Man Utd: Amorim ‘decided’ one priority signing in shock timeframe in damning verdict of £47m flop

According to reports, it only took Ruben Amorim ‘two months’ to ‘decide’ that he wants Manchester United to sign a new goalkeeper.

Former Sporting Lisbon boss Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag at Man Utd towards the end of 2024 and he’s endured a rough start at Old Trafford with his side sitting 15th in our calender year table.

Amorim has struggled to implement his preferred 3-4-3 formation as his squad is not suited to his playing style and a couple of transfer windows are required to align the club with the head coach’s methods.

Man Utd are understood to be working with a tight budget heading into the summer and likely need to sell to raise funds before they can buy.

This was the case in January as Man Utd only signed Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven, while Antony and Marcus Rashford left on loan.

United need to be significantly more active this summer as upgrades are required in various positions.

Man Utd have been woeful in attack this season as they are crying out for a new striker, but they could also sign a goalkeeper with Andre Onana making mistakes at an increased regularity.

Onana grew into his debut season after joining Man Utd for around £47m in the 2023 summer window to replace David De Gea, but his performances have dramatically declined this season.

A report from Manchester Evening News claims the Red Devils will ‘target a striker and goalkeeper’ this summer, with a swift ‘decision’ made on Onana’s situation.

The report claims:

‘Manchester United intend to sign a goalkeeper and striker in what is shaping up to be a drastic summer transfer window at the club.

‘Ruben Amorim decided less than two months into his tenure that United would need a new goalkeeper to compete with Andre Onana and a centre forward is an urgent priority.

‘United have planned for a goalkeeper incoming for several months. Altay Bayindir could leave to increase his chances of starting for Turkey at the World Cup next year while Tom Heaton is considering retirement and his deal expires at the end of June.

‘Onana switched to the Lian Sports Group agency two months ago but sources have stressed he sees his future at United, despite several high-profile errors this season.’

Regarding potential striker targets, the report adds:

‘Ipswich Town goalscorer Liam Delap has been identified as an ideal recruit. Delap, 22, has scored 12 league goals this season and will have a £30million release clause.

‘Several elite clubs plan to recruit a goalscorer in the summer. Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres played under United coach Ruben Amorim and has a release clause in excess of £60m.

‘United have maintained contact with the agent of Benjamin Sesko, the RB Leipzig frontman who rejected United in summer 2022. Victor Osimhen was monitored by United during Napoli’s title-winning campaign in 2022-23 and he has pillaged 29 goals in 34 games on loan at Galatasaray.

‘Napoli have to sell Osimhen, 26, this summer as he is out of contract next year but it is unclear if United would have the budget to finance a deal.’

“Advancing”: Fabrizio Romano confirms United are working “fast” to complete blockbuster deal in June

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United are eager to complete a deal for Matheus Cunha “very fast” and possibly in June, when the summer transfer window commences.

United are eyeing attacking reinforcements and Cunha is believed to be a prime target for Ruben Amorim. It was indicated that the Red Devils want the Brazilian to slot into one of the No. 10 roles behind the striker.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers star is believed to be keen on the move and even dropped multiple subtle hints on Sunday, indicating as much, when the two sides clashed at Old Trafford.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United are inching closer to striking an agreement with Cunha over personal terms. This has now been confirmed by the reliable Romano, who goes on to add that the 25-year-old and Amorim created a bond when they met.

The Italian journalist said on his YouTube channel, “We knew about the interest, we knew about his name being on the list at Newcastle and Manchester United – both clubs wanted him.”

“But now we can say that Manchester United are leading the race to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves. Cunha signed a new deal in January with a £62.5m release clause. No need to negotiate with Wolves. Maybe they can talk about payment structure and clauses and all these sorts of things.”

“But in terms of agreement, the agreement has to be done with the player, not with the club in this case because there is a clause and I can tell you that in the last 48 hours, Manchester United had fresh contacts with the agents of Cunha.”

“It’s been really positive because of the project explained by United to the agents of the player. The feeling between Cunha and Ruben Amorim is excellent.”

“Someone is telling me that there was some sort of great connection between United, the coach [Amorim] and the player [Cunha]. So it was a very positive contact. Because of this meeting, we can consider United ahead of Newcastle and also other clubs interested in Cunha.”

