Andre Onana may have already played his last game for Manchester United. The Cameroonian arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2023 in a reported £47.2 million deal, but endured a nightmare spell with the Red Devils. Onana featured heavily under former manager Erik ten Hag, but failed to live up to expectations. He initially retained his position under the Dutchman’s successor, Ruben Amorim, but lost his place in the team at the start of this season. Meanwhile, United signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp last summer, and the Cameroonian was subsequently shipped off on loan to Trabzonspor. The 29 year old has endured a mixed time with the Turkish giants so far. Onana’s dismal record at Old Trafford Onana has registered 102 appearances for United to date, conceding 150 goals and managing 24 clean sheets. For the record, he let in 36 goals in 41 games for Inter Milan, keeping 19 clean sheets. Since his move to Turkey, the Cameroonian has recorded three clean sheets in 14 appearances, conceding 23 goals. Lammens, on the other hand, already looks like an upgrade on Onana, and has impressed with his shot-stopping abilities so far. He is largely considered the best signing under INEOS so far. However, according to a report relayed by The Peoples Person, Onana is hopeful of salvaging his United career following the departure of Amorim this month. With Michael Carrick taking over as interim manager and a permanent appointment expected this summer, the Cameroonian believes he can earn a second chance at Old Trafford. A contrasting update on the situation has now emerged. Onana no longer in United’s plans According to TEAMtalk correspondent Dean Jones, United are keen to offload Onana permanently this summer. He said: “Andre Onana is finished at Man Utd. We should have no doubts that he has played his last game for the club, and there is real hope that his loan move genuinely does turn into a permanent one.” “There is a sense of relief that he has started positively and that there is a sense of optimism that they can completely move on from him now.” The report adds that the club’s decision is final and it will not change regardless of who takes charge at Old Trafford this summer. Final Thoughts Onana committed several high-profile blunders during his two-season stay with United. His dual slip-ups against Galatasaray in the Champions League group stage and his mistakes against Lyon in the Europa League are among the many painful memories that remain vivid in fans’ memories. Lammens, meanwhile, has already added a degree of calmness to the backline, although he has managed just two clean sheets this season. However, all signs indicate that the Belgian is the right man for the No. 1 position at the Theatre of Dreams, so it is in the best interests of all parties that Onana moves on permanently this year.
