Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim believes Antony is adapting to a new wing-back position.
The Brazilian came off the bench in the second half at the weekend, to help spark a comeback victory for the second successive game.
After performing well in the 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on Thursday, he played his part in helping the Reds to overturn the Blues’ lead in the derby at the Etihad Stadium.
When asked whether the 24-year-old has a clean slate and a chance to stake his claim in a different role, Amorim stressed that the message to Antony is the same as for all of his players: that hard work is essential to success.
“I think, when we started, everybody is from scratch,” Ruben told talkSPORT. “We took like one month to explain that everything has a new beginning because every person deserves a new beginning and the power is in their hands because, if they show it, I will put them in to play.
“I just want to win. They are responsible to play, not me.
“He did a great job improving in that position. He has to defend more but he has the ability to do it and has to do it himself.”
Showing versatility is a useful trait for Antony, who has a reputation for maximum effort and diligence in his output. The South American has linked well with in-form Amad on the right and will hope for more opportunities to impress in the coming games.
Next on the schedule is Thursday night’s Carabao Cup quarter-final at Tottenham, with Bournemouth to follow at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Time is running out to shop the United Store before Christmas!