“He was the dream target for Nottingham Forest who are still fighting for Champions League football. He was on Arsenal’s list in December but they decided not to proceed. Now United are leading the race. My understanding is that United will push to get this deal done soon.”

“I don’t expect Cunha to be one of the cases that we will discuss in July, August or in the final days of the market. I think United will try to be fast. United will try to anticipate the other clubs. Financial Fair Play is a point, so for sure United will need to assess the details of the story to make sure they can find a way.”

“For sure they will be movements in this Cunha story very soon but the movements have already started on the player side because United had a very good contact and Cunha is a very strong strong candidate to become a new United player. So conversations are advancing.”

Meanwhile, United are back in action on Sunday when they go away to Bournemouth.

Man Utd: €80m target’s transfer destination ‘confirmed’ amid Liverpool battle after Romano reveal

Manchester United have made RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons a ‘priority target’ this summer as it’s ‘confirmed’ the €80m playmaker will move to the Premier League this summer.

United’s Premier League nightmare continued on Sunday as Wolves condemned them to their 15th defeat of the campaign, leaving them 14th in the table and looking over their shoulder as West Ham are just two points off them in 17th.

They’re now assured of their worst-ever Premier League points tally and only Europa League glory can put a gloss on their miserable season.

Recruitment chief Christopher Vivell is currently scouring the market for new additions as Ruben Amorim looks to put his stamp on the squad in the summer and one player they are hoping to bring in is Netherlands international Simons.

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg revealed this week: ‘He’s under contract until 2027. Top clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool and many others are all keen on him.

‘Leipzig want €80m [£69m] for Xavi if he decides to leave this summer. A departure is possible for him.’

Speaking about his future this week, Simons said: “I’m still a young player, I have many dreams – and the club knows that. But right now, the most important thing for me is to play well in the upcoming games. Then we have the international matches, and after that we’ll sit down and see what happens.”

It was later claimed that United have made an ‘offer’ of €135m (£116m) for Simons ahead of the summer transfer window, though quite where they’ve got that money from we don’t know and why they would offer that much when Leipzig want €80m also isn’t entirely clear.

But Spanish outlet Fichajes claim Simons ‘has become one of the priority targets for both Manchester United and Liverpool’ with the 22-year-old ‘showing a surprising maturity and a creative capacity’ this season, with German outlet Bild insisting his ‘projection and versatilty fit perfectly with the needs’ of both Premier League clubs.

And it’s ‘confirmed that his future is in the Premier League’, with Paris Saint-Germain – who sold Simons to Leipzig for €50m in January – being ‘attentive to possible movements’ as they inserted a sell-on clause of an unknown percentage in that deal.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed on Sunday that the Premier League is Simons’ ‘most likely’ landing spot this summer as his ‘dream’ will likely have to wait.

He wrote on X: ‘Xavi Simons plans for potential summer move as concrete possibility, as reported weeks ago. Premier League clubs are informed as it’s the most likely destination for fee around €75m to RB Leipzig. Xavi dreams to play for Barça one day, but it’s unlikely for this summer.’

United chief hails “special” academy duo after they hit “really magical” milestone

Manchester United’s director of Academy, Nick Cox, has lauded Chido Obi and Harry Amass for managing to make their senior debuts for the club.

Obi joined United from Arsenal in the summer and made his debut for the Red Devils in February, coming on from the bench in the late stages of a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

One month later, Amass achieved the same feat away at Leicester City. Both players have gone on to rack up a few more first-team appearances. Amass made his first start for United two weeks ago, in the loss against Newcastle at St James’ Park.

He started again on Sunday as his side were narrowly beaten again by Wolverhampton Wanderers. Despite being on the losing side, Amass was brilliant and earned praise from Ruben Amorim for his contributions in the game.

Obi made a lively impression after coming off the bench against Wolves, further intensifying calls from fans for him to be handed his first start.

Earlier today, Obi and Amass were honoured with debut frames in Carrington’s Graduate Lounge, commemorating their status as the club’s 252nd and 253rd academy graduates respectively.

