Video: United youngster delivers stunning assist to secure his loan side promotion to League One

A number of Manchester United stars were in action for the loan clubs on Saturday, from the Premier League all the way to League 2.

Here’s a roundup of how these United loanees fared with their respective clubs.

Ethan Ennis (Doncaster Rovers)

Ethan Ennis came on from the bench and played 21 minutes for Doncaster Rovers as they secured a 2-1 victory over Bradford City, securing their promotion to League One.

The win ended a three-season stay for Doncaster in the fourth tier. Goals from Rob Street and Billy Sharp ensured Rovers got one over their Yorkshire rivals.

It was Ennis who assisted Sharp’s winning goal. The United youngster expertly headed the ball into the path of Sharp, who made no mistake as he sent the ball into the back of the net.

— Sky Bet League Two (@SkyBetLeagueTwo) April 26, 2025

During the limited time he was on the pitch, Ennis delivered all six passes he attempted (100% pass accuracy). One was of course a key pass, for Sharp’s strike. Ennis won two of the four ground duels he contested and put in two tackles.

Joe Hugill (Carlisle United)

Meanwhile, it was heartbreak for Joe Hugill and Carlisle United as their relegation was confirmed following a loss at the hands of Cheltenham.

The Cumbrians fell 3-2 at Cheltenham, and with Tranmere beating Crewe at home, the outcome at the EV Charger Points Stadium ultimately didn’t matter.

Carlisle boss and United legend Mark Hughes started Hugill on the bench, only bringing him on for the final minutes of the contest.

Hugill only completed one of the three passes he attempted (33% pass accuracy). He came out on top in two of the three ground duels he vied for. Hugill was required to contest two challenges in the air, and he won one.

Sonny Aljofree (Accrington Stanley)

Sonny Aljofree has been an important part of Accrington Stanley’s squad since arriving in the summer, although an injury earlier in the year slightly disrupted his season.

The defender made his long-awaited last week against Carlisle last week and impressed, so it was no surprise that he was named in Accrington’s starting XI to face Walsall on Saturday.

Aljofree played all 90 minutes as the visitors snatched a 1-0 win, courtesy of a superb Ben Woods volley in the 33rd minute of proceedings.

Aljofree made one clearance and one interception, while also registering five tackles. The 20-year-old was solid at the back, winning five of his eight ground duels and three of seven aerial battles.

He delivered 24 of the 34 passes he attempted  (71% pass accuracy). Aljofree managed to connect with just one of the five long balls he pinged.

It was certainly a top outing for the Plymouth-born footballer.

Rhys Bennett (Fleetwood Town)

Rhys Bennett came on for the final minutes of Fleetwood Town’s 2-0 victory over Newport County at Highbury Stadium.

Second-half strikes from Phoenix Patterson and Zech Medley were all Fleetwood needed to clinch the three points in their final home game of the season.

During the 11 minutes of action that he was afforded, Bennett blocked one shot and made three clearances. He only made four passes and went long on two occasions.

Jadon Sancho (Chelsea)

Jadon Sancho came on for Noni Madueke with 15 minutes remaining as Chelsea held on to their one-goal advantage against Everton.

Sancho completed his only attempted dribble, delivered both of his passes successfully, and won the sole ground duel he contested.

“I’m convinced…”: Treble winner claims misfiring ace can become “very, very valuable player” for Amorim

Rasmus Hojlund’s form is the biggest headache currently for Ruben Amorim with Manchester United struggling in front of goal.

The Dane has a mere three Premier League goals all season and his all-round play has been very disappointing, so much so that the head coach wants him gone.

But the embattled star still has an ardent supporter in fellow Dane and United legend Peter Schmeichel who has claimed that his compatriot has the mental strength to get through this difficult phase.

The former goalkeeper admitted that the 22-year-old is bereft of confidence, which explains the recent dismal displays.

Peter backs Rasmus

“The boy is very, very talented,” Schmeichel told PA news agency (via Yahoo). “He’s like every other player in that squad – of course short of confidence. Everyone. This is the big thing. Once you don’t win games, the confidence levels drop so it’s been a tough one.

