REPORT: Tottenham Try To ‘Deter’ Man Utd And Liverpool As They Slap £100M Price Tag on Transfer Target

BACK David Tully Jan 25th 2026 Tottenham are demanding £100m for Man Utd target Micky van de Ven, according to reports. The Dutchman is attracting the attention of the Red Devils and Liverpool and TEAMtalk claim that Spurs have placed a high asking price on the player to “deter” bids. Van de Ven would become the most expensive defender in football history if either club matched the valuation, but there is an expectation that the figure won’t be met. Discussions over a new contract are said to have stalled, and that has prompted the links with other teams, including United. Van de Ven is unwilling to commit to Tottenham It has been a difficult season for Spurs. Things started brightly under new head coach Thomas Frank, but it has quickly turned sour for the Dane. Although they are in line to make the knockout stages of the Champions League, they have been knocked out of both domestic cups, and they currently sit in the bottom half of the Premier League table. They are unlikely to finish in the top 5. For that reason, van de Ven is not interested in extending his current deal, which is set to expire in the summer of 2029. Why are Man Utd interested? Although the switch to a back four means the requirement for centre-backs is lower, the Red Devils could well lose Harry Maguire this summer. The 32-year-old is out of contract at the end of June, and there is a growing possibility that he could follow Casemiro out of Old Trafford. That would leave United with two experienced options – Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez, with Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven also in the first-team squad. Van de Ven may well be under consideration to replace Maguire. Want more news on Man Utd?
