Benjamin Sesko: Why Bayern Munich are eyeing Man United ace

Manchester United are linked with attacking reinforcements this summer, but Benjamin Sesko remains central to their plans. The Red Devils signed the Slovenian striker last summer to address their striker issues after a disappointing campaign in front of goal.

With Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failing to impress, the English giants turned their attention to Sesko, who had caught the eye with RB Leipzig. United saw off stiff competition to win the race for the Slovenian, while Hojlund left Old Trafford on loan to Napoli.

Sesko’s tenure at United

Sesko had a slow start to life at the Theatre of Dreams under former head coach Ruben Amorim. However, he picked up the pace following the Portuguese’s departure in January.

The 22 year old was outstanding under Michael Carrick, and played a major role in the Red Devils’ surge to third place in the Premier League table. Sesko finished the campaign with 12 goals and one assist from 32 games.

Sesko is currently recovering from a knock picked up in the tail end of last season and has not featured in pre-season so far. However, his stock remains high and it now appears that his performances have forced an old suitor to take note.

Bayern Munich retain Sesko interest

In his column for CF Bayern Insider, journalist Christian Falk explained why Sesko is on Bayern Munich’s wish list. He wrote: “It is TRUE: There is an idea to give Harry Kane a deeper role as he gets older at Bayern Munich.”

“The striker knows he’s not getting faster as the years progress, but everyone can see that he already has an important role at FC Bayern with his passing and playmaking ability. So, he already has in his mind that he could play deeper and leave room for a pure striker ahead of him.”

The Bundesliga insider went on to suggest that the Bavarians have had their eyes on Sesko for a while, adding: “This idea was already developing at the club when Vincent Kompany first joined in 2024, which was why Bayern had the idea to bring Benjamin Šeško to Munich.”

“He was too expensive at the time, which is why Manchester United ended up pulling off the deal a year later. However, the idea is still there to bring such a striker into the team.”

Bayern unlikely to move for Sesko this summer

However, Falk suggested that the Bundesliga champions may not immediately move for Sesko, adding: “Now, Bayern have Ismael Saibari who can cover this role as well. So Bayern will perhaps see if they can make it work already this coming season.”

“So they have to see if they’ll still need a player like Šeško down the line. The Slovenian is still on the list and he’s a player who’s very interesting for FC Bayern.”

“Perhaps, if he’s struggling to make his mark in the Premier League, they could return to this idea. The plan for the future, nonetheless, is to sign another striker who can be a Harry Kane successor but also play in a two-striker system. This is one of Vincent Kompany’s key ideas.”

Final Thoughts

Sesko is yet to show his best form at Old Trafford, although there have been signs that he could become the No. 9 that fans have craved for in the past half-decade. However, United will also be wary of the rising interest in their star and must target silverware this season to ensure he stays settled at the Theatre of Dreams.
