Legendary England striker duo Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker delivered matching assessments of Benjamin Sesko’s performance after Manchester United were beaten 3-0 by Manchester City.
Sesko endures tough game against City
Sesko was finally handed his first Premier League start on Sunday at the Etihad, but it’s one he’ll be hoping to forget as fast as possible.
United barely threatened as City dominated en route to a comfortable three points.
A Phil Foden first-half header and Erling Haaland’s second-half brace were all Pep Guardiola’s men needed to condemn United to their second Premier League loss of the season.
Sesko appeared to be having a bright start, testing Gianluigi Donnarumma early on with a shot, but that was just about it from the Slovenian, who had very little to pounce on all game.
After the final whistle, Ruben Amorim insisted that Sesko needs more time to adapt to the high intensity and fast pace of the Premier League.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer and Lineker were in agreement that the United squad need to create more opportunities for Sesko.
Shearer and Lineker see eye-to-eye on Sesko
Shearer remarked, “I look at Sesko, because I’ve obviously been in that position… and he had that one shot very early on in the game. Other than that, he must be thinking, ‘Any danger? Any chance of giving me something here’? Something to go after, some crosses.”
Lineker added, “He was absolutely starved of any real service. He went through once where he broke the offside trap and the keeper blocked his shot.”
“But he does also look quick for a big guy, and I watched him specifically for a lot of the game – as much as you can when you’re watching TV rather than being at the game – and his movement, he’s making darting runs, but I felt for him a little bit.”
“It’s tough when you’re not getting any service.”
Shearer further stated, “I saw him last year a couple of times, Champions League, it’s a lot of money for him and it’s a massive ask for him to go in at a club and be in a team that’s under huge pressure – from where they are to where they’re trying to get to.”
“I think it’s a huge ask for him to go in and be successful this season.”
United are back in action on Saturday when they take on Chelsea at Old Trafford.
