Manchester United’s summer transfer plans are beginning to take shape, with the “left winger market” being one to pay close attention to, according to a new report. Back Three to a Back Four The departure of Ruben Amorim – along with his 3-4-2-1 system – has ushered in a return to traditional wingers under caretaker coach Michael Carrick. The results from this transition have spoken for themselves, with back-to-back victories over Manchester City and Arsenal in Carrick’s first two games at the helm, employing a 4-2-3-1 formation with Patrick Dorgu and Amad on either flank. The 44-year-old Englishman’s contract lasts until the end of the season, after being handed a brief of securing Champions League football next season. Over the summer, INEOS will then decide upon Amorim’s long-term successor, with a more experienced candidate than Carrick likely to be the outcome, though nothing can be ruled out at this early stage of the process. However, the Daily Mail reveals United will “stick to a back-four system regardless of whether Carrick remains in charge or not” – which has reinforced the need for a new option on the left, given the lack of natural options in the squad at present. A Range of Targets United made an attempt to sign their first-choice target for the left wing this month after entering talks with AFC Bournemouth’s talismanic attacker, Antoine Semenyo However, the Ghana international rejected Old Trafford in favour of a switch to the blue half of Manchester, agreeing to join Pep Guardiola’s side in a £62.5 million deal. INEOS have identified RB Leipzig winger starlet Yan Diomande as an alternative, with the 19-year-old winger establishing himself as one of the most exciting talents in Europe this season. But competition is expected to be fierce for the Ivorian, with Leipzig likely to demand up to €100m for their prized asset. As such, the Red Devils must line up alternatives who may be more readily available – such as AC Milan forward, Rafael Leão. The Daily Mail reveals the Portugal international is one name in the mix, with sources in Italy indicating I Rossoneri would “consider a sale” this summer. He has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford, with the 26-year-old possessing a potent cocktail of speed, strength, size and skill – an ideal profile for the Premier League. However, there are concerns over Leão’s attitude, with a sense that he is yet to apply his prodigious talents correctly. When combined with a costly transfer fee and big wages, INEOS would be forgiven for their reticence over a forward who possesses many of the same flaws as a certain Englishman currently in Catalonia. Chelsea starlet Tyrique George is another name on United’s list, according to the Daily Mail, with United increasingly preferring players with Premier League pedigree, though the 19-year-old winger is relatively unproven. Everton trickster Iliman Ndiaye, fresh from success at the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, is also under “consideration”, though the 25-year-old’s contract with Everton runs until 2029, giving the Toffees a strong bargaining position this summer. Final Thoughts Diomande is the standout prospect on the left wing throughout Europe, with devastating dribbling and outstanding athleticism. He is also ambipedal, capable of playing on either wing with equal effectiveness – as Semenyo is. However, this unique profile has put him on the radar of Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, to name but a few of his suitors. It makes sense, therefore, for United to consider alternatives, with Ndiaye’s skillset offering INEOS the exact complement to the existing attackers at Old Trafford.
