Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has struggled big time this season, managing only seven goals in all competitions with only two of them coming in the Premier League.
The Dane has not scored in the last 11 games and has looked lost up front on his own as seen from his disastrous display against Fulham last Sunday.
The 21-year-old hardly managed to hold on to the ball under pressure, losing virtually every duel and managing only six successful passes in 58 minutes before Ruben Amorim was forced to take him off.
After emerging as the club’s top-scorer in his debut campaign, many had predicted an even brighter sophomore season for the former Atalanta starlet but on current evidence, he seems to have regressed.
Rasmus has struggled this season
So much so that from being considered untouchable last summer, INEOS are reportedly open to moving him on next summer should the right offer come their way.
Now Talksport have added that the new head coach is far from convinced with the Denmark international and that United No 9 is effectively on trial from now until the end of the season.
If he cannot win over the Portuguese tactician, he will be sold once the season concludes with several Serie A teams in the race including Napoli and Juventus.
“Rasmus Hojlund was previously viewed as one of the few players Manchester United would not entertain bids for. But that stance looks to have changed and Hojlund will effectively find himself on trial between now and the end of the season.
“The Dane is enduring a miserable season having scored only two league goals and gone 11 Premier League matches without hitting the back of the net.
“talkSPORT has been told hard-line United boss Ruben Amorim has been far from convinced by the £72m man. That news has filtered to Italy with Napoli and Juventus among the clubs keeping a keen eye on the situation.”
Amorim not convinced
As previously explained on The Peoples Person, should the Red Devils decide to move him on, they risk the prospect of incurring a huge loss on their initial investment.
The 20-time English league champions had paid an astonishing £64 million initially to land Hojlund on former boss Erik ten Hag’s orders but will likely recoup less than that given the striker’s current woes.
Amorim wants to reunite with former Sporting Lisbon protege Viktor Gyokeres next summer with United desperately in need of a ruthless finisher, something Hojlund is not currently.
He has potential to be a great striker but given the club’s current predicament, they need more than potential to reclaim former glories.
