Man Utd mess to Arsenal striker hunt: 10 Premier League signings clubs must make in summer

Some teams need a complete overhaul. Others just need that one missing piece. But every club on this list – from title-chasing Arsenal to whatever Manchester United are right now – has a glaring hole that must be filled before 2025/26 rolls around.

We’ve ranked the top 10 positions which need addressing in the Premier League this summer.

10) Manchester City: Right-back
We were torn between Manchester City and Aston Villa needing right-backs in the 2025 summer transfer window but Pep Guardiola’s side were given the edge considering Unai Emery actually has one at his disposal, even if Matty Cash is someone the Spaniard will likely try to replace this summer.

Rico Lewis has struggled this season and is someone Guardiola is keen to play in midfield, with Matheus Nunes, naturally a midfielder, deputising at right-back in the absence of Kyle Walker, who fell out of favour and was loaned out to AC Milan in January.

It will likely be a big rebuild at the Etihad this summer but Rodri’s return will be better than any signing Guardiola can make. The ACL injury he suffered completely f***ed City’s season.

They have defensive frailties and starting Nunes right-back has certainly played a part in that, though Pep has been forced to deal with lots of injuries at the back. Manuel Akanji has been out for ages, John Stones is a constant sick note and Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake have had their issues. The champions signed two centre-backs in January, so a right-back is next on the agenda.

9) West Ham: Striker
“But the motivation, sorry we were s*** and I’m very angry. It is not the first time where we score a goal and then the next goal kick we just shoot the ball long. We don’t try to play football anymore. We don’t push up anymore, we just sink and that’s not the way we want to play… The coach was very clear with what he wants, we have to do it all and everyone has to do it.”

Niclas Fullkrug was refreshingly honest and hilariously furious in his post-match analysis of West Ham’s 1-1 draw against relegated Southampton on Saturday. A lot needs to be addressed this summer and ironically, we’ve decided to hone in on the position of the guy who was brave (or just angry) enough to call out his side’s s*** performance(s).

We’re struggling to remember a season when we haven’t said West Ham need a striker. Lo and behold, this year is no different. They could also do with a new centre-back, left-back and two defensive midfielders as well, mind. And maybe a new manager.

8) Bournemouth: Goalkeeper
Having a reliable goalscorer is something fan narratives will make you believe is the most important thing in football, but there is nothing quite as comforting as a reliable pair of hands in net. It breathes confidence throughout the whole team knowing you don’t have to worry about a dodgy player in between the sticks and for all the criticism he has received throughout his Premier League career, Kepa Arrizabalaga has been a safe bet for Bournemouth this season.

Kepa is currently on loan from Chelsea and there is an expectation that he will join the Cherries permanently, which will be a huge sigh of relief for Andoni Iraola, especially if he can get that particular business done early on this summer.

Neto, 35, is set to return from his loan at Arsenal having played one minute for them up to now and it’s clear Iraola doesn’t fancy him, which is fair. Failing to swiftly sort out the futures of both goalkeepers could create an almighty mess at the Vitality, creating the possibility of Neto starting in the Premier League next season.

As a side note, Bournemouth need to sign a new right-back. Julian Araujo was brought in last summer but he has failed to impress in the appearances he has made, though a long-term injury has prevented him from proving himself. You get what you get with Adam Smith and he is a terrific professional and captain, but this is a position Iraola must seek to improve at the end of 2024/25.

7) Liverpool: Striker
Had Mohamed Salah not signed a new contract, Liverpool‘s need for a new striker would be a lot more urgent. Still, there is no doubt Arne Slot needs to bring in a No. 9 this summer, especially with Darwin Nunez heading for the exit door.

With the majority of the Reds’ goals coming from Salah on the right, Slot will likely target someone who can enable him and Cody Gakpo or Luis Diaz to be the main attacking outlet.

Nunez’s chaos makes him both a brilliant and horrible player to have, but it really depends on the situation. Going for someone more refined, consistent and clever is the priority. Whom? Not sure, really. Matheus Cunha, maybe? Hugo Ekitike, perhaps? Even with the Premier League title coming to Anfield, Slot is going to be a busy man in the 2025 summer transfer window.