— Manchester United (@ManUtd) April 21, 2025

Cox said, “Football is forward-thinking, fast-moving and everyone’s thinking about next week, next game, next contract, where we might get to in the league etc. The staff will be the same, and the players will be the same. We’re always looking for what’s next, so how do we help 254 make that debut?”

“But it’s important that we take some time to live in the present moment to celebrate what I think is magical. I said to the boys: they’ve joined an exclusive club of players who’ve graduated from the youth team into the first team. And you can only get into that club through talent, hard work, determination, and persistence.”

“Money can’t buy your way into that club, you can only get there by having something special and having a special character as well.”

Cox continued, “What I think’s incredibly powerful is the boys can look at the names on that wall and they can pull out some legends, but if you go to the bottom of that wall, they’re actually looking at their mates. They’re looking at players they’ve played in the same team as.”

“So it takes this really difficult challenge, really magical thing that not many people get to do, and it normalises it and it makes it real, and it’s a real sense of motivation to think: ‘my friends can do it, I can do it, too’. That’s the beauty of this club.”

“There was a month between these debuts, right? So it’s competitive. That’s the environment we have here. The fact the boys can compete with each other is a really powerful part of what happens here, and that’s not the case at many football clubs.”

Just as United were celebrating Obi and Amass, another youngster made his first-team debut on Sunday, becoming the 254th academy graduate – Tyler Fredricson.

Fredricson played all 90 minutes of the meeting with Wolves and was exceptional on the left side of the three-man defence.

“He can leave”: Fabrizio Romano shockingly suggests United looking to sell in-form maestro

While plenty of big-name Manchester United players are underperforming, Casemiro’s renaissance under Ruben Amorim has come as a major surprise.

The head coach clearly felt the Brazilian was not good enough to play in his high-intensity system and he overlooked the defensive midfielder in 14 games early on during his tenure.

Injuries and the lack of options meant the Portuguese tactician was forced to reinstate the former Real Madrid superstar into the starting XI and the 33-year-old has been a revelation since then.

Amorim revealed that he figured out how best to use Casemiro and the Brazil international has not let his coach down, shielding the backline while initiating attacks with his impressive passing range.

Casemiro’s renaissance

He is in the 95th percentile for shots taken and in the 99th percentile for tackles and blocks (via fbref). He has made 20 appearances under Amorim while registering three assists.

And he has clearly overtaken Manuel Ugarte in the pecking order, judging from how the coach has utilised him in recent weeks.

The former Sao Paulo man has rolled back the years and almost single-handedly dragged his team back in the tie against Olympique Lyonnais as the 20-time English league champions recorded a memorable comeback.

He still has one year left in his current deal and while INEOS want to get rid of him due to his humongous wages, Amorim might have something else to say given the form the midfield maestro has shown.

But Fabrizio Romano has told Givemesport that the co-owners have not changed their minds and are still looking for a buyer. Should a suitable bid arrive, Casemiro will be let go.

Could still be sold

“Yes, it’s still a possibility. If a good proposal for player and club arrives, he can still leave.”

Saudi Arabian clubs have been long-term suitors but were reluctant to pay his humongous wages and United’s steep asking price, which resulted in a move not materialising in the past.

Whether INEOS shift their policy and are open to now letting him go on the cheap might dictate Casemiro’s future. The midfielder, on his part, is keen to see out his contract in Manchester.

And fans will not oppose his stance any longer having seen his recent form. While he is no longer the force he was, he can surely get the job done when called upon in the big games.

United talent admits to key flaw he’s fixing before going full beast mode

Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu has pinpointed his attacking output as an area of his game that needs work.

Dorgu joined United from Serie A club Lecce during the January transfer window in a deal worth around £25million. He has enjoyed an assured start to life at Old Trafford, demonstrating very encouraging signs of the player he can develop into if well-nurtured.

The Dane has made 12 appearances across all competitions but has yet to register a goal or an assist. During the 1-0 defeat to Wolves on Sunday, he sent in two dangerous crosses from the right side but there were no takers.

Speaking to United’s matchday programme [as quoted by the Manchester Evening News] Dorgu expressed his desire to become more of a threat in the final third. He also mentioned two players he looks up to and is aiming to emulate in his performances. He particularly mentioned decision-making as something he is eager to improve on.