“I mean, he will come through it. He’s so strong mentally. He will come through it. He’s got really, really good support from his family as well and I know what he can do.

“Hopefully there’s a bit of success left in this team, and you bring that into your break, you come back in a different frame of mind, new season.”

Even Amorim has pointed to the lack of service at times and the Treble winner agreed with this statement. Also, dumping the entire responsibility of goals on a youngster is not the way to go.

“He’s a number nine. Number nines need service. It’s not always been the case in this team. The service has not been great, but it’s been everyone so just singling out a player I think is wrong. Football is a team game, and you win and lose as a team. I know it’s cliches and all that, but that is the truth.

“When you have an off day – which when playing for Man United you shouldn’t really have too many of them – the rest of the team should be in such confident mood that they will carry you through.

Off-day for the entire team

“But this is not happening for anyone in this squad, and it’s just one of them. There’s too many things, too many changes in a short period of time.

“The good thing is that we still have the Europa League, so we can still dream about Champions League and if that happens it’s all going to change in the summer, and this is where we pin our hopes now.”

It was always a risk for the club to rely only on Hojlund instead of acquiring an elite striker to support him. Maybe that is what the club will finally do in the summer.

But Liam Delap seems the club’s top priority and having two youngsters might not be the way to go and INEOS could try and move the Denmark international on.

Talks of a move back to Italy including swap deal options are all on the table. The co-owners will now take the final call based on discussions with the head coach.

Amorim wants to build his side around 23yo Spaniard, United prepared to submit £43m opening bid – report

Manchester United are pondering making an offer for Villarreal midfielder Alex Baena, as per reports.

During Ruben Amorim’s first five months in charge of United, Bruno Fernandes has been his most pivotal player, playing a key role in the side’s build-up play as well as creating chances.

However, the overreliance on Fernandes has not worked well for the Red Devils, who find themselves void of any imagination or creativity when the Portuguese is not on the ball.

Amorim appears to recognise the issue and is reported to be keen on signing a new superstar.

According to Fichajes, the United head coach wants to make Baena “one of the cornerstones” of his project at Old Trafford.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the Premier League giants have enquired about the Villarreal talisman.

Now, the Spanish outlet suggest United are considering launching a €50 million (£42.88m) offer as they try to overtake Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich in the race for his signature.

The 23-year-old has primarily played as a left-winger under Marcelino this campaign but he is also capable of featuring as an attacking midfielder. Amorim is understood to be searching for versatile players and Baena fits his “vision perfectly”.

The prolific Spain international has been directly involved in 37 goals since the start of last season.

It is believed that Atletico have “taken the lead” having made initial contacts with the attacker’s entourage, but United have “already outlined their plan.”

Having said that, multiple reports in England have claimed the Mancunians are pushing to get the deal over the line for Wolverhampton Wanderers’  Matheus Cunha.

Since Baena and Cunha have a fairly similar profile and tend to move inside, it is difficult to see United use a big portion of their transfer budget on both stars.

Amorim makes dramatic U-turn on his United appointment despite worsening of crisis

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has insisted that he currently has no regrets about taking charge of the team in the middle of the season.

Amorim has endured an extremely difficult time since succeeding Erik ten Hag in November, with United currently languishing in 15th place in the Premier League table, having managed just six victories under the Portuguese coach.

The Europa League is the only thread holding United’s season together, and winning it would not only secure a major trophy but also offer a path back into the Champions League.

When United approached Amorim about the head coach role, the 40-year-old expressed a desire to finish the season with Sporting CP and take over in the summer, but he was pushed into making a swift decision after being told the job wouldn’t be kept open for him.

Now, ahead of United’s trip to the Vitality Stadium on Sunday, Amorim has changed tune and insists he has no regrets about assuming the Old Trafford hot seat.

He told reporters in the embargoed section of his press conference, “No regrets, not in this moment.”

