Manchester United Under-18s took a point in our match against Everton in a 4-4 draw at Finch Farm on Saturday morning.

Ray Robert gave the hosts the lead midway through the first half, after a strong United start.

The Reds pulled it back to 2-1 shortly before the half-time whistle through Jim Thwaites and Victor Musa, before a George Finney cross deflected into our net to send the two sides in level.

Gabriele Biancheri put Adam Lawrence’s side ahead on the other side of the interval. Two quick goals from Everton’s Malik Olayiwola then looked like clinching the win for the hosts, until Shea Lacey rescued a point in the final moments.

There was no stopping Jim Thwaites’ set-piece effort.

After a dominant start, Biancheri almost opened the scoring for Adam Lawrence’s side in the 14th minute with a curling effort, denied by the woodwork, but it was the hosts who took the lead 10 minutes later when Toffees striker Robert entered our penalty area from the left and squeezed a finish past the goalkeeper.

Shortly after, directly from a free-kick just outside of the penalty area, Thwaites gave Douglass Lukjanciks no chance to reach his curling effort struck neatly into the top-left corner.

Musa then gave the young Reds the lead for the first time in the game, hitting the same spot as Thwaites from a similar distance, in open play this time, to make the score 2-1.

We looked to be heading into the break with that one-goal advantage, when George Finney’s cross was deflected into our net moments before the half-time whistle, with the last touch possibly coming off James Overy.

After the restart, Samuel Lusale picked up a second ball from a Thwaites corner and struck it powerfully towards a crowded six-yard box. Unsure if it was heading for goal, Biancheri got an instinctive touch on the effort, claiming the Reds’ third and reinstating our lead.

Everton forward Olayiwola managed to intercept a William Murdock pass and slot home a finish just past the hour mark to level the game, before sending his side into the lead a few minutes later after collecting a rebounded ball and tapping into an empty net for the Toffees’ fourth.

Lawrence’s charges worked hard through the end of the game to try and find an equaliser, piling plenty of pressure on their opposite numbers, but it didn’t look like that last equaliser was coming.

But it finally arrived in the very last seconds of the game, when Lacey slalomed into the penalty area and found a gap to place his finish beyond Lukjanciks, securing a point for the young Reds in the nick of time.

Despite our valiant efforts, Manchester City’s 4-3 win against Derby County means we cannot overtake them at the top of the table.

A hard-fought draw at Finch Farm.

Mazraoui: He is a great example

ManUtd.com reporter Adam Marshall at Old Trafford.

Saturday 26 April 2025 09:00

Noussair Mazraoui believes one of his Manchester United team-mates has perfectly illustrated an ability to adapt to Ruben Amorim’s tactical system.

Ahead of Sunday’s away game at Bournemouth, the Morocco international spoke with Premier League Productions and was asked if he felt the players were getting used to the way Amorim wants to play.

Nous provided a telling answer, replying: “Yes, I think a big example of that is Leny [Yoro]. How he started off as this left centre-back and how he is doing now.

“He has really improved. The way he is taking the ball, he is carrying the ball a lot more, it’s a little bit where we want to go and end eventually.”

Leny Yoro has been getting better and better this season.

Yoro had a delayed start to his competitive United career, after picking up an injury in pre-season, but has acquitted himself well since making his Premier League debut in December, at Arsenal.

The Frenchman scored his first goal for the club in the recent Europa League quarter-final away tie at Lyon and is continuing to look a shrewd investment for the future.

Mazraoui, meanwhile, made his 50th appearance for the Reds, since signing from Bayern Munich, in the home game with Wolves last time out.

He admitted he likes to play both as part of the three-man defence and as a wing-back, after showing his versatility throughout his maiden campaign in Manchester.

“I think I have great qualities in defence, as well as in attacking, so I think right centre-back suits me at this moment really well,” he explained. “But I like to play wing-back from time to time, just to really attack, you know.”

Man Utd chief ‘leaving’ after ‘declining’ Ratcliffe ‘offer’ for new ‘role’ amid ‘meeting’ for more cuts

According to reports, Manchester United’s director of scouting is ‘leaving’ the Premier League after ‘declining an offer’ from INEOS.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe‘s takeover of the Premier League giants was initially met with overwhelming positivity as it took control away from the Glazer family, but his popularity has quickly evaporated.

The British billionaire has felt it was necessary to sanction a huge cost-cutting programme to balance the books at Man Utd.

