But he hasn’t actually played as a wing-back,” added Scholes. “He actually did alright in the last… but I’d probably sell.”“Yeah, sell,” agreed ButtWhy Dorgu can play an important role for Man Utd at present & in the futureFollowing his appointment in mid-January, Carrick decided to entrust Dorgu in a more advanced playing role in his 4-2-3-1 formation, fielding him as a left winger. The Dane repaid the manager’s faith by scoring in the back-to-back wins over Manchester City and Arsenal. Patrice Evra was left in awe by Dorgu’s ‘unbelievable’ goal against the Gunners.Sadly for the young man, he suffered a hamstring injury that has kept him out of action ever since. After months of rehabilitation, Dorgu’s return to the pitch is edging ever closer, and he has already rejoined his teammates in training, travelling with the squad to the midweek training camp in Dublin.Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if and where Carrick will deploy the former Lecce star in his lineup.Scholes and Butt have raised a valid point, as the young man appears tailor-made for the wing-back role, while he doesn’t seem to have a natural position in the current formation. However, his early exploits under Carrick counter this claim.Man United are reportedly searching the market for a right-footed left winger, and rightly so. Nevertheless, Dorgu can be a backup option in this role, while he continues to improve his defensive game in order to replace Luke Shaw at some point in the future. After all, the Denmark international began his career as a left-back, and we still expect his development to come full circle.
