Two Manchester United players returned to first-team training on Wednesday, ahead of our Saturday afternoon Premier League fixture against Sunderland.

After a short absence due to a family bereavement, Amad has been welcomed back into the group. The Ivorian winger had been involved in our opening six games of the season, starting five, but missed last weekend’s trip to Brentford, where the Reds were beaten 3-1.

Explaining the situation prior to the loss, Ruben Amorim explained that “someone in his family passed away, so we are giving all the support to Amad. We understood it was important to him to have his time. We are here for him.”

Amad is now back training and working hard to prepare for the weekend’s game, where United seek an immediate response to defeat when we welcome his former club, Sunderland, to Old Trafford.

Also part of the main training group again was Tyrell Malacia.

Noussair Mazraoui remained absent, having been ruled out until the October international break, which begins next week.

As well as Amad, United will have Casemiro available for selection again, after he missed the Brentford visit through a one-game suspension.

Read Skinner’s update on four Reds

Wednesday 01 October 2025 10:40

Marc Skinner has provided a fitness update on four players, ahead of Manchester United Women’s meeting with table-topping Chelsea on Friday evening.

The Reds will overtake the reigning Barclays WSL champions at the summit with victory at the Progress with Unity Stadium in Leigh, although Sonia Bompastor’s side haven’t lost in the top-flight since May 2024.

Skinner’s side are in fine fettle, however, having beaten Liverpool 2-0 last time out. We’ve conceded just one league goal this term.

Our options for the Blues clash have been boosted, with the news that Anna Sandberg should be available to return having missed the trip to Merseyside through illness.

The game is likely to come too soon for Leah Galton, but Simi Awujo could make the squad for the first time in 2025/26.

“Anna caught ill on the day, so that’s why she dropped out of the squad,” explained Skinner in his pre-match press conference.

“She was given a late fitness test but couldn’t pass it. She should be fine coming into this game.

“Simi Awujo should be back in training today so should be part of the matchday squad. Leah’s training but probably will miss this one.”

The boss also provided a timescale on Millie Turner’s return, following the news that the knee injury she suffered at London City three weeks ago is not as serious as first feared.

We’re still unlikely to see the long-serving centre-back play again in 2025 though, according to Skinner.

“Millie with the knee injury she’s had, it wasn’t as bad as we first thought but she’ll probably be out until around Christmas time,” he added.

“We’re hoping to welcome her back just after the new year. That will be the timescale and the plan hopefully.”

That will unfortunately rule Millie out of our six Champions League fixtures, the first of which arrives next Wednesday when Norwegian outfit Valerenga come to Leigh.

A United team way of life

Introducing our new adidas ZNE range, as worn by the players.

United poised to seal bargain move for 25-year-old star with 6 goals in 9 games – report

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic was widely expected to leave the Allianz Stadium in the summer.

He was offered to several clubs, including Manchester United, but none took up the chance to sign him.

With no takers, Vlahovic remained at Juventus, entering the final 12 months of his contract with the Old Lady.

But in Turin, Vlahovic now finds himself in a tricky spot.

The Bianconeri’s summer business saw them land two top strikers: Loïs Openda and Jonathan David, leaving Vlahovic playing a backup role.

Bright start

Despite limited minutes, Vlahovic has still made his mark. Six goals in nine appearances is a solid return.

Such a bright start should have shifted Juve’s stance on his long-term future. But it has not.

January exit mooted

Vlahovic is still expected to leave. The Italian giants are reportedly keen to get his hefty wages off their books, which explains the lack of movement on a contract extension.

Of which, according to Football Insider:

“Italian giants are eager to sell Vlahovic in January, rather than lose him on a free transfer in the summer.

“Therefore, Man United will be given a heavy discount if they decide to accelerate their interest in the Serbian striker.”

Given his early-season bright form, despite limited game time, many argue he is worth the gamble.

United’s interesting position

At United, the counterpoint is clear: in Benjamin Sesko, they already have a top striker capable of firing them to glory.

Sesko opened his United account last weekend, scoring in the 3-1 defeat to Brentford.

