Aston Villa prepare shock swoop for £55m United playmaker Emery believes he can transform – report

Aston Villa are considering a move for Manchester United’s Mason Mount, with Unai Emery keen to revive the midfielder’s stalled career.

The 26 year old has struggled at Old Trafford following a high-profile move from Chelsea, but could now be on the move again as Villa prepare to strengthen their squad.

Former United scout Mick Brown, who remains well-connected in the game, told Football Insider that Villa could act if Mount becomes available, and suggested Emery is a long-time admirer.

He has endured two difficult seasons in Manchester, marred by injuries and inconsistency and has now said to be fallen down the pecking order.

United are now understood to be open to offers for Mount, less than two years after signing him from in a deal worth around £55 million.

Villa, who lost Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio after their loan spells ended, are in the market for attacking reinforcements as they prepare for a European campaign.

Brown suggested that Mount, now back to full fitness, could rediscover his best form in a new environment, and believes Villa would be an “excellent” destination.

“United have tried to establish whether there is a market for Mason Mount,” he said. “Aston Villa have been spoken about and I think they could make a move.”

Emery’s interest in Mount is seen as part of a broader strategy to add technical quality and experience ahead of a demanding season.

Mount, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, is still regarded as a player of significant potential despite recent setbacks.

A move to Villa Park could offer the midfielder a chance to reset his trajectory, with European football on offer.

With United now seemingly ready to part ways, the decision may come down to Mount’s willingness to embrace a new challenge under Emery.
