Championship side plots ambitious raid on United for one of their exciting young defenders – report

This summer could have huge repercussions for Harry Amass’s future at Manchester United. After earning his chances with the United senior team and making five appearances last season, the youngster was allowed to leave on loan last summer. Brilliant loan stay at Sheffield Wednesday The plan was for him to hone his craft out on loan and return this summer to stake a claim for United’s left-back spot. At Sheffield Wednesday in the first half of the season, Amass was brilliant. The Championship side was really struggling, yet Amass still stood out for his quality. He became the player the Owls turned to for moments of magic when things were not going their way. They hoped the teen sensation would stick with them until the end of the campaign, but unfortunately, Ineos exercised the mid-season break clause in Amass’s loan deal. The left-back subsequently returned to United after 21 appearances for Wednesday. Tribulations at Norwich Norwich then signed him for the second half of the season, and while there were high hopes he would continue his development at Carrow Road, things quickly unravelled. Just days after his Norwich debut, Amass suffered a serious hamstring injury at the end of January and had to return to United for rehabilitation. It was only recently that he hinted at his return to the grass, but it remains to be seen whether Amass manages to return to Norwich and see out the rest of the season. QPR to rival Norwich for Harry Amass’s signature But even as we wait, conversations have already begun about where Amass will play his football next season. Queens Park Rangers want to sign him, with West London Sport reporting that the Championship club are planning for life without loanee Rhys Norrington-Davies: “Other left-backs have therefore been identified as potential signings, and Londoner Amass, who turned 19 last month, is currently QPR’s top target.” Norwich, who also hope to keep him, now face competition from QPR for his signature. Ineos have a tough decision to make The big question, however, is what INEOS plan to do with Amass. Clearly, his development did not go as planned due to the serious injury setback. Offers, as already hinted, may now come in for his services; that, plus talk of  United looking to sign a left-back this summer, does little to inspire confidence about his long-term future at the club.
