Mainoo in line for sensational first World Cup start after big development in England camp – report

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly in line to start for England in their next game against Panama. However, the three struggled in the meeting with Ghana as England were held to a frustrating goalless stalemate. Chance creation from the middle of the park was at a premium as England struggled to break down the African nation’s stubborn defensive unit. England struggled significantly with their passing between the lines and composure in tight areas, precisely the qualities Mainoo brings to the table. Even the introductions of Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze could not inspire the Three Lions. But there may be good news on the horizon for Mainoo, with the Daily Mail reporting that he may start against Panama. Mainoo boost According to the newspaper, Mainoo is on standby for his first start at the World Cup amid doubts over Rice’s fitness. Mike Keegan reveals, “Tuchel used Mainoo in midfield in training games ahead of the draw in Boston and it is thought the head coach was taking a look at the 21-year-old alongside Elliot Anderson in the likelihood of Rice needing to be rested at some stage during the tournament.” It’s understood that Rice has been dealing with a hamstring issue since Christmas. When he left the Boston Stadium on Tuesday evening, the Arsenal star’s left calf was heavily strapped. The injury is not thought to be serious even though he was limping. Rice will be assessed by England staff ahead of a selection decision. Anderson will also be checked after he sustained a blow to his back. Adding to the concerns is the fitness of Chelsea defender Reece James, whose availability remains very much up in the air.
