Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick and five of his players have been honoured following the side’s outstanding victory over Manchester City last weekend. United outclass City United were brilliant from start to finish as they beat Pep Guardiola’s City 2-0 at Old Trafford, courtesy of second-half strikes from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu. In what was Carrick’s first game in charge as caretaker boss, United created a host of scoring opportunities and defended astutely to secure a vital three points. Guardiola admitted that United were by far the better side. The final score flattered City, as United saw three goals disallowed and struck the woodwork twice. Carrick and the team have been lauded repeatedly since the game and now, they’ve earned further recognition with inclusions in Alan Shearer’s Premier League Team of the Week. Honours continue to roll in Shearer names Carrick the head coach of the best XI, which includes five United stars: Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Dorgu, Bruno Fernandes and Mbeumo. On selecting Maguire, Shearer wrote, “After being out for so long, he was immense.” The former Newcastle man said about Martinez, “He won the battle against Erling Haaland.” He noted about Fernandes and Dorgu respectively, “Fernandes drove Man Utd forward in everything he did.” and “He scored an important goal to seal the win and was so much better on the ball.” Shearer hailed Mbeumo’s “brilliant” counter-attacking goal and his energetic performance, which City simply didn’t have an answer for. The 55-year-old added that Carrick could scarcely have asked for a better start to life in the United dugout. United return to action on Sunday when they face league leaders Arsenal at the Emirates.