Some cuts have been deemed too harsh as there have been mass redundancies, axing payments to club legends and scrapping free lunches for staff.

There have already been huge changes at Old Trafford, but loads of work still needs doing and more staff redundancies are expected in the coming months.

Now, a report from The Athletic reveals ‘director of scouting Steve Brown is leaving the club as part of wide-ranging changes to the recruitment strategy at Old Trafford’.

Brown is said to be  ‘the highest-profile member of the department to depart United amid the restructuring’ and more staff exits are coming.

‘The number of scouts employed by United will fall significantly as the second redundancy drive of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s reign kicks into action.

‘Meetings involving human resources are being arranged for next week at Carrington, where those at risk of losing their jobs will be informed.

‘United have a global army of around 80 scouts and Ratcliffe has made it clear he feels this number is too high.

‘Staffing levels in this area had already been reduced from a couple of years ago when United employed 140 scouts — 50 full-time and 90 part-time.’

The report also claims Brown turned down an ‘alternative role’ to stay on at Man Utd.

‘He informed scouts of his decision in an email, explaining he had declined the offer of an alternative role from technical director Jason Wilcox and director of recruitment Christopher Vivell due to his experience and career timing.

‘Brown thanked his colleagues for their efforts and called United a “special place”. He will continue working until the end of June.

‘The end of April marks the point at which United need to announce intentions after chief executive Omar Berrada informed staff of a new wave of redundancies on February 24.

‘It is anticipated up to 200 people will lose their jobs, following on from the 250 cut last summer.’

Why Ruben cannot call end to Dalot’s season

Saturday 26 April 2025 08:00

Ruben Amorim can’t say that Diogo Dalot’s season is at an end, given the full-back’s hard-work ethic and determination to always be available.

Ruben revealed on Friday that Diogo had picked up a calf injury that would rule him out of United’s next few games.

With only a month of the campaign to go, there is surely some doubt about whether our reigning Players’ Player of the Year will be involved again before the summer.

But Dalot – who has missed just one outing in 2024/25, due to suspension – prides himself on his consistency, something Amorim touched upon in our pre-match interview, which you can watch and read below…

Will Ruben rotate at Bournemouth? Video

Will Ruben rotate at Bournemouth?

AMORIM Q&A | The boss is asked about Dalot’s injury and how the Bilbao trip will impact team selection at Bournemouth…

Ruben, you’ve had the rare benefit of having a week between the games. Has that allowed the squad to recover not only physically but emotionally from last week?
“Yeah, it was important. Not just that, but to improve as a team – more time to work on the pitch, more time to see videos and analyse not just the last game but the other ones that we didn’t have the time [to look at properly]. To prepare this game, to prepare the next one: that is massive for us, so we are focused on the game on Sunday.”

Yeah, it’s Bournemouth away next, so how’s the squad looking for that one?
“Fine. We had a issue with Dalot, but the rest are recovered and we need to face this game at the top level because they are a very good team. They are fighting for European football and we need to improve in the Premier League. I think we deserved more in the last game. We need to improve the way we score goals. I think we are defending better, so we have a lot to play [for] in this moment.”

It’s obviously a blow to lose Diogo but how much is he working hard to try to get back?
“You know Diogo, he did all the games and then he had that issue. You can’t say that Diogo is out until the end of the season because Diogo will work hard, to help us in the last games.”

You’ll obviously have one eye on the Athletic Club first leg next week, but how much does that game come into your thinking when it comes to choosing the team?
“A little bit, to be honest, but I think that this game we need to be focused on just this game. We had this week to clean. I think the next one in the Premier League [Brentford] it is important for us to be careful. I think during the game we are going to see if there is any player that is tired or with something and try to manage that.”

We know how good Bournemouth can be, from the first game this season. What did you learn about them that day and have your thoughts on them changed since?
“The same as any other team in the Premier League. We are understanding better the way that football is played in this country. They have really good players in the offence, they play quite well and they are a team with a lot of pressure in the build-up of the opponent, so we expect that, especially in their home. But we are ready for that.”

Just finally, Europe is obviously a big focus for us now, but how important are these league games for us in terms of gaining that confidence and form?
“In this club, everything is important, as it should be. So we need to be focusing one game at a time and we need to win the game, not just because of the Europa League, but because we are Manchester United and we need to win more points.”