The hope is that his first goal will now open the floodgates for the 22-year-old.

United passed on Vlahovic in the summer, but it will be interesting to see if they pounce on his availability this winter.

Then again, with the striker set to be available on a free come summer, the wiser move might be to wait and snap him up at the end of the season.

Since Dan was introduced to Manchester United in 2008, he has lived and breathed the club. What started as being a fan evolved into writing about United, allowing him to feel part of their journey. Hopefully, his work might even help rekindle your love for the kings of Manchester.

“Honest, to God”: Former United assistant begs club to capture “phenomenal player” to transform team

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has urged his old club to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton.

Desperate for midfield improvement

The Red Devils spent part of August chasing Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba.

United were keen to bring in the Cameroonian but the Seagulls’ unwillingness to sell and mammoth price put the deal on ice to perhaps the winter or next summer.

Other midfielders are certainly on United’s radar though as there have been strong links to Crystal Palace’s Wharton and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson.

Former United player Rio Ferdinand has recently urged his former side to add Wharton to the side’s ranks and his former coach Meulensteen agrees wholeheartedly.

Meulensteen impressed

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy podcast the former assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson gave a clear indication on who he feels would drastically improve United’s midfield.

The likes of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro have been regularly criticised for their inability to win midfield battles in the Premier League and Meulensteen has claimed that Wharton is the answer.

He stated, “I kept saying it, and I said it off-air before to you as well as I absolutely rate him so highly, and that’s one of the players that I would have brought into Manchester United directly. Adam Wharton. Honestly, to God.”

When pressed on what he felt the England youngster would add to the team he stated, “what I like about Wharton is, honestly, you look at him, you analyse him. His intention is always to play forward, and he’s a good ball retainer.”

The Dutchman also added that, “he knows when to put a bit of a bit of juice to his pass, you know, breaking the lines a little bit of disguise, you know. A phenomenal player, honestly.”

Wharton has continued to impress this season with Crystal Palace flying high in third place in the league.

The 21-year-old has continued to be vital for the Eagles, playing in five of their six league games so far this season.

When King Eric made his comeback

Sometimes, when looking back, things can seem very black and white.

Football has always been about 11 players, not any one individual, and yet, Eric Cantona was the man who changed everything at Manchester United.

The Frenchman will always be described as a catalyst for the success in the 1990s, as Alex Ferguson made a masterstroke in the transfer market to land the enigmatic centre-forward from fierce rivals Leeds United.

It is not an exaggeration to say he would, as the cliche has it, produce at least one moment of sheer genius in every match that would justify the admission fee.

Eric Cantona was back with his flicks and tricks.

An artist on the field, full of flicks and tricks but also purpose and end product, it was accepted he crossed the line when assaulting a Crystal Palace supporter at Selhurst Park in January 1995.

The provocation may have earned sympathy from many a United fan but it was inevitable he would be punished for the indiscretion and, when it came, it was severe. Although, outside of the game, a prison sentence was initially handed down (reduced to community service), the decision from the club to suspend our talisman for the rest of the season did seem an appropriate response.

However, the FA extended the ban to eight months, which meant he would also be missing for the start of the 1995/96 campaign.

But for West Ham United’s Ludek Miklosko having the game of his life on the final day of the Premier League term at Upton Park, and Neville Southall producing similar heroics in the FA Cup final for Everton, we may have done a second successive Double.

Instead, we ended up with nothing and it was an empty feeling that presided over the summer.

Two of the best all-time goalkeeping performances against us had contributed hugely to the lack of silverware but the overriding feeling was clearly that we missed that extra spark, the confidence and arrogance, the sheer belief that we would win, which the talismanic Cantona provided.

Eric had turned a side that had blown the last Division One title with it seemingly in our grasp, into winners and, without him, it made sense to fans that this was what had been the key difference in those horrible final six days of 1994/95.

So the following season started with similar trepidation, exacerbated by the fact Ferguson decided to sell Paul Ince, Andrei Kanchelskis and Mark Hughes, three hugely popular players, and entrust untried youngsters with getting the club back to winning ways.