6) Liverpool: Left-back
There is a debate to be had over what Liverpool’s summer priority position should be: a new left-back or striker? Evidently, we think it’s the former. A new right-back should definitely be signed but Slot does not need to spend big money on one, with Conor Bradley good enough to come in to the starting XI following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s much-maligned free transfer to Real Madrid.

Andy Robertson is a Liverpool legend but his race is run. Milos Kerkez is the natural replacement and the only player we will mention as a potential signing with any kind of conviction.

5) Manchester United: Centre-midfield
How long have you got? This top 10 could have been occupied by Manchester United alone and while that might feel like our wet dream, it most certainly is not.

Realistically, Ruben Amorim needs a new goalkeeper, centre-back, wing-back and a few forwards, but that is only realistic if United win the Europa League AND sell several players for big money. Not happening, is it?

That means Amorim needs to be very clever about his summer recruitment. Finding a midfield partner for Manuel Ugarte has to be one of his primary focuses. Bruno Fernandes must be utilised further up the pitch for me, Clive.

4) Brighton: Centre-back
Brighton showed great ambition in Fabian Hurzeler’s first summer in charge, attempting to improve in almost every position, but they did not sign a new centre-back, much to our surprise. Jan Paul van Hecke is fine, yes, but Lewis Dunk’s club legend status probably played a part in that. Although he is injured, Igor Julio has been all but written off as well – he doesn’t look like becoming a top-tier Premier League centre-back unfortunately.

Dunk’s form should be highlighted more than it is, in truth. He has been miles off it recently and Brighton are paying for it. He is obviously not the sole reason their recent form has been horrendous but a better centre-back next to Van Hecke would have made a positive difference.

Brighton don’t need us to identify targets for them; they are among the best in the business and some unknown Chilean will undoubtedly appear for £2million and be worth £200million by next January. Adding the right centre-back will make a huge difference to one of the most inconsistent teams in the division.

The Seagulls seem to go through the most contrasting spells under Hurzeler, either being the first or last team you would want to play against. Their transfer savviness lifts the ceiling higher than clubs like Brentford, Bournemouth and Fulham and this is a transfer that must happen to get closer to the ‘Big Six’.

3) Chelsea: Striker – not a goalkeeper!
We don’t want to hear anything about Chelsea needing a goalkeeper. Enzo Maresca has said they will not sign one this summer and he is one of the most honest, transparent managers in the game; just use the ‘we are not title contenders’ point as an example, he was 100 per cent correct there.

Filip Jorgensen and Robert Sanchez are both bloody dodgy, though coming in and out of the team under Maresca hardly helps their sharpness and confidence. They are error-prone and neither seems to want the No. 1 shirt, which opens the door for a couple of goalkeepers who have been out on loan this season: Djordje Petrovic and Mike Penders. The latter is apparently the next Thibaut Courtois and we have all seen Petrovic before; while he is not amazing, he is better than Sanchez and Jorgensen, and he is having an incredibly productive season at Strasbourg with fellow Blues loanee Andrey Santos.

For what feels like the ninth year in a row, Chelsea are heading into a summer transfer window desperately needing to sign a striker. Nicolas Jackson was hot and cold before picking up an injury in February and has just been cold since returning, not creating a solid case for being Chelsea’s first-choice striker in 2025/26.

The big question is always who the bloody hell these clubs should prioritise signing. Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap appears to be the Blues’ top target but they are also in the picture for the players expected to move this summer like Benjamin Sesko, Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres.

What is for certain is that a new striker is the missing piece of the puzzle at Stamford Bridge and has been for a while now. They will likely target another new centre-back and re-signing Marc Guehi would be so Chelsea, but getting a goal machine in the door is crucial.

2) Arsenal: Striker
Is Mikel Merino the long-term striker solution for Arsenal? Of course not. Has he still been a superb stopgap for them with Kai Havertz out? Definitely. Finally, is Havertz the man to lead the line for the Gunners when he returns from injury? No – and we have known that for a while.