‘It’s a big chance to gain momentum’

0

Skip to Main NavigationSkip to content

Saturday 26 April 2025 08:00

Former Manchester United defender John O’Shea believes there is a great opportunity for Ruben Amorim to build momentum at the club by winning the Europa League in May.

It’s been a difficult season at Old Trafford, with the club struggling in the lower half of the Premier League table, but United will enter the final month of 2024/25 still dreaming of silverware.

Athletic Club stand between us and a final and they will be a significant obstacle, as the showpiece event takes place at the Basques’ San Mames home.

O’Shea thinks that, if we do defeat Ernesto Valverde’s side over two legs and go on to lift the trophy, it will make a huge difference going into the next campaign.

“He’s been really refreshing to see, because he obviously wears his heart on his sleeve,” Sheasy said, when asked to judge Amorim’s first six months in the head-coach role.

“You can see how passionate he is, and also how honest he is in his interviews before and after the games as well, and there’s no hiding place.

“He’s obviously worked at a high level, and now he’s come into the intensity of the Premier League, which I’m sure would have taken him a little bit of time to adjust to.

120 in 20: United v Lyon Video

120 in 20: United v Lyon

120 IN 20 | One week on, these extended highlights of United v Lyon are still a must-watch…

“But now you can see, hopefully if we can get to this European final, it’s a chance for the team to get a bit of early success under his stewardship.

“If he can get that, you can also get a lot of momentum behind it too.

“Listen, Manchester United will always be an attractive proposition, but we have to face the reality: there’s more competition now in the transfer market for other players.

“So when you’re winning trophies, that always attracts players.”

Hopefully any new signings can match the impact of the three incomings from last summer that Sheasy went on to name.

The Irishman was renowned for his versatility during his playing career – famously playing in every position, including goalkeeper – and it’s something he sees in Noussair Mazraoui too.

“Right from the off, his flexibility and adaptability has been very helpful to the team,” he added.

“He’s showed really good qualities defensively, especially 1v1, and also in terms of attacking, he’s been able to contribute as well.

“I think he’s been a real positive.”

The 43-year-old also picked out Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro as a pair of defenders who we are beginning to see the best of, having adjusted to English football.

“I think Matthijs, in fairness to him, obviously he picked up a bit of an injury recently, but he was really starting to show some improved form and show that quality that everyone knows he possesses.

“I think it was just a matter of time really, with that consistency. He was going to find that level and it’s getting to know new team-.mates as well. Settling into the English Premier League can always take a few months.

“With Leny, we’ll have no worries about him in terms of what he’s going to develop into, and he’s going to be an excellent player.

“You can see not only now, but, for the future, I think he’ll be part of Manchester United’s defence for numerous years to come, whether it be a back three or back four or whatever, whatever the manager wants to play.”

John was speaking at a United Foundation event at Ulster University, to showcase its ongoing outreach work across Derry-Londonderry and mark a new partnership with the International Fund for Ireland (IFI).

“There is a possibility”: United have lined up sensational young superstar in case they fail to land PL ace – report

Manchester United are after a creative attacking midfielder in the summer after Ruben Amorim saw the lack of service being provided to his strikers this season.

Currently, the head coach does not have the right profiles for his 3-4-3 system with winger Alejandro Garnacho forced to play regularly there with Amad still sidelined.

Midfield difficulties have forced the Portuguese tactician to play Bruno Fernandes as a deep-lying playmaker and in the summer, an appropriate solution is likely to be sought.

As per recent reports, the Red Devils seem favourites for Matheus Cunha of Wolverhampton Wanderers with his versatility, eye for a goal and his killer pass seen as the perfect fit for Amorim.

Cunha favourite to land up at Old Trafford

With Wolves open to an installment-based deal, INEOS seem to be in a hurry to acquire their man. But as The Peoples Person relayed recently, Arsenal are long-term fans of the Brazilian and could try and hijack the move.

Which is why the 20-time English league champions have not kept all their eggs in the same basket with Teamtalk revealing Xavi Simons could become a concrete target in case of any complications.

The team from Old Trafford have been long-term admirers of the Dutchman and the only reason he still has not joined is because of his price tag.

“Man Utd’s priority this summer is to sign a new striker and add a number ten. The main two priorities are Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap, with the club trying to do both those deals early, regardless of their tight PSR position.

Simons could become a target

“There is a possibility that Man Utd could switch their attention to Simons if Cunha doesn’t come off, and the advantage of Simons is he can play left or right wing, or through the centre.”