Time would show it was absolute folly to ever question the great man but the opening-day defeat at Aston Villa, followed by BBC pundit Alan Hansen’s proclamation that you never win anything with kids, made the mood particularly apprehensive.

The way we look back at what would ultimately be our second Double is that Cantona came back and galvanised the team, starting from where he left off and scoring loads of important goals, particularly in 1-0 victories, before slamming in that volley against Wembley to defeat Liverpool in the cup final.

That does some injustice to the players who, without him, embarked on a five-game winning run in the league after the Villa defeat, before a goalless draw at Sheffield Wednesday left us in third place as the calendar moved to October.

1 October 1995: The Return of the King. Eric Cantona made his comeback, after serving an eight-month ban…

And this is what we were all waiting for.

1 October 1995, thirty years ago to this day.

It could have been scripted that Liverpool would provide the opposition and the mood was euphoric. Eric was back and the ground was awash with French tricolours. Amid an incredible atmosphere from the first whistle, with two minutes gone, Cantona supplied the assist for Nicky Butt to open the scoring and bring the house down.

Robbie Fowler seemed intent on spoiling the party and produced two clinically taken efforts to turn the game on its head.

Doubts emerged again but, for all his lack of match sharpness, Cantona was on the field and capable of providing the same level of reassurance he had given in helping propel the Reds to the title in 1993 and 1994.

A moment that will live long in the memory of all those at Old Trafford.

In the 71st minute, Jamie Redknapp brought Ryan Giggs down inside the box, after a typically fast raid by the Reds.

Step forward our no.7. There was only ever going to be one outcome as he tucked the ball past David James and squared things at 2-2.

Cue bedlam and Cantona encroaching into the crowd again, this time swinging around the goal stanchion as he lapped up the acclaim of those who adored him.

Eric was back, the swagger returned and United went on to conquer all before us domestically again, doing the Double.

Cantona spearheaded the Reds to another league win in 1997 before sensationally retiring at the age of 30, meaning, remarkably, he won the title in each of his four full seasons at Old Trafford, in addition to the year before joining with Leeds.

United loanee continues to take great strides in Championship, could be answer to first team’s problems

Manchester United had two youngsters in action last night for their respective loan clubs.

To follow where all of United’s loanees are in action this season, click here.

Radek Vitek

The Czech keeper has continued to add to his growing reputation with numerous impressive performances and saves for Bristol City.

The Robins sit 4th in the Championship after a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town last night.

Vitek made two saves in the match, with both coming from inside the box.

He helped clear his lines with one high claim in the penalty area and also ran out to the ball once.

The Czech keeper’s goal was breached once as he failed to stop a penalty from Ipswich’s Jack Clarke.

Vitek also won his only ground duel in the match but his kicking was wayward, only connecting with three of his 15 long ball attempts.

Nonetheless, it was another impressive, solid display by the keeper who will next be in action when Bristol City host Queen’s Park Rangers on Saturday afternoon.

Harry Amass

The 18-year-old is another United academy player who has impressed in the Championship so far this season.

Amass played 90 minutes in Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Birmingham City.

He completed 65% of his passing attempts and had 45 touches of the ball.

The young full back completed one out of his three crossing attempts and two of his five long balls.

The defender was also competitive in duels, winning three out of his eight ground battles and two of his four aerial contests.

He also got through some good defensive work, making three clearances and two interceptions.

Amass is likely next to be in action when his Sheffield Wednesday side host Coventry City this Saturday lunchtime.

United Women star leaves competition in her dust with jaw-dropping statistics

Manchester United Women have had numerous top performers so far this season after a wonderful start to the campaign.

Three victories and a draw see the side fighting at the top of the table and they have already secured their passage to the group stage of the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Phallon Tullis-Joyce on fire

The American keeper was tasked with filling the rather large gloves of Mary Earps last season but passed with flying colours.

She was nominated for PFA Womens’ Players’ Player of the Year and was also voted in the WSL Team of the Season.

The American was rewarded with a new contract at the back end of last season.

She was also handed her first appearances for the United States national team as a reward for her fine efforts between the posts.

Picked up where she left off

Tullis-Joyce has picked up where she left off last season with a string of stunning performances this season.

