Amorim’s treatment of Casemiro stuns Ratcliffe, a complete shift in policy is on the cards – report

Manchester United’s board have been reportedly left impressed with how Ruben Amorim has managed Casemiro.

There are very few players at United who can be relied on to deliver in the side’s biggest game of the season against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is an obvious pick, and fans are also expecting five-time Champions League-winning midfielder, Casemiro, to show his class in Bilbao on Wednesday.

However, not many would’ve even considered including Casemiro in their starting lineup earlier this campaign. In the first half of the season, the 33-year-old midfielder was viewed as a burden in midfield and on the club’s wage bill.

The ex-Real Madrid man showed little mobility in the middle of the park, and his mis-timed tackles often left the side open in transition.

Such was his form that Ruben Amorim left the veteran midfielder on the bench for four consecutive games in December ahead of the winter transfer window. The Portuguese tactician even preferred to hand minutes to Toby Collyer ahead of Casemiro.

However, Casemiro continued to work hard and his now one of the first names on Amorim’s teamsheet. The United head coach also did well to change his pressing structure to ensure the ageing star wasn’t asked to press high all the time, allowing him to sit back and cover less ground.

According to GIVEMESPORT, the club’s hierarchy, including Sir Jim Ratcliffe, admire the United head coach’s work with Casemiro.

The report states: “They see how the Portuguese tactician has worked hard on the training ground to make the most of the club’s highest earner.”

His promising man-management could go a long way in helping United get the best out of their signings and save money on new additions.

The Brazil international has also earned plaudits for his contribution in the final third. He was involved in United’s three goals in their comeback win over Olympique Lyonnais.

His character, attacking intent, and experience could have a big say in the final against Spurs, who have always looked mentally fragile in big games.

Having said that, Casemiro’s long-term future at Old Trafford remains uncertain as his £350,000 per week wages remain a “significant sticking point.” His contract expires in June 2026 and includes the option of a further year.