The RB Leipzig ace has 10 goals and six assists this season and could potentially cost suitors as much as €80 million, more than the package required to land Cunha.

The Brazil international is also Premier League-proven, which ranks highly in INEOS’ eyes and which explains why United are after the Wolves talisman instead of the ex-Paris Saint-Germain star.

Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford is a much more cost-effective option on the club’s radar. As things stand, Cunha seems destined for Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes over Mo Salah for Player of the Year? Sorry, what?

It’s been a dull Premier League season. We get it. There has been no Premier League title race, no Premier League relegation battle and no Golden Boot battle with Mo Salah scoring a ludicrous 27 goals.

Salah has long had the PFA award sewn up and the FWA award will surely follow. Unless of course you are contrary as f*** and desperately seek engagement.

Which is how we get here…

Has any player had a more profound influence on his team this season than Bruno Fernandes?

The answer is no and that’s why he gets my Player of the Year vote.

Column: 👇👇👇
https://t.co/Gp9rrb7FqY

— Ian Ladyman (@Ian_Ladyman_DM) April 24, 2025

This is the Football Editor of the Daily Mail. Now everybody is entitled to their opinion – and we are entitled to call it absolutely f***ing ridiculous – but he has opened his tweet with a question that has an alternative answer so very obvious that it feels like there is no other explanation than he is just being a d***.

Can there be an influence more ‘profound’ than logging 45 Premier League goal involvements as your team wins the actual title at a canter?

Apparently the answer is that yes, it is more ‘profound’ to be the very best player in a really sh*t team.

Now Mediawatch likes Bruno Fernandes and feels like his attitude gets an unfair press, but crowning him Player of the Year in a season when Manchester United are 14th in the Premier League table would embarrass the f*** out of him. We are pretty sure he would be a) confused and b) devastated that this has been committed to print.

Here’s how the madness begins…

‘The winner of the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year award tends to come from teams who win the Premier League. This has been the case in seven of the last 10 seasons. Only once in that time – when Mo Salah won it playing for fourth-placed Liverpool in 2018 – has it escaped the hands of the top two.

‘This season that should change. The most influential footballer in the Premier League has been Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United and he already has my vote.’

It ‘should’ change, should it? It ‘should’ change in the season when there has been possibly the most obvious winner in the Premier League’s entire history? This is nothing short of lunacy.

‘He is not a popular footballer outside of Old Trafford, but then how many United players are? United supporters continue to wear their ABU – Anyone but United – moniker as a badge of honour and with reason.’

Hmmmm. We’re not sure the ABUs complained when Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo won awards in the 2000s. Could that be – and this might blow some minds – because they were the very best players playing for the very best team?

Nobody thinks Bruno Fernandes being Footballer of the Year is ludicrous because he plays for Manchester United; it’s ludicrous because he plays for this Manchester United, who are sh*t, while Liverpool and particularly their Egyptian winger have been bloody marvellous.

‘Fernandes has had his faults for sure and I have written vehemently about them before, specifically in the context of his role as United captain. The 30-year-old still has occasional problems with his temperament and could certainly wave his hands around a little less when things go against him.

‘But Luis Suarez has won this award before. So has Roy Keane. It’s not a prize handed out to choir boys. It’s about football.’

Luis Suarez won in 2013/14 when he won the Golden Boot and was – again, this feels important – the best player in the Premier League; Roy Keane won when he captained Manchester United to yet another Premier League.

Again, nobody thinks Bruno Fernandes being Footballer of the Year is ludicrous because he has a poor temperament; it’s ludicrous because he plays for this Manchester United, who are sh*t, while Liverpool and particularly their Egyptian winger have been bloody marvellous.

There are a f*** of a lot of straw men being destroyed here when there is a very real curly-haired, smiling Egyptian winger with his arms in the air.

‘United are 14th in the Premier League and have broken the kind of club records nobody wants. But where would they be without their best player?’

Maybe 15th? Brentford might have been a couple of places lower than 11th without Bryan Mbeumo; shall we hand him an award too?

‘Bruno Fernandes has been the most influential player in the Premier League this season.

‘Mohamed Salah has been exceptional, but benefits from being in a side set up to suit his needs.’

It’s tricky to even lightly grasp the logic here, but is Ladyman arguing that awards should only be given to players who are playing in poor teams? Phil Foden, Erling Haaland, give back the gongs you thought you earned by being the best player in the Premier League. You have not truly earned them.

