Who was Man of the Match v Bodo/Glimt?

Ruben Amorim recorded the first win of his Manchester United career, on his first night at Old Trafford, with a 3-2 victory over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League.

Naturally, much of the focus was on the new man in the dugout, but he’s not the one charged with getting the ball in the back of the net but, thankfully, the Reds had a couple on the pitch that know a thing or two about scoring.

Alejandro Garnacho’s rapid opener, profiting off some early Rasmus Hojlund graft, suggested the Reds could be in for an easy ride; it proved nothing of the sort. By the 23rd minute, the Norwegians had scored twice and were threatening a third. It took a Hojlund brace either side of half-time to quell fears of anything other than a United win.

There was never any doubt, was there? Creating the opener and collecting two goals of his own later in the game, you selected Hojlund as your Man of the Match, with the Dane taking 63 per cent of the vote.

He was crucial in the opener, charging down Nikita Haikin between the Glimt sticks, forcing an error, and doing enough to present Garnacho with a simple finish to kick proceedings off.

The Dane’s second was undoubtedly the pick of the bunch, stopping a pacy Noussair Mazraoui cross in its tracks with his left foot and then burying the effort with his right before it had time to drop to the floor.

But the third was perhaps the most crucial — heading into the break level, the next team to score would undoubtedly take a lot of the momentum with them, and the 21-year-old ensured it was the Reds, as he poked home an excellent team move in the 50th minute.

The Denmark international is clearly enjoying his early experience of life under Amorim. It’s showing on the pitch, and he reaffirmed that notion after the game.

“Obviously it’s going to take time, but I think we can already now, today, see some patterns and it’s getting better,” the striker told TNT Sports after the final whistle. “But, obviously, the manager needs time. He’s getting into the season after a difficult start so, yeah, now he’s just forced to build on it.”

The Portuguese coach’s setup may also be playing to Hojlund’s strengths, as it’s one he feels comfortable in.

He continued: “For me, the system reminds me a little bit about how we played in Atalanta, with 3-4-3, and it suits me very well.”

In truth, Hojlund’s incredible work leading the line left little opportuntity for anyone else to steal the spotlight for themselves, but an honourable mention goes to Noussair Mazraoui, who earned 21 per cent of your vote.

The Morocco international is becoming renowned for his all-action displays for the Reds, and he was up to his old tricks again today.

He provided the assist for Hojlund’s first, and it was his through ball that kicked off the team move that the Dane finished, all from his new role as one of the wide centre-backs in the backline.

There’s no suggestion that he was vacating his defensive responsibilities, however, because he also won the most duels (six) of any player on the pitch. Impact in every phase.

But there was a slim chance any player could have surpassed the impact of Hojlund on the night, creating or finishing all three goals that were crucial in handing Amorim his first win at United.