Mikel Arteta signed Havertz as a midfielder and reluctantly put him up front halfway through 2023/24, which ended up being a very productive tactical switch. The German even started this season well but gradually faded, strengthening the Arsenal striker narrative when the January transfer window came around. For one reason or another, Arteta was not given a new striker and a week after the winter window closed, Havertz suffered a season-ending injury.

Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge fell by the wayside and again questions are being asked about Arteta’s recruitment. He has bought plenty of defensive players but his only attacking signings have been Raheem Sterling, Marquinhos, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus and Willian. We are not even going to count Havertz as a signing for his front three.

Arsenal will surely change that this summer and Sporting striker Gyokeres is reportedly Arteta’s top target after the unattainable Alexander Isak – who will surely only be a realistic target if Newcastle United miss out on Champions League football. RB Leipzig’s Sesko is also in contention and has a release clause in his contract.

There is no doubt that this is the position Arteta needs a world-class reinforcement in and if he gets it right, they should win the Premier League next season.

A defensive-midfielder is also a big priority for the Gunners but Martin Zubimendi’s move from Real Sociedad seems all but confirmed, meaning we ignored the temptation to include them twice.

1) Manchester United: Striker
The Red Devils have invested heavily in the striker position in the last two transfer windows, spending a combined £100m+ on Rasmus Hojlund in 2023 and Joshua Zirkzee in 2024. Neither player looks like a natural goalscorer and the latter doesn’t even look like a natural striker. Zirkzee fits one of the two roles behind the No. 9 in Ruben Amorim’s system, while Hojlund doesn’t seem suited for the Premier League unfortunately.

He is still very young so we are not completely writing him off, but given Zirkzee’s inability to lead the line, it will be another year of Hojlund being relied on as United’s only natural No. 9 who can legally buy a beer.

There are so many issues Amorim must address this summer and winning the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League would go a long way to helping him do that. Without that extra £100m income, it will be an extremely difficult summer with multiple academy graduates – like Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho – being made available for transfer.

Improving up front will go a long way to improving Amorim’s United but there is so much work to be done. We are not convinced a prime Thierry Henry could do much to fix this team. Despite that, a new striker has to be their priority.

“He’s got that about him”: United legend identifies the one striker who can succeed at Old Trafford – exclusive

Manchester United should prioritise a move for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap this summer because a new number nine “has to come in” this summer, according to Paul Parker.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Peoples Person, courtesy of Betano, the former United defender is adamant the club needs to secure head coach Ruben Amorim a new striker or the struggles the Red Devils have endured this season will continue.

“A new number nine has to come if Amorim is to go forward as a manager. [INEOS] need to give him a striker to work with, it’s as simple as that. Someone needs to deliver him a striker and then that takes away any excuses on that end.”

Striker’s Struggles

Only five teams in the Premier League have scored fewer times than United this campaign – West Ham, Everton, Ipswich, Leicester City and Southampton – with the team’s inability to score goals almost perfectly correlating with their place in the table, 14th.

The club’s current striking partnership of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have combined for just six league goals – three apiece – with neither player looking capable of leading the line at Old Trafford. As such, Parker observes, a new striker who is “hungry to play for a big club” is needed; one who embraces the pressure of a club like United, rather than shies away from it.

And while the Reds have been linked with blockbuster deals for the two Victors  – Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres – there will be a long line of suitors across Europe for both forwards, with a transfer fee in excess of £60 million for either player.

United’s finances are unlikely to stretch that far without the prospect of Champions League football next season, which remains a possibility through success in the Europa League. Irrespective, Parker believes the club should look domestically, rather than to the continent, when recruiting a new number this summer.

“I would look at Liam Delap. I don’t think [the price] would be excessive and you’re getting a wholehearted player with quality. He’s had a good football education at Man City, he’s had a great season for a struggling team,” the Premier League winning defender reveals.