‘It’s not just about goals. It’s about big goals and big moments. It’s about contributions that shape and change games of football. It’s about driving a team forward.’

‘Big goals and big moments’, you say? Shame then, that Fernandes has not scored a single winner in the Premier League this season. Not one. His penalty strike against Manchester City in December was the equaliser that sparked a victory but in the Premier League, there have been no ‘big goals and big moments’. Fernandes has shone in the Europa League but so has Kasper Høgh and there ain’t no f***er suggesting he should win the Ballon d’Or.

‘Most will disagree with me,’ writes Ladyman. Damn right. Because you’re wrong.

He finds 427 different ways of saying the Footballer of the Year award should not go to the actual Footballer of the Year (LOL), but does find room to write: ‘He has been consistent in appearances – missing just one Premier League game – and goals. After a slow start – he didn’t register his first goal until the end of October – he has never gone more than five games without scoring.’

He does take penalties, Ian.

‘Fernandes is not a centre forward and plays for a team averaging just one goal (1.15 to be precise) per game in the Premier League.’

And Mo Salah is not a centre-forward and has scored 36% of his club’s goals this season while Fernandes has scored 21% of his team’s goals.

But it almost feels ridiculous to cite actual statistics when really, the only argument should be that THIS IS ACTUAL LUNACY.

United legend reignites bitter feud with old rival as he braces for shocking career change

Manchester United legend Patrice Evra is set for a surprising career shift into mixed martial arts and he’s eyeing former rival Luis Suarez as his first opponent.

Evra will make his mixed martial arts debut at PFL Europe Paris at the Accor Arena on 23 May.

He has been training in combat sports since 2016 alongside PFL Champion and close friend Cédric Doumbé.

Evra said in a statement, “You guys should know by now, I love this game too! I’ve performed on the world’s biggest stages, won every major trophy in football, but PFL Europe Paris will be an incredibly special night for me.”

“I’ve been training alongside the best in the world for years, and they’ll also tell you I’m ready for this. I’m going to put on a show at the Accor Arena on 23 May, so come watch the spectacle.”

PFL Chief Executive Officer Pete Murray remarked, “I’m told he loves this game as much as us, and we’ll find out on 23 May! We’re incredibly excited to have the superstar that is Patrice Evra fight under the PFL banner, as we’re all about exciting match-ups and making history.”

“I can’t tell you how excited Patrice has been putting this together, but I think you’re going to see it at the Accor Arena. Paris, we’re coming to put on another historic evening of MMA, don’t miss out.”

With training for his MMA debut already underway, Evra’s first opponent remains unconfirmed, but the former United star has made it clear who he’d like to face – Suarez.

Evra wrote on X, “BREAKING: I’m officially training for my first fight with PFL Europe. They will pick my opponent…”

“They asked who I wanna face. I said: Luis Suárez. I’ll pay out of pocket. He can even bite me.”

BREAKING: I’m officially training for my first fight with @PFLEurope. They will pick my opponent…
They asked who I wanna face. I said:
Luis Suárez.

I’ll pay out of pocket.
He can even bite me.

— Patrice Evra (@Evra) April 25, 2025

Evra has stirred up an old rivalry, revisiting the infamous incident from October 2011 when he was racially abused by the Uruguayan striker during a fiery Premier League clash.

Suarez was accused of using “insulting words” toward the United star, including remarks referencing the colour of Evra’s skin. Suarez was found guilty and the FA slapped him with an eight-game ban after a two-month investigation and a six-day hearing into the incident.

United walk away from blockbuster deal of the summer owing to dream target’s ludicrous demands – report

Manchester United are hunting for a ruthless goalscorer in the summer to replace Rasmus Hojlund, who has let Ruben Amorim down big time.

The Dane has managed a meagre three goals in the Premier League and his inability to find the back of the net has been a major reason behind the Red Devils being 14th in the English top-flight.

What the head coach ideally wanted was a reunion with his Sporting CP protege Viktor Gyokeres but the Swede wants to win trophies and play in the Champions League and hence turned down the prospect of a move to Old Trafford.

As a result, the club gravitated towards Victor Osimhen, who has been on fire for loan outfit Galatasaray. Plenty of reports have even stated that the Nigerian is close to agreeing a move to Manchester.

