Amad up for Premier League Goal of the Month
Thursday 02 January 2025 13:00
Amad’s last-gasp winner in December’s Manchester derby has been nominated for the Premier League’s Goal of the Month award.
Manchester City had taken the lead at the Etihad Stadium in the first half when Josko Gvardiol nodded in a deflected Kevin De Bruyne cross just past the half-hour mark.
Approaching the 88th minute, it looked like the Croatian’s goal was to be the decider — but Amad had other ideas.
First, the Ivorian seized on a loose backpass from Matheus Nunes, tempting the Portugal international to clumsily bring him down in the home side’s box, which provided Bruno Fernandes the chance to convert from the spot.
Next, two minutes later — and the passage of play that has seen Amad nominated for this award — it was time for him to have his own moment in the spotlight.
Receiving the ball courtesy of a rangy Lisandro Martinez pass, under less pressure this time, the 22-year-old instinctively lifted the ball away from the onrushing Ederson with his first touch, before calmly sidefooting it on the volley from a tight angle with his second.
The travelling Reds, who had made the short hop to the other side of town, erupted with joy inside the Etihad Stadium, as Amad was swarmed by his team-mates on the pitch in recognition of his effort to decide the game.