Deadly Delap

Delap, 22, has scored 12 times for Ipswich in 32 league games, while providing another two assists. He’s also demonstrated a well-rounded game, capable of occupying defenders and holding up the ball, or spinning in behind and progressing play through his impressive ball-carrying skills.

Given the Tractor Boys have scored even less than United this season, 12 goals represents an impressive return for a striker playing in a struggling side in his first season at this level; especially given his potential competitors at Old Trafford have combined for half that amount.

The Englishman’s form has put the country’s top sides on red-alert with Delap’s contract at Portman Road containing a £30 million release clause if (when) Ipswich are relegated. As a result, “half of the Premier League” are reported to be chasing the 22-year-old’s signature this summer, with United believed to be right at the front of the queue – a move Parker supports.

“Liam Delap is the one I would go with. He’s hungry to prove a point, hungry to play for a big club. Everyone’s been talking about him, but the way he’s conducted himself tells me this lad is decent.

“He gives everything when he plays; yes he might be playing to get himself out of the club, but he still plays like he needs his teammates. He’s not trying to do it all on his own.”

Furthermore, Parker believes Delap has the personality to wear the Red shirt, in a way which both Hojlund and Zirkzee have often looked overwhelmed by. “It’s a great time to go to Manchester United if you’ve got a fire in your belly and a big heart, because you can go and prove yourself – it’s a bigger story, and [Delap] has got that about him,” the 61-year-old concludes.

Given INEOS have initiated a recruitment shift towards younger players with more affordable transfer fees and wage packets, a £30 million raid on a (soon to be) relegated side for a 22-year-old homegrown goal-scorer with the physical and mental qualities to thrive in English football appears a no-brainer.

United’s former flying fullback certainly thinks so anyways.

United hit unexpected jackpot as unique clause in former star’s deal is triggered by crucial 2-1 win – BBC

Manchester United have received a small financial boost following Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League due to a clause in the deal which saw Hannibal Mejbri swap Old Trafford for Turf Moor last year.

Mejbri, 22, brought an end to a five-year career in Manchester last summer when he joined Burnley in a £9.5 million move, having initially joined the Red Devils from Monaco in 2019.

The Tunisian midfielder was one of the most highly-rated prospects in the United academy with widespread hope at the club he would establish himself as a permanent member of the first-team.

However, Mejbri failed to build on an impressive start to the 2023/24 season under Erik ten Hag and fell down the pecking order under the Dutchman, eventually joining Sevilla on loan in January for the second half of the campaign.

And as INEOS implemented a comprehensive overhaul of a bloated senior squad in the summer, United and Mejbri both decided a fresh chapter was the correct step for the 22-year-old’s career, with Burnley moving quickly to offer a permanent exit.

A 50% sell-on clause was stipulated in the deal, as has become standard practice for any young players departing Old Trafford in recent years.

But an additional clause was also included, entitling United to an additional payment should Burnley gain promotion back into the Premier League, having been relegated the previous year.

And with the Clarets’ crucial 2-1 victory over Sheffield United last night, they clinched automatic promotion – along with Leeds United – as they moved eight points clear of the Blades with only two games of the season remaining.

Mejbri has played a “key role” in this successful promotion push for Scott Parker’s side, playing 35 times for Burnley, scoring once and providing three assists.

His trademark hard-running style and relentless pressing has helped Parker establish one of the most defensively strong units in all of Europe, with Burnley having lost only two times and conceded just 15 goals – a truly staggering feat across 44 games.

Executives at Turf Moor will be more than happy the clause in Mejbri’s contract has been triggered as it constitutes a successful transfer and even more successful season for the club.

Man Utd benefit from six-figure sum re Burnley promotion as a result of clause in Hannibal Mejbri transfer.

— Simon Stone (@sistoney67) April 22, 2025

Tweet: “Man Utd benefit from six-figure sum re Burnley promotion as a result of clause in Hannibal Mejbri transfer.”

BBC Sport reporter Simon Stone reveals United will receive a “six-figure sum” due to this clause, though he does not specify the exact amount, which could range from £100,000 to just under a million.

