Matheus Cunha sends clear message on social media after starting from the bench against Sunderland

Manchester United ensured they head into the international break in better spirits by sweeping aside Sunderland on Saturday afternoon at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim’s men struck twice in the first half before holding on with relative comfort to secure their third win on the bounce in front of home support.

Mason Mount opened the scoring after raising some eyebrows with his presence in the starting line-up in place of summer signing Matheus Cunha, who started on the bench.

Cunha’s electric start to his career in Manchester has stalled somewhat after an injury ruled him out of a handful of games and struggling to make an impact on his return in the defeat to Brentford.

Cunha reacts to weekend events

Mount was excellent throughout on Saturday but was replaced by Cunha five minutes after the hour to give the Brazilian a run out in the later stages.

With the game already won there was no real need for the 26-year-old to do much more than help his teammates over the line and secure the much needed points that leave United in the top half of the table going into the break.

Cunha will no doubt have been disappointed not to start but, as reported by The Express, did have a positive message for the fans which he shared on social media after the game.

“Nothing to say about how beautiful it is to win like this, at home and with the fans by our side,” he posted, alongside a heart on fire emoji.

Cunha’s post will be well received by United supporters, who are desperate for the team to show the fighting spirit required to get some more points on the board in the Premier League after another rocky start to the season.

What next for Cunha

Despite Cunha’s public show of positivity he will be acutely aware of the form Mount has shown this season. The former Chelsea man has certainly staked his claim to start the crunch fixture at Anfield after the international break.

With Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko also shoo-in’s to start in the coming weeks at least, Cunha knows it’s Mount he needs to dislodge to get a run in the starting XI.

However, given Mount’s injury record and inability to complete 90 minutes week-on-week, the former Wolves man will no doubt get opportunities to impress.

It will then be down to Cunha to take his chances but Amorim will be delighted to have such quality options in forward areas this term after struggling so badly in front of goal last season.

Hojlund delivers honest verdict on his stunning resurgence after firing Napoli to comeback win vs. Napoli

Manchester United loanee Rasmus Hojlund has shared his honest verdict on his incredible turnaround in fortunes after joining Napoli.

Hojlund’s resurgence

Hojlund is experiencing a remarkable resurgence at Napoli, looking like a completely transformed player compared to the one who struggled to deliver at United.

He has made six appearances for Napoli across Serie A and the Champions League, scoring four goals in that process.

Hojlund was the hero once again for Napoli on Sunday, netting the decisive goal to complete their comeback against Genoa. The striker reacted fastest to tuck away a rebound from close range.

Hojlund may have been unsure about leaving United in the summer, but with the way he’s performing now, he certainly won’t be regretting the decision.

After the final whistle vs. Genoa, Hojlund spoke to DAZN and gave his verdict on his revival.

Hojlund’s remarks

The striker said [as quoted by Football Italia], “I don’t think I’ve changed much.”

“I’m just doing my job and working day by day to give my best and bring something to the team.”

On Antonio Conte gesturing and issuing instructions to him during the game vs. Genoa, Hojlund revealed, “He saw I was a bit tired and told me to use my head – he needed that from me, a bit of clarity to refresh myself and keep playing.”

Hojlund also told Sky Sports, “Winning twice in a week at the Maradona is huge.”

“Maybe today wasn’t our best performance, but taking all three points was the most important thing.”

Napoli are believed to be very happy with Hojlund’s progress at the club so far and are already looking to make his stay a permanent one.

TEAM NEWS

Fourteen Reds featured in Friday night’s meeting with Chelsea, as we ended the Blues’ 100 per cent start to the WSL season.

Anna Sandberg made a goalscoring return to the line-up, following illness, while Simi Awujo and Hannah Blundell were included on the bench for the first time in 2025/26.

Leah Galton has been taking part in training as she builds towards a comeback from injury, but Millie Turner is out until Christmas, meaning she will miss our six scheduled European games.

GET TO KNOW VALERENGA

The Oslo-based outfit have lifted the Toppserien title in each of the last two seasons and are currently engaged in a titanic tussle with Brann, as they seek to clinch a third success in a row.

