Sunderland sign Manchester United midfielder Griffiths on loan

Sunderland have completed the signing of Manchester United midfielder Mared Griffiths on a loan deal until the end of the season. The Lady Black Cats announced the news via a post on their official club website this morning. The 18-year-old Welsh international joined Manchester United in 2024 and linked-up with the club’s Professional Game Academy League squad. Griffiths made her senior debut for The Red Devils in an Adobe Women’s FA Cup tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers last season, coming off the bench to score twice in a 6-0 win. Griffiths signed professional terms with Manchester United last summer and she now needs regular football to develop at senior level. She will hope to get regular game-time in the coming weeks with loan club Sunderland. After adding Griffiths to her squad, Sunderland boss Melanie Reay said “Were delighted to add Mared to our squad for the rest of the season. Shes an exciting, attacking young player whos ready to take the next step into senior football and we hope we can help her to do that while allowing her to contribute effectively to our team.” Griffiths could go straight into the Sunderland squad for their Barclays WSl2 fixture against Sheffield United at The Stadium of Light on Friday night.