But with the economic situation at Old Trafford a fraught one, any additional income is welcome with INEOS seeking to arm Ruben Amorim with a significant war chest this summer, despite the club’s limited finances.

Man Utd: Red Devils find ‘preferred’ Onana replacement as ‘envoy’ is sent with Euro giants ‘open to release’

Man Utd are hoping to bring Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window, according to reports.

The Red Devils came minutes away from an almost certain exit from the Europa League last week after ten-man Lyon took a two-goal lead in extra-time to make it 4-2 on the night and 6-4 on aggregate.

However, a stunning comeback saw Man Utd score three goals in seven minutes through Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire to secure their place in the Europa League semi-finals.

Onana remained in the spotlight for the Red Devils after conceding four goals against the French opposition with the Cameroon international reinstated into the starting XI following Ruben Amorim’s decision to drop him for their 4-1 defeat to Newcastle.

The former Ajax and Inter Milan goalkeeper was at fault for both of Lyon’s goals in the first leg and now there are further reports that he could leave this summer.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently gave an update on the situation surrounding Onana’s future at Man Utd.

Romano said on his YouTube channel: “For Onana in general, the situation can be one to watch in the summer transfer window because I told you in January that Onana signed with a new agent. The agent is Fali Ramadani, Lian Sports, so he decided to trust Ramadani to take care of his future in January.

“There is interest from the Saudi Pro League since he was at Inter, but he preferred a move to Man Utd. He had this dream to play for Manchester Man Utd. Now I can say that the interest from the Saudi Pro League is still there for Onana. So there is still strong interest.”

The Athletic‘s David Ornstein also gave his thoughts on Onana after Amorim dropped the Cameroon international, he told NBC Sports: “It does raise questions about the future of Onana. He joined for £47.2 million in the summer of 2023, signing a five-year contract with the option of a further 12 months.

“Unless somebody came in with huge money for him, the hopes of United selling him for a profit are almost non-existent, and that would mean a PSR – Profitability and Sustainability – loss, which could rule out the possibility of selling him.

“He has switched agents in recent months. That was meant for a new contract to improve terms, but he may not have to look at trying to shift his player. And this would not have been expected for Manchester United. It wasn’t on the agenda, another goalkeeper.”

And now Portuguese newspaper Correio de Manha claim that Porto goalkeeper Costa is now a ‘firm bet’ for Man Utd in the summer transfer window.

The report adds that that Costa has now emerged as the Red Devils’ ‘preferred goalkeeper to replace Onana’ and they have ‘already begun monitoring the Portuguese international’.

Correio de Manha continues:

‘The Porto goalkeeper is on the radar of several English clubs, namely the two Manchester giants. United, led by Ruben Amorim, are doing some field work and have sent envoys to Dragão to watch Diogo Costa in action in the match against Famalicao.’

The report explains that Porto could be open to a deal with the goalkeeper having a €75m release clause:

‘According to CM , André Villas-Boas is even open to releasing the ‘keeper’, but for a value very close to the termination clause and only after FC Porto participates in the Club World Cup, proof that the Porto leader believes it can be an important showcase for his players, who this season played in the Europa League.’

1 goal, 1 key pass, 1 shot off the post: United loanee runs bitter rivals ragged but suffers brutal last-minute defeat

Marcus Rashford scored at the Etihad to continue his fine form against Manchester City but ultimately could not help Aston Villa avoid defeat in a crucial match for Champions League qualification next season.

Unai Emery opted to start Rashford, 27, up front as the Spanish manager continued to back the Manchester United loanee over English teammate Ollie Watkins, despite Villa’s number nine expressing his frustration at being left out from the side last weekend.

However, it was immediately proved an astute decision as Rashford latched onto a good pass by Youri Tielemans after just 17 seconds to turn Ruben Dias inside out, before sending a left-footed shot past Stefan Ortega towards the City goal, only for it to strike the post.

Pep Guardiola’s side wasted no time in responding with Bernardo Silva turning home a deflected cross to put the Citizens 1-0 up in the 7th minute. But Villa retaliated just ten minutes later, courtesy of the intervention of VAR, as Jacob Ramsey was judged to have been fouled by Dias in the City box and a penalty was awarded.

