Man Utd are seriously weighing up a move for Bournemouth star Marcus Tavernier at the end of the season, according to reports. Newcastle are also interested in the attacking midfielder but TEAMtalk claim the Red Devils will “threaten” to hijack the Magpies’ move for the 26-year-old. Tavernier is believed to have caught the eye of United scouts, who have also been watching his teammates, Alex Scott and Tyler Adams, this season. His ability to line up in several different positions is seen as a key factor in the Manchester club’s pursuit. As well as playing as a no.10, Tavernier has been deployed as a no.8, a no.6 and on both wings this campaign. The constant changes in role have not really affected his goal output – he has scored 6 goals and provided 4 assists in all competitions. Iraola is a big fan of Tavernier Speaking after the midfielder scored a brace during a 3-1 win over Sheffield United a couple of seasons ago, Cherries boss Andoni Iraola was full of praise for Tavernier’s ability: “He had some chances he didn’t finish, against Burnley and Newcastle, but it was a matter of time because he has the quality. It’s good he gets the reward because he is contributing in such different ways to the team. I’m really happy for him.” Man Utd could have plenty of competition Newcastle are not the only team keeping tabs on Tavernier, with TEAMtalk reporting that Tottenham, Aston Villa and West Ham also have a longstanding interest. A fee of around £40m may be needed to secure the player’s services, and that would take a sizeable chunk out of Man Utd’s transfer budget. Buy Man Utd Classic Football Shirts here. While recruiting two midfielders is believed to be on the agenda, shelling out that much on Tavernier could have a knock-on effect with United likely to need another £100m to snap up one of their top targets such as Elliot Anderson or Sandro Tonali.
