United star set for dramatic last-minute international call-up as World Cup beckons – report

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has been handed a timely England national team football boost amidst his impressive club performances. Superb Shaw Shaw has been an ever-present figure for United this season, playing a big role in the team securing Champions League football after a two-year absence. He featured prominently under Ruben Amorim, and this trend has carried forward since Michael Carrick was named the Portuguese coach’s temporary replacement at the start of the year. Shaw’s appearance in the weekend’s goalless draw with Sunderland was his 36th start of the campaign. He has started every game this season and is on track to feature from the outset in all 38 matches for the first time in his career. Injuries have plagued his United career, but he has managed to stay fit this season. In a recent interview, he opened up about how injuries have affected him, insisting that he often felt he was letting his teammates and the fans down. Shaw missed out on England selection during the March international break, with Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire the two United players to be called up. Thomas Tuchel named an enlarged 35-man squad, effectively picking two groups to give playing time to fringe players while resting more established stars at this stage of the season. Even so, Shaw was still overlooked. Tuchel told reporters that it was a “tough decision” to leave Shaw out. Now, it has emerged that Shaw is in line for a sensational return to the national team ahead of this summer’s World Cup. Shaw’s England boost According to Mike McGrath of The Telegraph, Shaw is set to be included in England’s provisional World Cup pool of players. McGrath wrote on X, “Thomas Tuchel to submit up to 55 to Fifa by today’s deadline.” “He picks his final 26 on May 22.” Danny Welbeck, Luke Shaw and Jarrad Branthwaite set to be included in England’s provisional World Cup pool of players.
