Ajax “seriously” trying to sign United star who was brutally criticised by Amorim in team meeting – report

Ruben Amorim failed to get the best out of a number of Manchester United players during his underwhelming 14-month spell.  Much has been made about his treatment of Kobbie Mainoo, who didn’t start any Premier League game under him this season. However, Manuel Ugarte was perhaps the most disappointing performer during his reign, given their history.  Manuel Ugarte facing uncertain future at Manchester United Manuel Ugarte emerged as one of Europe’s most promising defensive midfielders at Sporting CP under Amorim’s tutelage. As such, many expected the Uruguayan to show his best form after a tough start in England following his big-money arrival from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024.  Ugarte remained a liability with and without the ball under Amorim as well. During the end-of-season meeting at Carrington, Amorim underlined that the midfielder had “gotten comfortable and said he did not recognise him as the same player from their first stint together.” It has been widely reported that Galatasaray are willing to end his nightmare stint at United. The Turkish giants are hoping to sign the Uruguay international on an initial loan deal in January.  However, Gala now face strong competition from Ajax for Ugarte’s services.  Ajax enter race to sign Ugarte According to Voetbal International, Ajax are seriously interested in Ugarte. It is understood the 24-year-old is not opposed to joining the Dutch outfit. However, they are not in a position to afford his current salary. Negotiations with United are also expected to be tricky, as they might wait for their caretaker manager to carefully assess his options before giving the green light to Ugarte’s mid-season departure.  As such, Ajax are also exploring other targets. Former United midfielder Daley Blind is thought to be on their shortlist.  Featured image Carl Recine via Getty Images The Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade.
