Bruno Fernandes is about to hit 250 appearances for Manchester United, when he leads the team out against Leicester City.

The Portugal international scored twice against the Foxes, in our recent 5-2 Carabao Cup win, and will be looking to end Ruud van Nistelrooy’s temporary stewardship on a high note.

In his pre-match interview with club media, our interim head coach was effusive in his praise for the midfielder’s professionalism and leadership qualities, on and off the pitch.

“If you think about it, January 2020, coming in, to November 2024 and there’s no need to explain how fit you have to be, to play all these games,” said Ruud.

“But also how professional you are. He is an example, how he lives the game, as a professional, and, of course, as a captain leading the team.

“Within that, as being a role model in how to be the best professional you can be and also helping others in many situations – on and off the pitch.

“He’s a great example and a great captain.”

The skipper could have some additional support in the midfield for the 14:00 GMT kick-off, as there are fresh options in that area for van Nistelrooy to consider.

Mason Mount and Christian Eriksen are both in contention to play, after coming off the bench against PAOK.

“The players who came back from injury had some good minutes,” added the Dutchman. “Christian got 30+ minutes and Mason got 10 minutes. It’s very necessary for the squad that they can help out and bring their quality to the team, which they did, so I’m delighted they’re back and available for Sunday.”