“It’s a very attack-minded position. I think I just need to improve my decision-making, to think fast on the pitch and to connect better with my teammates.”

“I really like to get forward and help the team score goals and I just need to improve on my decision-making. But it will come.”

He shared that he’s been studying footage of Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) and Theo Hernandez (AC Milan) to learn what it takes to become a more impactful wing-back.

“Yeah, I think they suit the position very well. They’re very attack-minded and they get forward a lot on the pitch. Alphonso Davies plays as a winger in the internationals and he has the quality to play there as well.”

Dorgu added about United’s wretched season, “I think the pressure is big at every club but especially United. I think the pressure is high because the expectation is so high. But being calm on the pitch helps every player to improve and develop.”

“Obviously, you know when you come in during a season like this, there was the pressure, with the expectation of the fans for the new players, it will be higher, for us to help the team as much as possible. I knew that from the start.”

The 20-year-old opened up on United teammate Chido Obi, tipping him to become a superstar for the club in the future. Dorgu also revealed the pair knew each other even before arriving at Old Trafford.

“I talk to Chido. I know him from Denmark. Our families used to go to church together, so I know him really well.”

“I talked to him before he moved here. He has done really well. He has so much potential to be a great striker for United. We’re both young but he’s younger than me and he will be a great player for United in the future.”

United are back in action on Sunday when they go away to Bournemouth.

Lindelof’s wife reveals shocking reason why United star rushed out of Old Trafford at half-time vs. Lyon

Victor Lindelof’s wife, Maja, has confirmed why the Manchester United defender was forced to leave Old Trafford urgently during his side’s comeback victory over Olympique Lyonnais.

Lindelof was named on the bench against the French side and looked set to come on at half-time but the change never happened, as he stormed out of Old Trafford.

He wasn’t the only one – Noussair Mazraoui started the game but was taken off and also had to leave the stadium. Luke Shaw replaced Mazraoui.

Ruben Amorim explained that the pair left because of family reasons but everything had been sorted. Amorim did not specify the nature of these issues.

Lindelof was back in the squad for Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers, and it’s now been revealed why he had to make a swift exit against Lyon.

The player’s wife Maja told Expressen, “An hour before the [Lyon] game started, our babysitter called and said they were in an ambulance on the way to hospital.”

“My youngest son Francis had split his entire head open. He had been chasing his big brother Ted Louie at home, and fallen into our glass staircase.”

“His forehead was in two parts. He was in hospital both Thursday and Friday. He had to have plastic surgery to put his forehead back together. He was put under anaesthetic.”

She continued, “It is the first time I have experienced something like this happening with one of my children. It was incredibly unpleasant, and not something I want to experience again. The operation went well, and Francis is back on track. He is a Viking, and back to normal. Everyone was so worried, but he continues his life as if nothing has happened.”

“The doctors say he will have a big scar on his forehead. But never mind – I’m just happy that it went so well.”

The Lindelöfs, who tied the knot in May 2018, are expecting their third child later this year.

Meanwhile, United are back in action on Sunday when they go to the Vitality to face Bournemouth.

Man Utd: Red Devils deal Newcastle huge blow as ‘Amorim sways’ top target with deal ‘inching closer’

Newcastle have been “more aggressive” in their pursuit of Wolves star Matheus Cunha but Ruben Amorim has ‘swayed’ the Brazilian, according to reports.

Cunha will be at the centre of a transfer battle this summer as the Brazilian looks set to leave Molineux no matter what as Premier League rivals look prepare to trigger his £62.5m release clause.

The 25-year-old has managed 16 goals and four assists in the Premier League this season to catch the eye of a number of clubs, though it now looks as though he will move to either Manchester United or Newcastle at the end of the season.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims Newcastle have been “more aggressive” than United in their pursuit of Cunha as they see him as “the perfect player”.

Romano told GIVEMESPORT: “Yeah, I think it can be a quick deal, to be honest. I think so. Let’s see how quick, but I think this can be a quick deal.

“Because, as you mentioned, there is a release clause and all parties involved, the player, club, they really want to resolve the situation as soon as possible.

“So I think it can be a quick deal. There is genuine interest from Newcastle. They really, really like the player. They believe it could be perfect for their style.”

