Marc Skinner acknowledged that Manchester United Women are fatigued after a three-game week, following our narrow victory in a potential banana-skin fixture against bottom-of-the-league Crystal Palace.

A tightly fought 1-0 win over the Eagles, thanks to a Grace Clinton goal right before half-time, gave the Reds a deserved three points which takes them level on points with third-placed Arsenal, and one behind Man City in second.

The WSL is about to have just over a month off following a congested recent schedule that has included Women’s League Cup games and United go into the break full of confidence after three wins from three in the past week, including a big 4-0 win over Liverpool.

The boss spoke about how big the win against Palace was, and the impact of playing so much in such a short period of time. “In terms of the win itself, it is huge,” he began.

“What people don’t realise is that at the end of a three-game week you have that fatigue. Both teams had that a bit, and you could see it around the league.”

Skinner’s side must now wait a while for their next fixture, the results before the time off gives them the kind of confidence needed for such a lengthy time away, plus maintaining the motivation that being in such a tight battle for table positions brings.

“We’ve had three wins this week, which is fantastic and exactly what we asked for going into this break,” he added.

“[It is] a great way to leave ourselves poised to go and attack the start of the new year.”

A Manchester derby now awaits, with United heading across town to face City on January 19th in our return to league action.

With just under half of the season having now been played, it is all to play for in the race for European football, with only three spots available for WSL clubs.