“If you asked me like four months ago with all the problems, maybe you feel that feeling I should be stronger in starting in the beginning of the (next) season. But today I have a feeling that this is something that is going to help us in the future. We are suffering a lot here. There was a lot of frustration, a lot of suffering.”

“But I feel in this moment – maybe because it’s near the end (of the season) – this is the most important time maybe in the next few years. We are going to use all the information to prepare better the next few years, so no regrets. I think this is the top of what a coach can achieve, so I have no regrets at all.”

Amorim however insisted he harbours “a lot of regrets in small things” in the immediate aftermath of defeats, as he is desperate to win matches and repay the faith fans have placed in him.

“I think that is special, but I also know that people understand what we are trying to do. But I also know that this moment, without results and sometimes without performances, and still have that support from the fans will finish maybe in the next season.”

“I really appreciate that, but I know that in the future that is going to finish if we don’t get results.”

On approving the January exits of Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia, despite the risk of leaving himself short on options, Amorim stressed that the club was focused on the long-term plan.

“Big teams, when you get in one context it’s really hard. And then I understand that in January, and you are talking about Rashford and Antony, we lost these players and we didn’t bring new ones.”

“It was a risk, but I think that there are things here that are more important than to score 10 more goals this season. We are trying to do something that is more important. We can hurt the squad now, but in the future it’s going to help the club so I think we are in that path.”

Bournemouth vs. United kicks off at 14:00 BST.

“Key meeting next week”: United very close to landing sensational attacker perfect for Amorim’s system – report

Manchester United are in the process of finding the perfect goalscorers to add to their squad in the summer after a disappointing season from their current attackers.

Rasmus Hojlund has been the biggest failure with a mere three Premier League goals to his name. He can point to a lack of service, which Ruben Amorim is also keen to fix.

Matheus Cunha of Wolverhampton Wanderers is seen as the perfect signing, who can play all across the frontline and even up front.

The Brazilian has 17 goals in all competitions and six assists and added a goal and two assists to his tally on Saturday. And the Red Devils are eager to get the deal done as quickly as possible.

Cunha deal close

The Peoples Person had already relayed that confidence was growing that an agreement can be found and that a couple of meetings would make matters sure.

Now, Givemesport have added that both the club and the Wolves star’s camp will sit for a “key meeting” next week which is regarding personal terms.

United have already met Cunha’s camp and preliminary talks regarding wages and his position in Amorim’s plans have been discussed. Next week’s meeting should ensure personal terms are taken care of.

“Manchester United are set to hold talks with Matheus Cunha over financial terms next week, GIVEMESPORT sources have been informed.

“Cunha’s representatives have already held talks with the club over their project and plans for the 25-year-old.”

Key meeting next week

Club-to-club talks have not taken place but the 20-time English league champions already have an assurance that an installment-based deal can be agreed with the West Midlands outfit.

Thankfully for United, Cunha has no qualms about a potential lack of European football and is open to the idea of playing at Old Trafford.

His arrival could signal the end of Alejandro Garnacho’s time in Manchester. In case a deal does not pan out, Xavi Simons has been kept as a backup option.

Apart from the Brazil international, United also want Liam Delap of Ipswich Town but will have to battle Chelsea to win the race.

“A real positive”: Former United cult hero singles out three players who have kept the club afloat in trainwreck of a season

Former Manchester United defender John O’Shea has singled out Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro for praise despite the club’s shambolic season.

United are currently languishing in 15th position in the Premier League table, having suffered 15 losses and drawn eight. United have only won 10 games.

With only five top-flight matches left to play, a top-half finish appears to be an impossible task. Statistically, this campaign will be the worst in United’s history in the top flight.

However, O’Shea highlighted Mazraoui, De Ligt, and Yoro as three bright spots. The summer signings have adapted effortlessly to life at Old Trafford, making an immediate impact. Mazraoui, a consistent starter under Erik ten Hag, has maintained his key role under Ruben Amorim, much like De Ligt and Yoro, who have also settled in seamlessly.

Speaking at a United Foundation event at Ulster University, O’Shea told club media about Mazraoui, “Right from the off, his flexibility and adaptability has been very helpful to the team. He’s showed really good qualities defensively, especially 1v1, and also in terms of attacking, he’s been able to contribute as well.”

