Manchester United have announced that Michael Carrick has been appointed as interim head coach. Carrick unveiled United have released a statement, officially unveiling Carrick, who will see out the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign. Reacting to the appointment, Carrick said, “Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour.” “I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club, which we know that this group is more than capable of producing.” “I have worked with a number of the players already and have obviously continued to watch the team closely in recent years, I have total belief in their talents, dedication and ability to be successful here.” “There is still a lot to fight for this season, we are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances that their loyal support deserves.” United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, remarked, “Michael is an excellent coach and knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United.” “He is ready to lead our talented and determined group of players for the remainder of the season as we continue to build the club towards regular and sustained success.” United have also confirmed that Carrick’s coaching staff will consist of Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion, Jonny Evans and Craig Mawson. Darren Fletcher will return to his role as lead coach of the Under-18s. Carrick facing big job Carrick temporarily takes over from Ruben Amorim, who was sacked last week after 14 months in charge of the team. Amorim endured a tough time at United, which saw him struggle to attain consistent results and performances. He often came under pressure for his perceived tactical inflexibility, which saw him rarely diverge from his controversial 3-4-3 formation. Amorim’s final straw came when he launched a scathing attack on his bosses, after which reports surfaced that his relationship with Wilcox was strained. With United eliminated from the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, and with no European football this season, their entire campaign now hinges on the Premier League. Carrick’s primary task is to motivate a squad facing a significantly reduced schedule of just one match per week. The Red Devils currently lie in seventh place in the table, three points adrift of Liverpool in fourth. Carrick’s first assignment is a Saturday meeting with cross-town rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.
