Manchester United have the edge in the battle with Newcastle for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.
Writing on his X account, the journalist said there is a belief that the Slovenian international will favour a move to Old Trafford:
“Manchester United held concrete talks with Benjamin Sesko during RB Leipzig’s training camp and also on-site, as reported. There is and was always a feeling that Sesko would choose MUFC over all other current options. Christopher Vivell is very eager to bring Sesko in.
“Newcastle representatives were also on site to discuss a potential move for Sesko. Talks ongoing. Decision soon.”
Sesko is now Man United’s top target
There were suggestions in the English media that the Red Devils would favour an approach for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins. It is believed that the 29-year-old is interested in making the switch to Manchester.
However, The Athletic reporter David Ornstein confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that Sesko is now the “preferred option” among the club’s hierarchy.
There is said to be a gentleman’s agreement in place between the player and RB Leipzig that he will be allowed to leave for a fee between €80m (£69m) and €90m (£78m).
Vivell has seemingly won the battle of wills
Up until now, the club have been working on the Watkins and Sesko deals concurrently, with enquiries having been made for both.
However, Sesko has a strong advocate in Man United’s Director of Recruitment, Christopher Vivell. The German was at Red Bull Salzburg and Leipzig when Sesko was signed by the two clubs.
If both the player and United now want the move to happen, the question now becomes, can the Red Devils afford to match his asking price? We may find out over the coming days.