“I think he’s been a real positive.”

On De Ligt and Yoro, O’Shea remarked, “I think Matthijs, in fairness to him, obviously he picked up a bit of an injury recently, but he was really starting to show some improved form and show that quality that everyone knows he possesses.”

“I think it was just a matter of time really, with that consistency. He was going to find that level and it’s getting to know new team-.mates as well. Settling into the English Premier League can always take a few month.”

“With Leny, we’ll have no worries about him in terms of what he’s going to develop into, and he’s going to be an excellent player. You can see not only now, but, for the future, I think he’ll be part of Manchester United’s defence for numerous years to come, whether it be a back three or back four or whatever, whatever the manager wants to play.”

Despite how bad the season has been for United, they still have a chance of winning the Europa League. Doing so would not only guarantee the club silverware but also a spot in the Champions League.

O’Shea noted that lifting the Europa League could be the catalyst for success under Amorim.

“He’s [Amorim] been really refreshing to see, because he obviously wears his heart on his sleeve. You can see how passionate he is, and also how honest he is in his interviews before and after the games as well, and there’s no hiding place. He’s obviously worked at a high level, and now he’s come into the intensity of the Premier League, which I’m sure would have taken him a little bit of time to adjust to.”

“But now you can see, hopefully if we can get to this European final, it’s a chance for the team to get a bit of early success under his stewardship. If he can get that, you can also get a lot of momentum behind it too.”

“Listen, Manchester United will always be an attractive proposition, but we have to face the reality: there’s more competition now in the transfer market for other players. So when you’re winning trophies, that always attracts players.”

O’Shea enjoyed a fantastic spell at United, playing 394 times between 1999 and 2011. He helped the club to five Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup.

“You can’t say that…”: Amorim provides glimmer of hope regarding injured United star that will please fans

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has hinted at the possibility of Diogo Dalot returning to action before the end of the season.

On Friday, Amorim revealed that Dalot had suffered a calf injury that will keep him sidelined for the next few games and possibly the rest of the campaign.

Dalot has been a vital asset for United this season, featuring in 32 Premier League matches and a total of 51 games across all competitions. His versatility as a wing-back on either flank, combined with his consistent availability, has made him almost indispensable to the team.

In the matches leading up to his injury, Dalot displayed clear progress, demonstrating a growing grasp of the wing-back position within Amorim’s system.

Ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Bournemouth, Amorim sat down with club media and addressed Dalot’s fitness. The 40-year-old coach revealed that he can’t completely state that the defender will be back before the season concludes, citing his work ethic and dedication to his physical conditioning.

Amorim said, “We had a issue with Dalot, but the rest are recovered and we need to face this game at the top level because they are a very good team. They [Bournemouth] are fighting for European football and we need to improve in the Premier League.”

“I think we deserved more in the last game. We need to improve the way we score goals. I think we are defending better, so we have a lot to play [for] in this moment.”

“You know Diogo, he did all the games and then he had that issue. You can’t say that Diogo is out until the end of the season because Diogo will work hard, to help us in the last games.”

On the benefit of having a full week of training between games, Amorim remarked, “Yeah, it was important. Not just that, but to improve as a team – more time to work on the pitch, more time to see videos and analyse not just the last game but the other ones that we didn’t have the time [to look at properly].”

“To prepare this game, to prepare the next one: that is massive for us, so we are focused on the game on Sunday.”

Amorim admitted that he will have one eye on the upcoming Europa League semi-final contest with Athletic Club.

“A little bit, to be honest, but I think that this game we need to be focused on just this game. We had this week to clean. I think the next one in the Premier League [Brentford] it is important for us to be careful. I think during the game we are going to see if there is any player that is tired or with something and try to manage that.”

He added about Bournemouth, “The same as any other team in the Premier League. We are understanding better the way that football is played in this country. They have really good players in the offence, they play quite well and they are a team with a lot of pressure in the build-up of the opponent, so we expect that, especially in their home. But we are ready for that.”