The move which led to Ramsey receiving the ball was driven by incisive play by Rashford down the left-hand side, with the 27-year-old forward finding great joy throughout the game by drifting away from the middle towards the wings.

Rashford duly stepped up in the absence of regular penalty-taker Watkins and coolly slot the ball past Ortega’s left to score his fourth goal for Villa since making the switch from Old Trafford in the January transfer window.

Interestingly, all four of these goals have come away from Villa Park with Rashford yet to find the net for his adopted side at home. But he has also produced six assists for the Birmingham side, underscoring the versatility as an attacker which led Emery to implore his club to target the United academy graduate in the first place.

It was also the fourth goal Rashford has scored at the Etihad with a total of six strikes in his career against City. The Mancunian forward has only scored more against one other opponent, Leicester City, proving the battle lines run hard for the local boy.

Rashford was a constant menace to Guardiola’s side in the first half with his blistering pace in behind a constant thorn in their backline, particularly for Dias.

The second half was a quieter affair for the 27-year-old, though he did come close to scoring after running across Dias and dancing around Ortega, only to be forced too far wide with the angle proving impossible to find the back of the net from.

Rashford was withdrawn in the 75th minute for Watkins. In commentary for Sky Sports, Gary Neville described the United loanee as a “real threat” who could “easily have had three or four on a different night”.

The City defence were likely to be relieved to see the forward depart and the Citizens grew into the game more after this point. And this change in momentum ultimately proved the downfall for Villa as Matheus Nunes produced a last-minute winner to gift City a vital 2-1 win and lift them to third in the Premier League table, while the Villains fell to 7th.

Emery could easily have brought Watkins on up front while shifting Rashford out to the left in order to ramp up the pressure on a beleaguered City defence. Instead, the Spaniard, as has often been the case in his career, opted for the more defensive choice, and it backfired.

Rashford finished the match with a goal, one effort against the woodwork, six out of seven successful passes, one key pass and one cross (Sofa Score). But it was the sense of panic he produced in the City defence which was his most impactful contribution; and one which his manager failed to capitalise upon.

Hammer blow to United’s transfer plans as €75m target agrees to join fiercest rivals – report

Porto goalkeeper and Manchester United target Diogo Costa has reportedly agreed to join cross-town rivals Manchester City in the summer.

United are believed to be eyeing reinforcements in the goalkeeping department amidst uncertainty over the long-term future of Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.

Onana has endured a rough season, with his latest errors coming in the Europa League clash against Lyon, which ultimately saw him dropped to the bench for United’s Premier League meeting with Newcastle United. Bayindir stepped in for the Cameroonian but didn’t fare much better.

Bayındır conceded four goals from just six shots on target and was at fault for Newcastle’s fourth goal at St James’ Park, capping off a disappointing outing for the United goalkeeper.

Despite returning for the second leg and playing a role in the Red Devils’ dramatic 5-4 win that secured a spot in the semi-finals, Onana’s future at the club remains uncertain. His error-strewn performances since arriving in 2023, coupled with the absence of a reliable alternative at Old Trafford, continue to cast doubt over his long-term role.

There have been suggestions that a permanent departure could be on the horizon in the coming months, with the 29-year-old goalkeeper continuing to be linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.

Meanwhile, United have been mentioned to be looking at potential replacements including James Trafford (Burnley), Lucas Chevalier (Lille), Senne Lammens (Royal Antwerp), Bart Verbruggen (Brighton and Hove Albion) and of course, Costa.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Ruben Amorim wants Costa to replace Onana.

It was subsequently noted that City were also interested in the Porto shot-stopper and would compete with United for his signature.

Now, Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna has revealed that Costa has agreed to join the reigning Premier League champions.

According to Aouna, Costa has “given the initial green light” to City and wants to become the latest addition to Pep Guardiola’s ranks. He has accepted the project.

Talks remain ongoing between all parties to try and thrash out a deal. Costa’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is understood to be “pushing” to strike an agreement.

