Video: “He’s earned the right”: United CEO on what makes Carrick stand out compared to previous managers

Manchester United started the season in inconsistent fashion under Ruben Amorim. Due to results, disagreements over tactics and transfer decisions, United and Amorim parted ways in January. The Red Devils appointed Michael Carrick as interim manager, and he adapted to the job immediately, winning his first four matches in a row, including victories against Manchester City and Arsenal. Carrick guided United to a third-place finish and secured Champions League football for the next season. During this time, the club managed to beat most of the top teams in the league and won six of their final seven matches, ending the season very strongly indeed. As a result, Carrick was offered the job on a permanent basis in May, which he accepted. Omar Berrada In a wide-ranging interview with the club’s media, CEO Omar Berrada explained why Carrick was given the job ahead of potential rivals. Berrada claimed that Carrick and he have a “very good” relationship. He also explained, “I obviously didn’t know him prior to him taking over the role, so when we went through the interview process, I met him for the first time. I had heard many good things about him, and everything has turned out to be true. He’s somebody who loves the club, understands the values of the club, is a great man-manager, and we’ve seen that with the players and how they’ve reacted to him taking over.” Giving an insight into why Carrick was chosen to lead the club forward, Berrada suggested, “I think he’s earned the right to continue leading the team over the next two years or more.” When pushed to describe the Englishman’s managerial style, he said, “I would describe him as somebody who is very calm but also very driven and I’m sure he’ll do everything he can, him and his staff, to make sure that we have a successful team this season, next season and the year after that.” Berrada hinted that perhaps United have got it wrong in recent years by choosing managers with very different styles. He explained, “the way we look at it is you need the right coach for the squad that you have and what you’re trying to achieve over the next years. I think Michael, over the last months, has demonstrated that he can do that.