The American has kept six clean sheets in eight domestic and European matches this season and doesn’t seem in the mood to slow down.

The club’s official website reports that, “nobody has kept as many clean sheets in the top division since 21 September 2024, when Phallon made her WSL bow.”

In the 26 matches she has played in the league, there have been an amazing 16 clean sheets. “Only Manchester City (twice), Arsenal and Liverpool have scored past Phallon more than once in a game during that spell.”

In addition, “Phallon has saved 80% of the on-target shots she’s faced in the WSL, again placing her clear of Hampton (79%) and Arsenal’s Daphne van Domselaar, who has a 75% save percentage and 11 clean sheets in this time frame.”

Her boss Marc Skinner has clearly been impressed and after her incredible acrobatic stop versus Arsenal recently he stated, “I’ve said it many times, we have the best goalkeeper.” The statistics certainly back up his assertions.

Tullis-Joyce will certainly need to be at her best this Friday evening when the champions Chelsea arrive to the Progress With Unity Stadium.

“Working on some things”: National team boss pinpoints what United starlet must do to win back place in team

Manchester United starlet Chido Obi has not had the season he had perhaps dreamed of over the summer.

Meteoric rise last season

The young Danish striker left Arsenal’s academy in the summer of 2024 and joined United.

He took to the club like a duck to water, scoring numerous goals in the youth team and playing a vital role in United’s run to the Youth Cup semi-final.

Obi also made his first team debut in February and regularly outplayed last season’s first choice striker Rasmus Hojlund.

The 17-year-old made eight first team appearances last year including 90 minutes against Brentford in May.

Lack of opportunities this season

He also scored two goals in United’s post-season friendly match versus Hong Kong but hardly got a look in during the summer tour of The United States of America.

He has not been in the first team squad this season and has had to be content playing youth football. The forward has scored three goals in six Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy matches.

National team omission

Denmark U21 manager Lars Knudsen has responded by not including the exciting starlet in the latest squad for October matches.

Speaking to Danish paper Tipsbladet he claimed, “Chido is at United right now and working on some things purely sportingly that he needs to put into his game. He sometimes starts in the under-21 team. We have a close dialogue both with Chido and with the club about where he is in terms of development.”

The coach also stressed that they have been observing his progress closely and will continue to do so.

Pressed on what Obi needs to improve he explained, “among other things, he needs to participate a little more in some team-related things. He is a good goalscorer, but he could also score many specific types of goals.”

Knudsen stressed that the forward “clearly has some top skills” and “exciting potential” but he must continue to work hard if he is to become the finished article.

“Normal for us to carry him”: Mbeumo rallies around United’s under-fire star

Manchester United’s new signing Bryan Mbeumo has opened up on his captain Bruno Fernandes.

Summer arrival

After complex negotiations with Brentford, Mbeumo finally arrived in July to Old Trafford.

The Cameroon international opened his goalscoring account in the League Cup defeat to Grimsby Town.

He then added his second goal versus Burnley but failed to find the back of the net in September.

The attacker has been one of United’s better players this season however, causing numerous problems against most defences and was one of the stronger performers versus Manchester City and Chelsea.

Comments on Bruno Fernandes

Mbeumo’s teammate, Bruno Fernandes, has certainly had a mixed season to date to say the least.

Many pundits have criticised Ruben Amorim’s decision to persist with playing the attacking midfielder so deep in the midfield, with many feeling it nullifies his best qualities.

He has scored two goals this season, including a last minute winner versus Burnley.

Nonetheless, he has also missed two crucial penalties in away matches versus Fulham and Brentford.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Mbeumo has argued that United’s players must not always rely on Fernandes but also support him in difficult times.

He claimed, “it’s important to support him because this is what he’s doing every time.
“I think it’s normal for us to carry him as well sometimes because he gives us a lot, and it’s good for him to have us as well.”

United have certainly asked a lot of Fernandes over his five years at the club as he has arguably been the club’s only consistent performer during that time.

Supporters of the side will hope that the Portugal star will soon return to the form of the player that has captured their imagination so many times in recent years.