Spurs plotting blockbuster summer raid on United for in-form attacker – report

Marcus Rashford seems to have re-found his mojo since his January loan move to Aston Villa with the Manchester United loanee managing three goals and six assists from 16 appearances in all competitions.

The Mancunian had struggled for gametime under Ruben Amorim with the head coach far from happy with his application in training. This led to the Englishman giving an interview in which he claimed he wanted to leave his boyhood club.

There was no way back for the Carrington graduate after this and he ended up linking up with Unai Emery at Villa. The Birmingham-based outfit even have the option of making his loan move permanent for £40 million.

Despite having his new boss’ trust and making a comeback into the England national team, the 27-year-old remains keen to move out of Villa with Barcelona seen as his dream destination.

Rashford could leave Villa

However, the Catalan giants have financial troubles of their own and had failed to make a move in January and it remains to be seen if they can satisfy United’s demands while paying the England international his humongous wages.

There is no way back for the Englishman at United with INEOS keen to sell him to raise funds for Amorim to utilise during the summer window.

This could potentially allow other teams to try and hijack the deal and as per Football Transfers, Tottenham Hotspur could use this opportunity to enter the race.

They have earmarked Rashford as Heung-min Son’s successor and want to try their luck should Villa opt against signing him permanently.

Spurs want Rashford

“Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Marcus Rashford this summer if Aston Villa decide against purchasing him on a permanent deal, FootballTransfers understands.

“The England international is expected to leave Manchester United during the upcoming summer transfer window and we have been told that Spurs are eyeing a potential deal as they look to sign a replacement for Heung-min Son.”

Interestingly, Spurs were interested in a January deal as well but opted to pursue a loan deal for Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel instead.

United will have no problems with the interest Rashford is generating and a bidding war will suit them just fine given the versatile attacker’s homegrown status which means his fee will count as pure profit.

Amorim demands United to sign Newcastle superstar, deal would send shockwaves across Europe – report

Manchester United’s midfield is expected to bear a completely different look once the new season kicks off with plenty of changes expected.

Christian Eriksen, who started the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, is no longer the force he was earlier and his contract is up in the summer and the Red Devils have no plans of offering him a contract extension.

Casemiro is another who could make way despite his resurgence in form. While Ruben Amorim trusts the Brazilian, INEOS is keen to get rid of his humongous wages.

Kobbie Mainoo’s future is also up in the air with the club and Carrington graduate yet to agree a new contract extension with the likes of Chelsea, and Inter Milan circling even though the midfield ace would prefer a move abroad.

Midfield reinforcements

All this means the head coach will require more than one midfielder in the summer and Teamtalk have thrown two blockbuster names into the mix.

They have claimed that the Portuguese tactician is a huge fan of Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes while Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace has been a long-term target for the Red Devils.

The Brazilian has four goals and eight assists this season and he can operate both as a defensive midfielder and central midfielder.

The England international has excelled since coming back from injury, and plenty of clubs are looking at him including Real Madrid, which goes to show how difficult it will be to land him next summer.

“Manchester United are understood to have drawn up a dream two-man shopping list to reinforce their central midfield this summer, with both Bruno Guimaraes and Adam Wharton topping their wishlist

“And while Amorim’s admiration for Newcastle star Guimaraes has become apparent, it would require a significantly large investment and quite likely one beyond what they can afford.

Blockbuster double deal

“Sources though have confirmed to TEAMtalk that Wharton has been a key target for United for several months and he is another player highly appreciated by Amorim.

“However, just as in the case of Guimaraes, Man Utd will face stiff competition for Wharton as well – not to mention a sizeable transfer fee to boot.”

With the 20-time English league champions in desperate need of goals, rumours have swirled over potential deals for Victor Osimhen and Matheus Cunha in recent days.

It remains to be seen if the club can afford either one of the aforementioned midfield duo given the financial constraints INEOS are operating with. Winning the Europa League and selling multiple stars could potentially change that picture.

