Ruben Amorim says he wants to see Amad play closer to the opponent’s goal, after his decisive second-half performance in Plzen.
Having largely been deployed as a right wing-back under the Portuguese so far, our no.16 was fielded as one of the two attacking midfielders for the 17:45 GMT kick-off in the Czech Republic.
After a quiet first half, and the Matej Vydra goal that surprisingly put the hosts ahead, Amad was one of the more impressive players on a difficult pitch at the Doosan Arena.
The Ivorian created chances for Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount, and played an eye-catching role in Rasmus Hojlund’s equaliser, nutmegging Plzen captain Lukas Kalvach in the build-up to the goal.
Amorim feels Amad will be an important option in that role going forward, due to the possibilities opened up as he comes inside on his left foot.
But he did point out that he would like to see the former Atalanta winger try to stretch the play more in future, rather than always dropping deep and asking for the ball.
“I think he can be a very good player in that position,” said our head coach, in his interview with TNT Sports.
“He’s a left footer, we need in this team left-footed [players] to play in that role.
“I think in the first half he was coming for the ball too much, he needs to play near the goal, near the backline.
“Not there, but near, so it’s the first time and he will improve in the future.”
Amad, who joined United in January 2021, is enjoying a fine individual season, doubling his Reds appearance tally and contributing three goals and six assists in all competitions.