Osimhen wage demands

The club feel he is a better fit than Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap but his wage demands have meant the 20-time English league champions are finally ready to move on from him.

It is well known at this point that INEOS are trying to clear their bloated wage bill and currently, they do not have the finances to land the Napoli ace.

“Some figures at the club remain convinced the Nigeria international, who is on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, is a better fit as they seek a huge upturn in goal output next season.

“GMS sources have been told that Manchester United discovered their pursuit of Osimhen was more complicated than initially anticipated when they explored the possibility of striking a deal over the past week, with funds being a significant stumbling block as Amorim aims to strengthen his attacking options.

Osimhen no longer a target

“Manchester United have walked away from completing a deal for Osimhen after it became clear that he was seeking a contract which would see him pocket in the region of £300,000-per-week, according to GMS sources, resulting in Amorim having to focus on attempting to sign the likes of Ipswich Town marksman Liam Delap instead.”

Chelsea have also moved on from the Nigeria international while the Naples outfit do not want to sell to direct rivals Juventus. Whether this opens up the possibility of a move later in the window remains to be seen.

For now, Osimhen’s wage demands mean a move to Saudi Arabia is seen as the most plausible destination with Al-Hilal reportedly keen on a move.

As a consequence, United are now desperately trying to sign Delap even though Chelsea feel confident of winning the race. An intriguing summer window awaits United fans.

Sixty years since United won the 1964/65 title

ManUtd.com reporter Adam Marshall at Old Trafford.

Saturday 26 April 2025 02:00

On this day 60 years ago, Manchester United effectively clinched the league title with a 3-1 victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford.

The Reds had been battling with Leeds United for the Division One title and the home win over the Gunners proved decisive.

Leeds finished their campaign with a 3-3 draw against relegated Birmingham City, matching our 61 points. Although we still had a game left to play, which we lost 2-1 at Aston Villa, our vastly superior goal difference ensured glory for Matt Busby’s men and, poignantly, a first title since the Munich Air Disaster.

Only a defeat by 19 goals or more at Villa Park would have seen United surrender top spot.

George Best pictured with his girlfriend after helping the Reds beat Arsenal in 1965.

Some of the 51,000+ crowd at the Theatre of Dreams invaded the pitch after the final whistle in celebration, with Denis Law taking much of the acclaim.

The Scotland striker was clearly suffering with a knee problem, that was heavily bandaged, but played through the pain and set up a seventh-minute opener for George Best. Law did well to feed Best and the winger’s shot deceived Jim Furnell in the Arsenal goal.

As news filtered through that Leeds were losing, the Reds doubled our lead, just before the hour mark. Nobby Stiles’s free-kick was met by Law and David Herd forced Furnell to push his effort against the bar. Law was alert to the rebound and converted in his inimitable style.

The nerves returned when Paddy Crerand hacked Joe Baker down inside the box. George Eastham netted at the second attempt, after Pat Dunne saved his initial penalty.

The tension was palpable but the fans could celebrate when Best’s 84th-minute corner evaded Furnell and Don Howe so Law pounced on the gift to make it 3-1 with his second of the afternoon.

Leeds had only been playing 10 men for virtually all of their game as Birmingham’s Alec Jackson picked up a shoulder injury, following a challenge by Terry Cooper, and had to leave the field.

Don Revie’s side roared back in a bid to overturn their three-goal deficit, with a penalty by ex-Red Jonny Giles and a Paul Reaney drive giving them hope. There was late drama when Jack Charlton, brother of Bobby of course, crashed Leeds level in the 88th minute, despite strong appeals for offside.

Thankfully, Birmingham held out, despite being down to nine fit men in the final seconds due to an injury to Malcolm Beard, and there was no second point earned by the Yorkshiremen.

A seventh league win on the trot had been enough for Busby’s side, barring any sort of catastrophe at Villa, and it was time to enjoy the moment.

“I am proud of these lads who have won the championship for Manchester United,” Busby told the Daily Express. “Every single one of them.

“It has been a long, hard road. It has been a long, hard season.

“There have been times when we just could not seem to find the blend. But, not for the first time, I have found that patience is a virtue.

“I have always felt, and I think I have always said, that we have the right quality of players at Old Trafford to win the title.

“It has been a splendid job of teamwork, from board to backroom boys, exactly as I have said of Leeds United, the team we have so narrowly beaten to it and who have had such a wonderful season.”
