regardless of whether they win the Europa League or not. Nonetheless, an extra £121 million in the kitty would transform their summer plans dramatically.

Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.
