Former Manchester United player Michael Appleton has been denied a dream return to Old Trafford as loans manager as a domino effect of Dan Ashworth’s sacking as sporting director.
New owners Ineos have been very proactive in reshaping the footballing structure at the club in the year they have been in charge.
Omar Berrada has come in as CEO and Jason Wilcox has been given the role of technical director.
Dan Ashworth was shockingly removed from his role as sporting director last December after only a matter of months in the job and this has led to Wilcox’s remit being expanded.
In addition, it has meant that Christopher Vivell is in talks with the club to make his recruitment director role permanent, as it is currently due to expire next month.
Another ramification of Ashworth’s sacking is that there will no longer be a role for former academy player Appleton.
The 49 year old had been seen attending youth games with Ashworth before his sacking and it had been slated that he was in line to take the position of loans manager at the club.
The Daily Mail report that this won’t be the case however as “Dan Ashworth’s shock sacking at Manchester United has had a knock-on effect with Michael Appleton no longer rejoining his old club as loans manager.”
“Ashworth had lined up Appleton to succeed Les Parry in the loans department, and possibly take on a coaching role.”
But the axing of the former Newcastle United employee has put paid to any chances of Appleton getting a reunion with the club where it all started.
The former Charlton Athletic manager will now continue his search for a role as a manager.
The 49 year old has a wealth of experience in the lower divisions as he has had previous jobs at Portsmouth, Blackpool, Blackburn and Lincoln.