Four points separate the sides and, with five games to play, second-placed Valerenga will have one eye on Sunday’s top-of-the-table fixture. The capital club will, no doubt, fancy their chances of closing the gap too, after they ended Brann’s long unbeaten domestic run in September’s Norwegian Cup semi-finals.

Valerenga overcame HJK Helsinki, Slavia Prague and Ferencvaros to reach this stage, scoring 10 goals and conceding just one.

Their key player Olaug Tvedten has 27 goal involvements in the Toppserien, although she is yet to score in the Champions League, while 37-year-old Elise Thorsnes arrives in Leigh with a spring in her step, having scored a hat-trick in Friday’s 4-1 victory over Bodo/Glimt.

Valerenga played Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Juventus in last season’s competition.

HOW THE COMPETITION WORKS

The format of the Women’s Champions League has been changed this term, to more closely mirror the men’s tournament.

For September’s draw, the 18 competing teams were divided into three pots of six, based on coefficients. Each club has six fixtures – three home, three away – against two clubs from each pot, but there are no groups – like the men’s Champions League, the results are now displayed in one giant table.

At the end of the league phase, in December, the teams ranked from first to fourth will qualify for the tournament’s quarter finals, while those fifth to 12th will face off in two-legged play-offs to determine who will join them.

Those in the bottom six will be eliminated from European competition for this season.

Explosive United loanee has already convinced European giants, he is “part of their long-term project” – Romano

Rasmus Hojlund has found a new lease of life after leaving Manchester United to join Napoli on a temporary move this summer. The Danish striker endured a difficult 2024/25 campaign, registering just 10 goals from 52 games in all competitions.

Hojlund was initially brought in to solve the Red Devils’ goalscoring conundrum in the summer of 2023 from Atalanta. The player had lit up Serie A the previous campaign, scoring nine times in 32 games in the league, convincing United to invest around €75m for his signature.

The Dane enjoyed an impressive debut campaign, scoring 16 times from 43 games, but lost his scoring boots last season.

United were determined to address their goalscoring issues over the summer and invested heavily in Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenian’s arrival ultimately signalled the end of Hojlund’s stay at the Theatre of Dreams.

Rejuvenated by a return to Italy

Hojlund is a childhood United fan and would have preferred to stay and fight for his place at the club. However, the 22 year old was reportedly informed that he wasn’t part of Amorim’s plans after the defeat to Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup in August.

The Dane ultimately moved to Napoli on deadline day on a season-long loan. The Serie A champions reportedly paid a £5.2m fee for his signature, and also have an obligation to sign him permanently next summer for £38m.

The clause will become active if the Partenopei manage to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Hojlund, meanwhile, has been rejuvenated by his return to familiar hunting grounds. The Dane has scored four goals in six games so far this season and has flourished under Antonio Conte’s tactics.

For the record, his replacement, Sesko, has scored twice in eight games for United to date.

Already part of Napoli’s future plans

Acclaimed journalist Fabrizio Romano has now provided an update on Hojlund’s future at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said that the Dane is almost certain to stay at Napoli beyond his loan deal.

“Apart from the obligation to buy, Napoli want to keep Rasmus Hojlund permanently. Napoli trust him and see him as part of their long-term project. The permanent transfer is almost guaranteed.”

United will be pleased with the update as it will help them raise a significant sum from Hojlund’s exit. Sesko, meanwhile, has already displayed impressive poacher’s instincts in both his two goals so far, while his all-round displays have gathered praise as well.

As such, should the Danes’ deal go through, it could suit all parties involved. However, the decision could come back to haunt the Red Devils if the Slovenian fails to live up to expectations at Old Trafford.

“He’s proving it”: Manager praises United loanee in swipe at Ineos’ brutal summer decision

Being at Manchester United and getting the chance to represent them was a dream come true for Rasmus Hojlund.

But sadly for the Dane, that dream ended sooner than expected.

Forced out

Two seasons at the Theatre of Dreams, the 22-year-old failed to become the goalscoring monster United had hoped for. Just 26 goals in 95 appearances saw him unceremoniously forced out.

