BACK David Tully May 22nd 2026 Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes remains committed to the club, despite the existence of a release clause in his contract, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. Foreign clubs can pay a €65m (£56m) buyout fee to secure the services of the Portuguese international, with a transfer to the Middle East having been on the cards in previous summers. However, speaking on the Here We Go podcast, Romano said that Fernandes is currently aiming to stay at Old Trafford: “Bruno has a release clause in his current contract, and also, especially from Saudi one year ago, two years ago, three years ago, they always try to sign Bruno Fernandes, and he’s always been a big target.” “If you want my feelings speaking to sources nowadays after the Champions League qualification, after the Michael Carrick success at Man United, my understanding is that Man United fans can be quite relaxed and happy with the Bruno Fernandes situation because the feeling I have speaking to my sources is that Bruno is very, very excited about the possibility to play again Champions League football with Manchester United.” “So at the moment, there is no concrete movement about Bruno Fernandes leaving the club. So it’s likely for him to stay and continue. Then we have to wait a little bit. We have to understand what’s going to happen later on this summer. But as of today, the feeling is positive.” What has Fernandes said about his future? Speaking to the BBC back in October, the 31-year-old made it clear that he would not make any firm commitments about his future before returning from international duty with Portugal this summer: “My agent also knows how I work. If he wants to talk to me, it will be after the World Cup. Until then, I won’t speak to anyone.” Could Man Utd offer the midfielder a new contract? The Red Devils could propose a new deal that eliminates the release clause, but that would also require negotiations on a pay rise. It is believed that Fernandes would want in excess of £400,000 a week to agree to fresh terms, and United are unlikely to match those wage demands. It should be pointed out that, while his current contract expires at the end of next season, the club do have an option to automatically trigger a twelve-month extension. Want more news on Man Utd?
