Manchester United’s hunt for a new head coach has taken a dramatic turn after the latest decision by INEOS’s prime target for the Old Trafford hot seat, Thomas Tuchel. Premier League Proven Michael Carrick is currently in charge of the Red Devils for the remainder of the campaign, having been appointed caretaker in the wake of Ruben Amorim’s departure. United’s hierarchy are prepared to wait until the summer to settle on a long-term successor for the Portuguese coach, as the pool of candidates will grow. Premier League experience is understood to be a vital attribute dictating the search, which may hinder Carrick‘s chances of getting the job full-time. A number of managers on INEOS’s shortlist will be out of contract at the end of the season, such as Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola, or potentially available after the World Cup in North America finishes in July, including Tuchel. Carlo Ancelotti (Brazil) and Mauricio Pochettino (USMNT) are both under consideration, but it is believed that the England boss is the club’s first-choice target. United interviewed Tuchel in the summer of 2024 as the club contemplated dismissing Erik ten Hag, despite the FA Cup triumph over Manchester City in May. However, an agreement could not be reached with the 52-year-old coach, though Sir Jim Ratcliffe was thoroughly impressed during these talks. But in a major blow to INEOS’s plans, the German has put pen to paper on an extension with the Three Lions, ending any prospect of him taking the reins at Old Trafford. Out of the race Tuchel’s contract had been set to expire after the World Cup, with reports suggesting he was interested in a return to club football. However, The Times reveals he has instead “signed a new deal” until 2028, meaning he will lead England at the European Championship finals, hosted by England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The English FA stated they are “delighted” with Tuchel’s decision, while the former Chelsea manager revealed his excitement at continuing in the role.” “I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England. It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup. It is an incredible opportunity and we are going to do our very best to make the country proud,” he stated. Tuchel has previously enjoyed spells at some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. His profile and pedigree fit perfectly with what INEOS are looking for to lead the next stage of their revolution at Old Trafford. Nonetheless, United’s rulers have missed out on appointing the German tactician for the second time – which may accelerate a pursuit of Roberto De Zerbi. The 46-year-old Italian was interviewed alongside Tuchel in 2024, and is available after leaving Olympique Marseille this week. He continues to have a number of admirers at Old Trafford, though Tottenham Hotspur are also pushing following the dismissal of Thomas Frank.
