Nearly official: Harry Maguire signs new one-year contract at United – Andy Mitten

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has put pen to paper on a new contract to remain at the club, it has now been confirmed. Maguire was set to leave United at the end of this season upon the expiry of his terms. He was on the verge of free agency as negotiations continued between United and his representatives. Last month, David Ornstein of The Athletic revealed that an agreement between United and the camps of Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo was close to being found. United wanted to keep Maguire on reduced terms amidst his impressive performances under caretaker boss Michael Carrick, which also earned him a recall to the England squad. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that United would announce Maguire and Mainoo’s new deals before the end of the campaign and now, Andy Mitten has revealed that the former has put pen to paper on his contract. According to Mitten, Maguire has signed a one-year extension, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2027. United have the option to retain him for an additional 12 months. Mitten explains that there was plenty of strong interest in Maguire, who could have earned more money elsewhere. It’s understood that four Serie A clubs, three Premier League clubs and one Turkish side were prepared to snap him up as a free agent. Maguire is said to be settled in Manchester with his wife and children. He is also happy with how things are going at United. The report further states, “United waited before negotiating a new deal. Maguire wasn’t playing until January and the club’s status for next season was unsure. Now, it’s looking increasingly likely that United will return to playing European football and will need a larger squad.” United have also teased the announcement of Maguire’s contract extension. The club posted a video showing a contract and a pen at the training ground, suggesting an announcement is imminent. 🔖 Contract news is heading your way 🔜 pic.twitter.com/qg5lXGWhoo — Manchester United (@ManUtd) April 7, 2026 Maguire has made 20 appearances for United across all competitions this term, contributing two goals and one assist in that period.