“I think Newcastle, in terms of interest at the moment, are a bit more aggressive, because they consider Matheus Cunha as a perfect player for Eddie Howe.

“And so I think they can really go strong on this one.”

But Howe and Newcastle look set to be disappointed according to the Daily Mail, who claim Cunha is ‘inching closer’ to a move to Old Trafford.

‘The 25-year old looks to have been swayed by the prospect of playing a pivotal role in Ruben Amorim’s squad revamp’, the report states.

Manchester United are also interested in signing a Championship duo and battling Liverpool for the signing of RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons.

Romano revealed on Sunday that the Premier League is Simons’ ‘most likely’ landing spot this summer as his ‘dream’ will likely have to wait.

1 goal, 8 aerial duels won, 7 clearances: United loanee puts in all-round colossal performance

Manchester United loanee Sonny Aljofree scored in Accrington Stanley’s 1-1 draw with Carlisle United today.

The ‘Owd Reds conceded a late equaliser but Aljofree was in fine form on only his second appearance after long-term injury.

A long throw was only partially cleared before the ball was swung back into the box, where Aljofree got away from his marker to apply the finishing touch into the bottom corner.

The United youngster was also on top form defensively as he made seven clearances in the match. He was also outstanding in the air, winning eight out of 12 aerials duels.

Aljofree also came out on top in his only ground duel of the match.

The performance will mean even more to him as he kept his Carrington clubmate, Joe Hugill, quiet.

Playing from the start, Hugill failed to take advantage of his rare moment to shine. The forward has struggled for regular game time and has only managed two goals during his loan spell at Carlisle.

He played 77 minutes before being subbed off and had two shots on goal during the game.

Getting involved in matches has been a regular problem for Hugill on loan and this was exemplified by him only completing one pass out of an attempted two. He also only managed 21 touches of the ball during the contest. Unfortunately, he was incredibly ineffective in duels, failing to win any of his aerial or ground battles.

Rhys Bennett was active in defence for Fleetwood Town but could not prevent his side from falling to a 1-3 defeat away to Harrogate Town.

He made 10 clearances and won a highly impressive nine aerial duels out of 12. The young defender was also quite effective in possession, completing six long ball attempts and having 58 touches of the ball.

Finally, Ethan Ennis played the final 28 minutes of Doncaster Rovers’ 3-0 victory over Colchester United.

He had one shot on target, which was classed as a big chance missed and completed his only dribble attempt. The young winger did struggle to get involved in the build-up play as he could only attempt six passes during his entire time on the pitch.

United “inching close to agreement” with Cunha, terms could be struck as early as next month – report

Manchester United are reportedly on the verge of reaching an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha over a sensational summer deal.

United are expected to dip into the market in search of attacking reinforcements to address their ongoing struggles in front of goal this season. The team’s main attacking options – Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho, and Joshua Zirkzee – have struggled to deliver consistently throughout the season, highlighting the need for fresh alternatives.

That’s where Cunha enters the picture. The Wolves man has had an outstanding season, despite his team spending most of the campaign battling relegation.

He has struck an impressive 14 goals and provided an additional four assists in 28 Premier League games. In 31 matches across all competitions, Cunha has notched 16 goals.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United view Cunha as a perfect fit for one of the two No 10 positions behind the main striker. The Brazilian is also believed to favour a switch to Old Trafford ahead of any other potential transfer destinations.

As United slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Wolves on Sunday, Cunha left a trail of subtle hints that strongly suggested he wants to join the 20-time English champions.

Now, the Daily Mail reveal that United are “inching close to an agreement” with the 25-year-old.

Simon Jones adds, “United will still need to activate the Brazilian’s £62.5million release clause but are hopeful of having terms in place by next month while they still have headroom under Profit and Sustainability Rules.”

It’s understood Newcastle are United’s main competitors in the race to land Cunha but the player has “been swayed by the prospect of playing a pivotal role” under Amorim.

But he is not the only attacker United are looking at.

The Mail note that the Red Devils have “also held discussions” over Victor Osimhen (Napoli), Xavi Simons (RB Leipzig), Benjamin Sesko (RB Leipzig), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace) and Antoine Semenyo (Bournemouth).

United are back in action on Sunday when they go away to Bournemouth.