Hojlund was desperate to stay, prove himself, and earn the trust of Ruben Amorim.

However, with United signing RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, the Portuguese tactician decided the ex-Atalanta forward no longer fit into his plans.

With fewer games to play due to United’s absence from European competitions, keeping Hojlund would have been unwise.

Lukaku replacement

AC Milan showed interest, but it was Napoli, reacting swiftly to Romelu Lukaku’s injury, who pushed hardest and secured the United striker’s signature.

A season-long loan deal with a £38 million obligation to buy saw Hojlund head to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium to reignite his career.

Determined to leave his Old Trafford struggles behind, and with big shoes to fill in Lukaku’s absence, the United loanee has risen to the occasion.

Bright start

Four goals in six games for the Italian champions mark an impressive start for a player who struggled in front of goal last season.

His fourth came on Sunday night as Gli Azzurri edged Genoa 2–1 to reclaim top spot in Serie A.

The October international break could not have come at a worse time for Hojlund, with his goal against Genoa coming just days after his Champions League brace against Sporting CP.

Conte impressed

Napoli are beginning to feel vindicated for taking a gamble on the United outcast. Manager Antonio Conte even aimed a subtle dig at United with a bold prediction after Sunday’s win:

“He’s a 22-year-old who was on the sidelines at Manchester United. He has significant room for improvement; he needs to work because he has the potential to become a star, and he’s proving it,” Conte told Gazetta dello Sport.

Hojlund’s resurgence in Serie A is clearly a positive for him, and United fans may quietly celebrate his revival.

Unfortunately, he was unable to find success in the Premier League or fulfil his dream at United.

Conte’s prediction may well come true. Still raw and only just beginning his journey, the Dane looks destined to reach his “huge” potential.

But with United needing results now, they could not afford to wait for him to blossom.

That said, with Sesko beginning to find his feet, scoring in back-to-back games and producing eye-catching performances, United may not end up missing Hojlund, even with admissions that the striker is not expected to return to Old Trafford.

Leon earns senior call-up

Diego Leon has headed to Osaka after being awarded a first call-up to the senior Paraguay squad.

The Manchester United wing-back has impressed at Under-20 level for his country and coach Gustavo Alfaro has opted to have a closer look at his talents in two upcoming friendlies.

The South American side are in Asia, facing Japan on Friday before tackling South Korea next Tuesday (14 October).

Leon has been named in a 22-man squad for the games and will hope to make his full international debut at some point.

It is an exciting time for Paraguay, as they have qualified for their first World Cup finals in 16 years.

The country’s president, Santiago Pena, declared a national holiday in the wake of the draw with Ecuador that clinched a spot in the United States, Mexico and Canada next summer.

Leon, still only 18, is settling into life in England, following his move from Cerro Porteno in his homeland.

The youngster was an unused substitute for the fourth time this term, in Saturday’s 2-0 victory against Sunderland, as he awaits his first-team bow for Ruben Amorim’s men.

Congratulations to Diego and we look forward to seeing how he gets on with his country.

Lammens: Keeper of promise

Senne Lammens

Monday 06 October 2025 09:56

Ahead of September’s Manchester derby, Ruben Amorim was inevitably asked about his goalkeeping situation, following a flurry of activity in the department with the loan departure of Andre Onana and the signing of Belgium’s Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

“We are really pleased,” said our head coach, focusing on his new arrival. “He’s a goalkeeper with a lot of potential. I know that we are in the moment that the goalkeeper needs to be really strong and have a lot of experience, but we are also in the moment that we have to look at the present but with a focus on the future. So it’s a little bit of both. We have an option that can give us different things in the moment but also has a great potential to be our goalkeeper for a lot of years. So that was our choice in the end.”

Lammens arrived at Carrington during the season’s first international break, but it was the Turkish international Altay Bayindir who continued his role as first choice between the posts in September.

The Belgian was given time to acquaint himself with his new club and new team-mates, before making his debut against Sunderland on Saturday, but it hasn’t taken long for Senne to make an impression.

