Manchester United Women scored a late winner to overcome a resilient London City Lionesses on Sunday. First half After an impressive 3-0 away victory over Atletico Madrid midweek, Marc Skinner spoke about the importance of staying focused for this game. United did not heed the message, as they found themselves behind after just five minutes. Former player Nikita Parris headed in Freya Godfrey’s cross to give the away side the lead. The Red Devils failed to respond, and the London City Lionesses controlled most of the first half. A rare lapse in concentration from Phallon Tullis-Joyce led to the ball arriving at Parris on the edge of the box, but she could not convert. Skinner’s side are made of sturdy stuff, however, and despite not playing well, they found their way back into the game. Just before half-time, Jess Park beat a couple of defenders, cut in, and unleashed an unstoppable effort into the net. Maya Le Tissier and Parris clashed in the box, but the referee waved away the visitors’ appeal for a penalty. United received some bad news when Jayde Riviere had to be substituted off with an injury. The Red Devils will be hoping it was just a precautionary change, as they can ill afford to lose another full-back. Both sides struggled to create anything of note, but this team that Skinner has built has a never-say-die attitude to be admired. Despite playing poorly, Millie Turner, returning to the starting line-up today, headed in a Le Tissier free-kick to power her team into the lead. United saw out the win, and it was their seventh in a row as their excellent start to 2026 continues. They remain second in the table and will face Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their last-16 tie on Thursday evening at the Progress with Unity Stadium.