While United’s primary focus is on winning the Europa League, Amorim insisted that the remaining Premier League games are just as important to build confidence.

Bournemouth vs. United kicks off at 14:00 BST.

United’s head of scouting who had worked extensively with Ten Hag to select transfer targets to be shown the door – Athletic

INEOS’ cost-cutting drive at Manchester United rolls on with the club’s director of scouting Steve Brown set to depart at the end of the season.

This is part of the cost-cutting drive that will see 200 people lose their jobs, following last summer’s decision to reduce the workforce by 250.

The Athletic have revealed that Brown was offered an alternative role but he declined and will depart at the end of June. He has already informed his colleagues of his decision.

“Manchester United’s director of scouting Steve Brown is leaving the club as part of wide-ranging changes to the recruitment strategy at Old Trafford.

Head of scouting to depart

“Brown is the highest-profile member of the department to depart United amid the restructuring. Brown thanked his colleagues for their efforts and called United a “special place”. He will continue working until the end of June.

“He informed scouts of his decision in an email, explaining he had declined the offer of an alternative role from technical director Jason Wilcox and director of recruitment Christopher Vivell due to his experience and career timing.”

The Peoples Person had already relayed a couple of months ago that the scouting department will see a large number of redundancies as Sir Jim Ratcliffe felt the club was overstaffed in that department.

The Red Devils have a 80-strong scouting group, which was already cut down from its earlier strength of 140 scouts which included 50 full-time and 90 part-time scouts.

Brown had joined the club back in 2016, hired by former football director John Murtough and was involved heavily in selecting transfer targets during Erik ten Hag’s tenure.

Brown worked alongside EtH

The former manager’s Dutch-centric approach has been criticised and rightly so and INEOS now have Christopher Vivell, who is the director of recruitment, to assist Ruben Amorim.

As per The Athletic’s report, Brown was “a key figure in the launch of Project Bethlehem, the codename for United’s huge recruitment rebuild, and also TrackerMan, the club’s bespoke centralised database of hundreds of players using scouting reports and data.”

That had not always worked with plenty of scouts reporting that their data and information was not acted upon swiftly by the club.

Vivell has certainly changed all of that with smart deals for younger stars and INEOS will hope the club can continue to work efficiently this summer.

Agents of United star in “major discussions” with Saudi club over Old Trafford summer exit – report

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is reportedly in talks with Saudi Pro League newcomers Neom SC over a summer move.

Onana has endured a difficult season that has seen him make a number of mistake-strewn performances. He has struggled to be consistent since joining the Red Devils from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 and already, there are suggestions he could be on his way out in the upcoming window.

United continue to be linked with a number of his potential replacements including Diogo Costa (Porto), Bart Verbruggen (Brighton), Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton), Kaua Santos (Eintracht Frankfurt), Mike Maignan (AC Milan), Carl Rushworth (Brighton), Lucas Chevalier (Lille) and Senne Lammens (Royal Antwerp)

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that there is interest in the Cameroonian from Saudi Arabia.

It was subsequently noted that United must sell Onana for nothing less than £26.3m, to ensure the transaction is not recorded as a loss.

United of course agreed a deal worth £43.8m with Inter to sign the player, and the fee is amortised into the club’s accounts over the course of his five-year contract, hence his £26.3m book value.

Now, Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna has given a huge update on Onana’s future, indicating that his management is in concrete talks with Neom over a summer switch to the Gulf state.

“According to our information, the Saudi club Neom has already begun major discussions with his representatives.”

“Furthermore, Onana is open to leaving Europe for Saudi Arabia. It remains to be seen whether all parties can reach an agreement.”

Onana still has time to turn his fortunes around at Old Trafford and show why the Red Devils forked out big money to secure his signature.

The 29-year-old remains a popular figure at the training ground and in the dressing room.

United are back in action on Sunday when they go to the Vitality Stadium to take on Bournemouth. Kick-off is at 14:00 BST.

