Manchester United recall Birmingham City loanee Newell

Manchester United have recalled youngster Lucy Newell from her loan spell at Barclays WSL2 club Birmingham City ahead of schedule. The Red Devils announced the news via a post on their official club website this morning. The 19-year-old was set to spend the entire season with Birmingham City but her parent club have opted to terminate the arrangement midway through the campaign. Newell made four appearances for Blues in all competitions. She was largely used as a squad player and was often named amongst the Birmingham City substitutes. Manchester United initially signed Newell on a dual-registration basis from FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division club West Bromwich Albion. She impressed within The Red Devils’ academy system and joined the club on a permanent basis in summer 2024. The player signed professional terms with Manchester United just months’ later. In her time as a senior player at Manchester United, Newell has furthered her development with the Professional Game Academy League squad while she has also been on the fringes of the first team. The player also spent time out on loan at Blackburn Rovers last season. Newell could be handed a fresh loan move later this month with the player being in need of more regular football.
