Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has finally addressed speculation that he could potentially take over at Benfica in future.
Amorim on Benfica’s radar
Amorim has endured a difficult start to the 2025/26 season, although he received some reprieve last weekend as his players beat Chelsea 2-1 to register their second Premier League victory.
First-half goals from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro were all United needed to secure a victory against the Blues, who were previously unbeaten.
But questions over Amorim’s future persist, and only a consistent run of strong performances and results will truly silence them.
In the few days before and after the defeat to Manchester City in the derby, speculation was rife that Benfica were keen on offering Amorim a way out of Old Trafford. The rumours gathered pace after the leading Benfica presidential candidate was spotted at the Etihad for the clash.
He later clarified that their visit was not to scout Amorim, just before the Portuguese giants appointed Jose Mourinho as Bruno Lage’s successor.
Now, Amorim himself has put the rumours to bed, insisting that the Red Devils are the only club he wants to manage.
Amorim remarks on Benfica role
Amorim spoke to A Bola [via SportWitness] and paid tribute to Mourinho, while also confirming he currently has no desire to move to Benfica.
The 40-year-old remarked, “He’s the best Portuguese manager, and that won’t change. He’s always been a very special person in our football, but also in the world, and he opened all the doors for us.”
“I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Jose Mourinho.”
“I think it’s going to be a lot of fun for you in Portugal, and we’re going to enjoy it.”
Amorim added, “But that’s the way it is, and we’ll be here, watching to see what happens, but focused only on Manchester, and that will be my only club.”
United are back in action on Saturday when they go away to Brentford.