Amorim: We looked at the bigger picture

Ruben Amorim accepts it was a risk to ‘hurt’ the squad during the winter transfer window but it was one worth taking with the focus so much on the future at Manchester United.

Although Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu and Ayden Heaven arrived at Old Trafford, the attacking options were hit by the loan departures of Antony and Marcus Rashford, to Real Betis and Aston Villa respectively.

Tyrell Malacia also departed on a temporary basis, to PSV Eindhoven, but Amorim has explained that it is important to look at the bigger picture.

In the embargoed section of his press conference to preview the Bournemouth game on Sunday, he also spoke about realising the fans’ backing will not continue if results do not improve and having no regrets about taking the job, while there was a humorous moment when he was asked about our standing in the table…

Obviously, you’ve been here a few months now and have seen the actual scale of the job so do you have any regrets, any doubts that maybe you took a job that is going to take years to get right?

“No. No regrets. Not in this moment. If you ask me, like four months ago, with all the problems maybe you feel that feeling I should be stronger in starting in the beginning of the season. But, today, I have that feeling that this is something that is going to help us in the future. We are suffering a lot here, there was a lot of frustration, a lot of suffering. But I feel, in this moment, maybe because it is in the end, I feel this is the most important time, maybe in the next few years, we are going to use all the information to prepare better for the next few years. So no regrets. I think this is one of the best, this is the top what a coach can achieve, so I have no regrets at all.”

One of the important things for any manager is to retain the support of not just the owners, but the fans so how valuable has that been for you that the supports have clearly supported you and stayed behind you?

“I think that is special but I also know that people understand what we are trying to do. But I also know that this moment, that without results and sometimes without performance, and still have that support from the fans, it will finish, maybe in the next season. So I am really appreciative of that but I really know that, in the future, that is going to finish if we don’t get results.”

You say you have no regrets but, over the past few months, have you had doubts about, for instance, the formation you want to play. Has there been a moment where you’ve thought actually these guys just can’t do it? And also, you said some time ago, it’s the worst team in United’s history, I’m sure you didn’t really mean it, but have the team actually got better or have they got worse?

“No. What I think when I say that is I said, in terms of the results, and I was saying when I arrived since now, maybe I’m the worst coach and we are the worst team that performs and has the worst results in the history of Manchester United. And that is clear. It’s a fact. I think we are improving, the way we play. I have no regrets joining Manchester. I have a lot of regrets, after one week, when we lose and I see the game. I have a lot of regrets in small things. So I’m always doubting what we did in the past, trying to improve. I’m not regretting about joining the club but, if you say, if you look at this last six months, I have a lot of regrets. I should be better in certain moments.”

There have been a lot people who have questioned your system, people much better qualified than me, they have questioned that whole idea. What do you say to those critics, the critics that know better than me?

“No, nothing, because I don’t like to defend myself. It is the results. I cannot defend myself with the results. I have one idea how to play. People see one system, I see one system that can adapt in different systems. I know it’s tough, I know it’s different but I have nothing to say with the critics because, if you look at the results, they are right. So I will expect that my results in the future speak for themselves.”

Part one: Press conference v Bournemouth Video

Part one: Press conference v Bournemouth

Press conference part one | Ruben answers questions on Diogo Dalot’s injury, Amad’s return, Matheus Cunha and more…

Is half of your challenge or problem that you can’t sit there and actually be honest because you have to protect your players so, therefore, you know a lot more of what the issues are and how to fix it but can’t say because of your job and needing to think of the team? Is it difficult to explain why you’re 14th in the league?

“Sorry, what is the question, more or less?”

Why are you so low in the league?

“So lonely? [laughs]”

So low!

“We like a lot of things in the team and then you never saw this in Manchester United but you saw it in big teams. We saw it with Milan in the past, with a lot of problems. Big teams that when you get in one context, it’s really hard, and then you understand that, in January, we lost and you are talking about Rashford and Antony, we lost these players. And we didn’t bring new ones. It was a risk but I think there are things here that are more important than to score 10 more goals this season. We are trying to do something more important. We can hurt the squad now but, in the future, it is going to help the club, so I think we are in that path.
