Amorim’s biggest wish could remain unfulfilled, fans will be furious with INEOS – report

Manchester United’s search for a ruthless striker has not gone according to plan so far, and further disappointment could be in store if the latest reports are to be believed.

With Rasmus Hojlund scoring only four times in the Premier League last season, it seemed inevitable that Ruben Amorim would ask for backup before the start of the new season.

Initially, Liam Delap was earmarked as the top priority but the former Ipswich Town striker chose Chelsea over the Red Devils despite Jason Wilcox’s push.

The focus shifted to Viktor Gyokeres with the head coach insisting on a reunion. But Arsenal pipped United in the race. And now, not too many top names remain on the market.

United’s failed striker hunt so far

Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins is a name on the club’s radar, but Villa’s asking price is currently beyond United’s reach with Unai Emery keen not to lose his No.9.

Benjamin Sesko will also likely cost a bomb despite Christopher Vivell’s green light while there are a few free agents that the 20-time English league champions are monitoring as well.

Given the names up for grabs and their asking prices, no wonder ESPN have claimed the Old Trafford side could begin the new season without signing a replacement for Hojlund.

“Manchester United could go into the season without a new striker following a frustrating search for a recognised No. 9, sources have told ESPN.

“Amorim has also been keen to add a new striker in the window after his team scored just 44 league goals last term.

No strikers this window?

“But after interest in Liam Delap, Viktor Gyökeres and Hugo Ekitike came to nothing, sources have told ESPN that there’s no guarantee a new striker will arrive before the transfer deadline.

“There is also an acceptance that if the club were to sign a new centre forward, room would have to be made in the squad.”

Amorim could be forced to tweak the positions of certain players, with both new signings, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo capable of playing up top on their own.

Fans will be hoping this update does not come to pass, and INEOS can secure a ruthless finisher before the window slams shut. As things stand, player sales could hold the key.
