Manchester United’s pursuit of a new left-back has seen them linked with several candidates from across the continent. The Red Devils are short of options in the position at the moment, with Luke Shaw’s contract due to expire in 2027.
Meanwhile, Patrick Dorgu, who has covered for the Englishman in a couple of games, has looked out of place in the left-back role. The Dane previously operated as a left-sided wing-back in former head coach Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.
He was also used in the left-forward position by Michael Carrick last season and has looked better suited to an attacking role. United’s only other options at left-back are Noussair Mazraoui and the unproven Harry Amass, who is still finding his feet with the senior side.
United failed in their pursuit of Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde and Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall this summer, and could return for one or the other in 2027. However, they have also been linked with a cost-effective option in David Raum, whose contract expires in less than 12 months.
Raum’s contract situation will entice United
United invested heavily in midfield this summer and then ran out of funds for other positions. With a new striker fast emerging as a priority in 2027, Raum’s availability on a Bosman move will certainly entice the Red Devils.
Hall remains INEOS’ preferred option for the left-back role, given his age and experience of playing in the Premier League. However, having already signed a new deal, the Englishman is expected to cost a fortune.
Meanwhile, Balde could be another option, but he is unlikely to be cheap either. Raum, meanwhile, has been one of the best in his position in the Bundesliga in the last couple of seasons.
The 28-year-old has made six appearances for the Bundesliga giants this campaign, all of which were starts.

A previous reported relayed by The Peoples Person suggests that Raum is open to a move to Old Trafford. Acclaimed journalist Fabrizio Romano has now provided an update on the player’s future.
Raum’s future one to watch
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano insisted that Raum’s situation is one to watch in 2027. When asked to name a player whose future is flying under the radar, he said: “Look, one to watch I think in summer 2027 and with this contract situation expiring and so interesting is David Raum, the German left-back.”
“Because there are several top clubs around Europe looking at left-backs. David Raum has international experience doing very well for Red Bull Leipzig. He’s a solid left back and so a player to watch for sure.”
“There were some links with Man United, let’s see because Man United are still looking at that position. But for sure there could be movement around David Raum and that could be one to watch.”
Final Thoughts
Raum could hit the ground running and enable United to direct funds to other areas of the pitch. As such, one can expect the Red Devils to monitor his situation closely in the coming months.
