Alarm bells at Old Trafford as “powerful midfielder” Amorim desperately wants eyes January loan – report

Manchester United will be looking to bolster their midfield in the winter. They have to.

Failing to reinforce their engine room in the summer has come back to haunt them.

Ruben Amorim’s midfield has looked shaky at times, lacking the athleticism and, on occasion, the technical brilliance needed to lay the foundations for United’s dominance.

INEOS, keen to back Amorim’s project, must show intent with a decisive January move for a quality midfielder.

Persistent links remain to Premier League proven midfielders like Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson.

But prising any of them away mid-season would require eye-watering figures. It is unlikely United will pull off a marquee signing in January.

INEOS may need to pivot towards realistic, attainable options.

Jobe Bellingham is emerging as one.

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder is a frustrated figure. Things have not gone to plan for him at Signal Iduna Park.

Touted as the Bundesliga giants’ marquee summer signing, he was expected to play a key role under Niko Kovac. But that has not been the case.

Instead, Bellingham has been treated as a squad player, a status that has not sat well with him or his camp.

Now, he is being linked with a January exit.

United have positioned themselves strategically to land him, having missed out twice before.

In 2023, they considered signing him from Birmingham but passed on it. He went on to shine with the Black Cats. Last summer, United pushed again, but Dortmund won the race.

Now, amid the player’s growing restlessness in Germany, a January departure is being mooted.

There is talk that Dortmund may resist approaches.

Bellingham’s World Cup wish

But the midfielder is angling for a move, one Dortmund may see wisdom in agreeing to.

“Now, with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon and his development stalling, a loan return to the Premier League is being contemplated,” reveals Teamtalk.

“Sources indicate United could capitalise on his unsettled situation, offering regular playtime to nurture his potential as a versatile box-to-box operator,” the UK publication adds.

Given that Bellingham is not yet ready to play a key role for Kovac, Dortmund chiefs should surely recognise the value in letting him leave to continue his development elsewhere.

The 20-year-old would not just continue developing; he would likely see his market value soar. That will not happen if he remains wasted at Dortmund.

United interest

Amorim is a big admirer. The “powerful midfielder”, as Sunderland coach Regis Le Bris once described him, could inject the athleticism, tackling and ball-carrying drive that United’s midfield is crying out for.

While United could move for him permanently in January, a loan makes perfect sense.

If he impresses, they may be convinced to make the deal permanent. If not, they can pivot back to their top midfield targets in the summer.

Premier League opposition

Crystal Palace are also circling. But United’s long-standing interest, Amorim’s endorsement and the sheer need for such a signing should see INEOS trump them to the deal.