Man Utd ‘intend’ to pay £92m ‘as quickly as possible’ with Cunha transfer ‘very close’

Manchester United want to complete two signings worth a combined £92.5million ‘as quickly as possible’ in the summer, according to reports.

Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim is keen to bolster his attack and has set his sights on Wolves’ Matheus Cunha and Ipswich Town youngster Liam Delap.

Both players have been excellent in the 2024/25 Premier League and are expected to leave their clubs at the end of the campaign.

Cunha has helped Wolves stay above the relegation zone for the majority of the season, while Delap’s 12 league goals haven’t been enough to keep Ipswich afloat.

Wolves recently welcomed the Brazilian back from suspension and won 1-0 away to Man Utd on Sunday thanks to a Pablo Sarabia goal.

Signing a new striker has to be Amorim’s priority given Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund’s notable struggles in 2024/25 and there is no doubt Cunha would represent a significant upgrade.

Capable of playing on either side of a No. 9 in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, Cunha’s versatility and make him a top transfer target for United.

Delap, meanwhile, has proven he can score in the Premier League, and for a poor team, which begs the question: how many could he net in a top team?

That question might not be answered immediately if he joins United considering they are 14th in the Premier League, but if they get their summer recruitment right, 2025/26 could be a positive season.

Winning the Europa League will be a huge boost financially with a big summer window planned, but losing to Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals or Tottenham or Bodø/Glimt in the final would require lots of first-team sales.

Regardless of the Europa uncertainty, United are planning their summer rebuild and have made Cunha and Delap their top two targets, though Amorim is also expected to target a centre-midfielder and wing-back.

According to the Daily Mail, the Red Devils are eager to sign the Premier League pair ‘as quickly as possible in the summer’.

Cunha has a £62.5million release clause in the Wolves contract he signed earlier this year and is not expected to depart for a penny less.

Meanwhile, Delap has a £30m relegation release clause and with Ipswich all but down, he is set to depart for that figure.

In a boost to Amorim, United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe ‘intends to trigger the release clauses’ and a deal to sign Cunha ‘is said to be very close’.

Amorim reportedly views the Wolves star as one of the two players behind his striker, while Delap is his ‘No. 1 target’, though the club are prepared to face ‘fierce competition’ for his signature.

It has previously been reported that every Premier League club – except Arsenal – want to sign the 22-year-old.

‘Another option’ for the Red Devils is Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and the club ‘could be persuaded’ to send Hojlund back to Italy in exchange for the £70m-rated striker.

Rio Ferdinand gives United star quick fix to snap out of slump and start firing on all cylinders again

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has advised Rasmus Hojlund to simplify his game in order to explode into life, after another tepid performance over the weekend.

Hojlund was poor again as United slipped to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. The low point of his disappointing performance came when he squandered a golden goalscoring chance, failing to convert after Alejandro Garnacho set him up perfectly.

After the match, Ruben Amorim was asked whether he had considered taking Hojlund out of the firing line, but the United head coach maintained that the striker needs to play through his struggles and regain form on the pitch.

Amorim also emphasised that the lack of goals is a team issue and not just down to Hojlund.

Hojlund’s tepid display against Vitor Pereira’s men saw Alan Shearer brand the Dane “a damaged player” and now, Ferdinand has weighed in on the debate.

Speaking on the Rio Present podcast, the six-time Premier League winner said, “He’s got to get hold of the winger and say ‘this is what I need. When you’re in these positions this is what I’d like.’”

“Let’s take it back. Put yourself in positions to show your best attributes. At the moment we’re seeing far too many of your weakest attributes. You need to free yourself up from any contact and start running.”

Ferdinand continued, “That’s the one big thing I would say to any player struggling for confidence. Strip it back, simplify and do what has got you there.”

Ex-United midfielder Owen Hargreaves added, “I think the moments you see him struggle are when his back is to play. So don’t put yourself in that spot all the time, spin.”

“The guy is one of the quickest players in Europe by the way. The problem is he gets caught all the time, he takes too many touches.”

Hargreaves argued that Hojlund should model his game on Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski.

United are back in action on Sunday when they go away to the Vitality to face Bournemouth.
