Legendary Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has delivered his clear verdict on Michael Carrick potentially being handed the job on a permanent basis. Superb start Carrick has enjoyed a brilliant start to life since he was named Ruben Amorim’s temporary replacement in December last year. United are unbeaten in seven of their last eight Premier League games (W6, D1, L1), signalling a dramatic upturn in form. This uptick in performances has been accompanied by a vibrant mood in the dressing room, which is a stark contrast to the turbulent spell under Amorim. Carrick is believed to be under consideration to be the permanent boss, although no final decision has been made. United insist the process will be thorough and more candidates will be assessed. Some managers who have been linked to the Old Trafford hot seat include Oliver Glasner, Roberto De Zerbi, Carlo Ancelotti and Luis Enrique. Some former United players, most notably Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, and Roy Keane, have voiced their opposition to Carrick being appointed to the role. Scholes recently went as far as aiming a public dig at Carrick. Most other ex-players, including Rio Ferdinand, Owen Hargreaves and Patrice Evra, have thrown their weight behind Carrick and now, Vidic has joined their ranks. Vidic takes Carrick stance The Serbian told The Athletic, “Michael [Carrick] and the players have my support, and I hope they provide us with the Champions League football that United must have.” “That’s the aim for now. Let Michael and his players try and reach it. Don’t put pressure him as to what comes after. Let’s enjoy it for now. Under Michael, I saw a reaction from the players, especially in the first few games.” “I was at the Manchester derby (United’s 2-0 home win in Carrick’s debut after replacing Amorim), with my friend Vladimir.” Vidic added, “I sat next to Sir Alex (Ferguson, the club’s legendary long-time manager) and it was wonderful to see him. Vladimir said it was the best day of his life, after the birth of his child!” “I’d not felt Old Trafford with that energy and passion for a long time.” United return to action on Sunday when they host Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.
