Manchester United finally severed ties with Ruben Amorim after an underwhelming 14 months in charge. The Portuguese recorded the worst win-rate and points per game of any permanent United manager in the Premier League era. And his comments post the Leeds game on Sunday finally sealed his fate with INEOS deciding to sack him after a review meeting on Monday. The former head coach suggested that not only was the INEOS hierarchy instructing him on how to play, but they were also denying him control over transfer activity. Ruben Amorim demanded more control “I just want to say that I’m going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. I was really clear on that. “That is going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone is going to move on. That was the deal. That is my job, not to be a coach.” The club missed out on signing Antoine Semenyo, while none of the top midfield targets are likely to be available in January. And as per Sky Sports, Ruben Amorim wanted to add an experienced striker to his squad amid the struggles of Benjamin Sesko. His final transfer request However, the co-owners turned down that request, and as a result, the friction between the ex-Sporting CP boss and director of football, Jason Wilcox, erupted. “Amorim is likely to head back to Portugal in the coming days, Sky Sports News understands. “Amorim is understood to feel he was not getting the backing of the club hierarchy and is frustrated by what has happened. “Amorim is understood to have wanted to sign an experienced Premier League striker in this window.” INEOS refused to back Ruben Amorim any longer Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta was an option, while Brighton’s Danny Welbeck and ex-Brentford ace Ivan Toney were all linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams. Given Joshua Zirkzee‘s uncertain future, bringing in another striker to shoulder the load would not have been a bad call, but clearly, INEOS has other priorities. After spending big money in the summer and getting minimal results, backing someone with such a poor track record finally proved too much for the club.