“He’s been really good, looks really sharp – I’ve been really impressed with him and I’m really looking forward to playing with him,” said Luke Shaw, while fellow custodian Tom Heaton expanded: “I didn’t know too much about him before. It’s only been a few days’ training but he seems like a really good lad; calm but a strong personality. His goalkeeping fundamentals are very impressive.”

The best of Senne’s United debut Video

The best of Senne’s United debut

🎞 Player highlights | Senne Lammens impressed the Old Trafford crowd with a confident display against Sunderland…

Those fundamentals were formed largely in the youth system of Club Brugge, where a 13-year-old Lammens watched on as the Belgian side were swept away by United during a 2015/16 Champions League qualifying tie. In the space of just three years, the 16-year-old stopper, already counting Thibaut Courtois and Manuel Neuer as his main influences, had ascended to Brugge’s first-team squad, making headlines in Belgium as part of the travelling party for a group-stage trip to Atletico Madrid.

Unaffected, Senne trained normally in the Wanda Metropolitano, adapting to the situation as seamlessly as he did a year later when featuring for Brugge’s Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League. Trailing Real Madrid 1-2 in the Belgian capital and requiring a draw to reach the competition’s knockout stages, Lammens strode forward for an injury-time corner, bulleted home a brilliant header and sealed his side’s dramatic passage.

Despite his early affinity with the spotlight, playing back-up to veteran Belgian international Simon Mignolet restricted first-team opportunities at Brugge, allowing Lammens to make a surprise free transfer to reigning champions Royal Antwerp in the summer of 2023. Though he made his Champions League bow in a 0-2 defeat to Porto, Senne was primarily utilised in the Croky Cup – Belgium’s domestic knockout competition – and continued to deputise to the more senior Jean Butez in his first campaign at Antwerp before making the breakthrough in the Jupiler Pro League’s end-of-season play-offs, where he started nine of his side’s 10 games.

From there, there was no looking back. Lammens was installed as first choice going into the 2024/25 campaign, at which point, in his own words: “Last season was a little bit of everything coming together, every single piece falling together. It’s what I’ve worked for my entire life, so it’s really nice last season that I could show myself to the outside world.”

Among them from the off were United’s goalkeeping scouts, who watched the then-22-year-old intently throughout last season, becoming further and further impressed as the campaign unfolded. Though Antwerp finished fifth in the final standings, their custodian was far and away atop the individual goalkeeping rankings.

A Belgian league record of four penalty saves in the same season provided one eye-catching stat, but moreover was Senne’s proficiency at the keeper’s base currency: shot-stopping. Lammens set the benchmark among Europe’s top 10 leagues for shots saved, finishing well ahead of then-Brentford stopper Mark Flekken, who made 20 fewer than the Belgian’s impressive 173 saves over the course of the campaign.

Having passed the eye test with United’s scouting network and the number crunching of the club’s data department, Lammens emerged as the Reds’ primary target when it became clear that Onana’s position as starting goalkeeper was up for grabs.

Explaining the Cameroonian’s departure, Amorim stressed: “I think we understood that this needed a change and sometimes it is hard to point out why. Sometimes it is the moment, the bad luck in some moments. It is hard on him, on us. Our thinking is to have a change in the goalkeepers.”

Just as Heaton identified after his fleeting contact with his fellow stopper, a common refrain among those who had worked with Lammens previously centred on his calmness and unflappable approach to his craft – a mindset he feels is simply a core part of his being.

How would you rate Senne Lammens out of five on his United debut?

“My parents are also really calm and collected,” he shrugged in his first interview with club media, “but from growing up, when I was in the youth team and I thought about the goalkeeper I wanted to become later in life, I think one of the best attributes you can have as a goalkeeper is staying calm under pressure, in any circumstances, even if you make a mistake. You just move on and try to give your best to the team.

“I think if you want to be a good keeper, you have to be a rock behind the defence. They have to trust you and count on you in difficult moments. That is something I take pride in. Of course, I can improve in this because the next level [joining United] is bigger, but it is one of my attributes that I am proud of and I try to improve.”

As part of Lammens’s dedication to that process, he frequently journals his thoughts and emotions around each fixture in order to give himself a permanent reference point.

“Before and after the game, I just write key words down and my thoughts a little bit,” he explained. “Because, sometimes, if you don’t do that, it can be a lot going through your mind. It helps me with staying calm and staying in the moment a little bit and not overreacting in situations.

“[I write] key words, trigger points. Maybe you are playing a team who puts a lot of pressure on and then you know you don’t have to think a lot during the games, mentally you are already ready, already prepared for the game and what it’s going to be like. So, when the game comes, you are not going to be so surprised by it. I think that is important.”

In an age when modern goalkeeping has strayed towards how much they can add to the collective outfield output, United’s requirements of the starting goalkeeper are more of a throwback to a time of all-rounders, a time before the 12-year reign of David De Gea, who specialised as one of history’s greatest shot-stoppers.

For Alex Stepney, the second-most experienced ’keeper in club history – his 539 games landing fractionally behind De Gea’s 545 – the demand of Lammens is a return to the basics of the job.

“Senne, like all youngsters in his position, needs to show he has the courage to be his own man,” said the European Cup-winning stopper. “So many these days don’t grasp that the 18-yard box – especially the area from the six-yard line to the penalty spot – is theirs to command, no messing. If they do that they will get the instant respect of team-mates and opponents.

“David De Gea took over in 2011 and remember, he was young too but, after a difficult start showed that singular quality the top boys have. Playing for United is a tough, demanding job and one only a few are really cut out for. The best way for Senne to prove it is to want the ball, not to shy away from responsibility; when it comes to the box, he’s the boss.”

Fortunately for Stepney and anyone of a United persuasion, Lammens regards himself as capable of meeting those demands.

“I’m quite all-round, I take pride in that,” explained the Belgian. “Of course, you have working points that you can improve at everything. I like to play from the back also with the team, at my feet. I like to help the team with controlling the space behind the defence, helping my defenders. And, of course, if you want to be a top goalkeeper at this level, you have to be a good shot-stopper, so I think I’m an all-round [goalkeeper]. I can improve also and I’m already eager to start training and improving so that I can take the next step.”

Major Rashford injury update emerges after Barcelona’s chastening defeat to Sevilla – report

A fitness update has been issued on Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford after he seemed to pick up an issue during Barcelona’s defeat to Sevilla on Sunday.

Rashford’s fine form continues

Rashford is enjoying a fine run of form and appears revitalised after his recent struggles at Old Trafford.

He scored Barcelona’s only goal as they suffered a 4-1 loss at the hands of Sevilla during the weekend.

Rashford delivered a superb finish just before the break to cut Sevilla’s lead in half, but it ultimately proved meaningless as Robert Lewandowski’s missed penalty in the second half cost the Blaugrana, with Sevilla later adding two more goals.

He has been involved in seven goals in 10 games for Barcelona across all competitions (three goals and four assists). Thus is more than any other player for the Catalan giants this season.

Rashford was one of the very few Barcelona players who put up a decent performance, so there was a lot of concern when he hit the floor in visible pain and discomfort after the final whistle.

The England international was escorted off the pitch by the club’s medical staff.

Carlos Monfort of Diario Sport has given an update on Rashford, indicating that the problem is not as serious as initially feared.

Rashford update emerges

Monfort wrote on X, “Barça sources assure that Marcus Rashford’s issue is just a knock.”

“Although he ended the match lying on the field, it doesn’t seem to be anything serious.”

‼️ Fuentes del Barça aseguran que lo de Marcus Rashford es solo un golpe.

Pese a que terminó el encuentro tendido en el terreno de juego, no parece nada serio. @sport.

— Carlos Monfort (@monfortcarlos) October 5, 2025

Hansi Flick will be breathing a sigh of relief that Rashford’s injury isn’t too serious. With Raphinha and Lamine Yamal already sidelined, losing Rashford would have spelt major trouble for the reigning La Liga champions.

What is unclear is whether Rashford will link up with his England teammates for the ongoing international break.
